SINGAPORE: Four out of 10 Gen Y employees, or those aged between 18 and 34, will start looking for another job if their request for a pay rise is turned down, a survey showed.

A survey of 500 Singapore employees, conducted by specialist recruitment firm Robert Half, showed how each generation will respond to this rejection.

Nearly four in 10 (37 per cent) respondents aged between 18 and 34 said they would walk away if they do not get the boost in pay they want. In contrast, the most common (32 per cent) response of Gen X, or those aged between 35 and 55, was to wait for the next performance review and to ask for a pay rise again.

Baby boomers – those aged over 55 years of age - also preferred to wait, with 42 per cent saying they will ask again at the time of their next performance review. Only six per cent of Gen Y employees said they would take no action, compared to eight per cent of Gen X employees and 10 per cent of baby boomers.

Only four per cent of the workers said they would respond by complaining about their boss’s decision to colleagues, friends or their spouse.

Ms Stella Tang, Managing Director of Robert Half Singapore, said the survey shows the different priorities of each generation.

“Generation Y is ambitious and wants to keep their careers moving forward. This means getting better remuneration as their responsibilities increase. Generation Y knows they have time on their side and can look for employment elsewhere if they feel their talents are not being recognised,” she said.

“Generation X has the most options available to them when a pay rise is refused. They are likely to be more senior and can command either additional perks or a transfer to another higher paying role within the company. They are also able to take their experience to another employer if they feel they are undervalued.”

Baby boomers are the least likely to jump ship because many will be thinking about retirement or moving onto a mentoring role within the company, Ms Tang said.

Not surprising. Many older workers are already over-paid. They must be thankful if they still can keep their jobs. How dare they expect pay rise.

This shows that the new generation is smarter.. you think their time is precious enough to make others rich???

with the internet, they are work by themselves in the comfort of their home.. they chose to work outside just to gain some society experience and not for a livelihood, unlike the senile older generation who take such a huge pay check and become a liability for the company.

This is what my thoughts are exactly. But PAP MPs and Ministers keep getting pay raise, and they are older and already over paid. What about Desmond Kuek who has so many fuck ups under his watch yet getting more and more bonus? Leeders Leed by example mah. If Gen Y can see their Leaders getting more and more pay for more and more fuck ups, why can't they ask the same?

If you are a newbie the pay is probably very little. If a company isn't willing to recognise your efforts with a pay increment. Then why stick around?

our economy is a joke,its based on exploitation of cheap labour as much as possible and super lax labour laws and immigration laws.it relies on most of the money generated by the workforce and economy going into the pockets of these foreign mncs and glcs and very little of it going into the worker's pockets or the citizens.

we achieved a super high gdp but it is meaningless and represents smoke and mirrors since the super high gdp benefits non of the citizens or workers.if we start asking for pay raises or demanding minimum wages for locals and foreigners alike in order to reflect our super high gdp,many of these foreign businesses and local glcs will either go out of business or pull out,since most of them cant make it anyway without the artificial environment created by our government,cheap labour,low wages,low taxes and high immigration to augment the workforce.as a result our super high gdp will fall or even collapse.

competing on the basis of being a low cost cheap competitor is a major mistake,we cannot rely on being a cheap workforce forever,standards and expectations have to go up,inflation forces everything to go up.

Bet the whole lot Gen Y will leave their job if no pay rise, tis survey is completely out of date to please the Pappies. Pappies still tink a bowl of kway teow soup cost 2 bucks, lets see how many more cheap labour they can import to keep wages low to fatten their own pockets.
