JAKARTA – More than 500 demonstrators rallied outside the Malaysian Embassy here Thursday and burned the Jalur Gemilang to protest Malaysia's detention of three Indonesian maritime officers, who have since been freed.
The demonstrators are grouped under the Betawi Brotherhood Forum. A brief scuffle broke out when police moved to stop the protesters from breaking down down the front gate of the embassy. "This is the largest crowd that has rallied outside the embassy for this year," said a Malaysian embassy official, according to The Star.
A water cannon and several truck loads of police personnel were deployed to secure the embassy. The rally lasted for more than an hour before the protesters dispersed. In Kuala Lumpur, Social Care Foundation president Robert Phang has urged all Malaysians to unite in support of the government against the Indonesian demonstrators.
In a statement Thursday, Phang, who is also an MACC panel member, urged the Indonesian government to act swiftly against the demonstrators to show it does not condone such emotional and unacceptable behaviour against a friendly neighbour.
