A Singaporean's guide to living in Thailand

aha you just touched on a raw nerve about two tier pricing I really cannot take it. Went to parks got to pay differently. Its not about the money but the double standards. Sickening knn.

Sometimes, showing a valid Thai drivers license or work visa will get you the Thai price. When I had a work visa in the past, I was able to get in into the Grand Palace free. On the other hand, I've had Burmese friends (who don't have bat prachachon) pay the foreigner price at hospitals etc. YMMV.

Thailand is not the only place to have 2-tier pricing. For example. when you go to Hawaii, you will find the same - they call it the Kamaaina (native peoples) "discount". Singapore has 3-tier pricing at polyclinics and now, admittance into Primary 1 schools etc. The logic, at the end of the day, is tax money or votes subsidizes those facilities. Foreigner's (not working) don't pay income tax so they shouldn't get a discount.

cannot sleep la bro, you understand.

Next time, see your doctor for a prescription for Ambien or generic name: Zolpidem Tartarate. It's a sleeping pill that has a relatively short half-life meaning that it's out of your system quick in 3-4 hours. Next morning, no "hang".
I use it all the time when flying, doesn't leave me with a drugged-out feeling. Of course, best way for knockout is still booze and a joint.

Airport tax is paid by everybody who uses the airport - Thais included - and is what - 700 baht?. Not the same as income tax. "Over here" means where? Singapore? Japan?
Singapore also has multiple tier pricing for tax-supported entities - healthcare, schools etc
Japan also has different pricing for foreigners for say healthcare - no national insurance card - pay more.

So same same with Thailand tio bo except for tourist attractions? If you buy things, you pay the same for food, items in Thailand etc when it is fixed price. For example, I pay the same in BigC the same as Sombat, the Khon Jon (poor) from Isaan. When it is variable price, they will chop you anywhere in the world depending on perceived ability to pay. Rich Thais driving up in a Merc get chopped the same. This is simply free market economics. In Thailand, some price discrimination say national parks make sense, some others that are pure private enterprises like the Aquarium at Paragon is just discriminatory profiteering.

Japan is interesting place - I lived there for sometime. When you think of it, some of the discrimination in Thailand pales to that in Japan. All of Asia is like that.

Mai pen rai - we disagree a little. I think small shops don't cheat me that bad in Thailand - maybe because I know the price or maybe because I just don't know

Actually, I prefer to buy from small shops. Most time, slightly more expensive than the supermarkets. Have been doing this for a long time. If you buy 10 times from BigC or Tesco, they still not your friends, only have points nia. But if you buy from small shops 10 times, you got yourself a friend. This is how my network started many many years ago. Sometimes, I still buy from the big stores if the small shops do not have the item I needed.

2 tier pricing is very normal in Sin City but most long term residents including farangs are exempted. Those foreigners that stay here long enough will get the local price. To be fair, 2 tier pricing also applies to Thai people if they are from other provinces. One example is motorcycle taxis, if BKK residents take, it will cost THB 80 but locals (foreigners or Thais) will get THB 40. And how these people know if the customers are foreigners (outside Sin City)? From experience.

Wet morning, you got intel from sinkie FB arh?
prefer to buy from small shops
Actually I like to get my beer fix from small mom/pop shops in LOS -no bother with afternoon "ban" in 7-11 and major outlets. No real price differential, and service with a toothy smile from aunty (get away with a smattering of teochew if sino thai) and ... on occassion, with pretty daughter +555
