An 82 year-old woman has suffered multiple facial injuries after being flung out of her seat when a SMRT bus made a sharp turn.
The incident happened at around 4pm on 14 June at the bend near block 138 of Bukit Batok Ave 8. At that time, the woman known as Madam Chan Lan Ching was taking bus 178 from Boon Lay to Woodlands to visit her daughter.
According to her, she was thrown off her seat and landed on the deck of the bus when it made a sudden right turn.
In a report by the Straits Times, it was reported that just as she was recovering from the fall the bus driver jammed on the brakes causing Madam Chan to smash her face against a metal pole.
She was sent to the National University Hospital immediately for treatment for bruises around her eyes and mouth. She also required 17 stitches above her lips. Besides her facial injuries, she also has bruises on her limbs and body.
When interviewed, the old lady said she hopes SMRT will provide compensation. She is said to have high blood pressure and diabetes. It is unknown when she would be discharged from the hospital.
Despite her injuries, Madam Chan has kept her spirits high. She even joked that it was lucky she is 82 and not 28, as she might not be able to find any takers after being “disfigured” by the incident.
Her second daughter, a 56 year-old civil servant Christina Wu, said at the hospital that she barely recognises her mother due to the injuries.
The Singapore Civil Defence Force confirmed that they were notified about the accident and that they dispatched an ambulance at 4.12pm that day.
A spokesperson from SMRT has confirmed the incident and said that they are currently investigating the matter.
The spokesperson added that they have visited the old lady and contacted her family, and would provide the necessary assistance.
