t first glance, 81-year-old hawker Peng Ah Bah appears too frail for his laborious job. He’s completely hunched over as he potters around his neat, sparse stall in Taman Jurong, where he sells chwee kueh every day from 6am. The traditional Teochew snack consists of soft steamed rice cakes, topped with savoury chye poh (preserved turnips) and chilli.

A stall with no name

Ah Bah’s stall has no name. Its signboard is emblazoned with the generic Chinese words for chwee kueh (which is why his regulars simply call it “Taman Jurong chwee kueh”). When 8days.sg dropped by the stall, we were greeted by the surprisingly robust elderly man, who took our order by heartily booming in Hokkien: “How many you want?” We repeated ourselves a couple of times, ’cos uncle is a little hard of hearing.

But when we requested to take his photo, a pleased Ah Bah sprang up from his hunched posture, pulled down his mask and placed his hands assertively on his counter. “Come, come take my photo,” beamed our twinkly-eyed model. “Wah, he must be damn havoc last time,” our dining companion muttered.

Actually his chwee kuay doesn't need to abstain from pork lard cos the Muslims won't eat it anyway unless there's a halal logo..

At 82 he should be enjoying his retirement gracefully.

Later got one idiot who will say working in your golden years is exercising!

leetirement in sg is both subjective and unproductive. all ah pek can do and will do are shaking legs at kopitiam and oggling at beer aunties. they are better off doing something with their creative and productive energies, such as making kueh with their hands than groping the beer lady and fighting another ah pek.

i have seen many people who retire early end up in depression after the " no need to work honeymoon period".
the loss of "power", talking from a position of strength, lack of a passionate hobby or sport, too much time and start thinking nonsense gets into them and they become depressed...
retirement is not an option for those who needs to keep their active minds occupied.
early retirement for some can mean faster deterioration of the human brain...

i believe it depend which country we are in if in sg there nothing much those retire pioneers can do because there no help from the gahmen and many end up pushing trolley collecting boxes to karang guni just to buy food for the day.

if in other countries even in malaysia the pioneers there can retire gracefully. in Australia the retired people can do alot of things like gardening, meet up with friends drink coffee and eat cakes chatting at shopping centre of take cruise eery year :)

Tell me lah...which garment of the day wouldnt love such proud citizens? :roflmao: :roflmao:

Some Hindus like @syed putra, doesnt take pork. Not cos of religious but more on health/hygene reasons. But he will pretend hes a "Muslim".

By the way, putting a 'no pork' or 'no lard' sign doesn't work. Most Muslims look for the halal symbol/certification. The more anal ones want the business to be Muslim-owned.

Also, the standard price of chwee kway these days is one for $0.50. Three for $1 is quite impressive. Then again Taman Jurong isn't a CBD or touristy area, the rent must be lower.

In addition, many chwee kway stalls today sell chwee kway that were pre-made by machines, particularly this so-called 'Bedok' franchise, with outlets everywhere. So much for UNESCO 'hawker culture'.

LOL, Mediacock's 8days had quite the nerve.

His secret to staying youthful
Ah Bah proudly told us that at his age, his blood pressure, blood sugar and cholesterol levels are all within a healthy range. To keep fit, he avoids heavy meals during the day. “I only eat instant oatmeal,” he declared, hoisting a family-sized tub to show us. He has one big meal a day at dinnertime, where he eats “lots of duck and chicken”, and very little vegetables. “My father used to be a veggie farmer, so I got sick of eating veggies,” he said candidly.

Look at the Hunchback of Notre Dame Taman Jurong: very youthful indeed. :whistling:

retire pioneers will take concession bus/mrt to nearest air-con mall and spend their day sitting, walking, drinking bad-coffee/tea, buy a toto/4D....those not doing well, collect plates at food-court/hawker centre...
