THREE Singaporeans detained under the Internal Security Act (ISA) have been released, said the Ministry of Home Affairs Wednesday. The trio were held for their involvement in the Jemaah Islamiah (JI) terrorist network and the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF), a Muslim rebel group in the Philippines. However, the ministry said: 'Since their detention, all three individuals had cooperated with investigations and shown significant progress in their rehabilitation.

'As such, they were assessed to no longer pose a security threat that required preventive detention.' The trio are: JI member Mohammad Sharif Rahmat, who was detained in August 2005; and JI member Simon Sabtu and MILF member Husin Abdul Aziz, both of whom were detained in August 2002. Mohammad Sharif was freed on Aug 5 this year on a Restriction Order, which requires him, among other things, to undergo counselling and seek government approval before changing jobs or address, or going abroad.

The others were released on Tuesday. Simon and Husin were freed on Suspension Directions, a term that refers to an early release before the expiry of a detention order. However, both must abide by similar conditions and restrictions as those placed on a person released on a Restriction Order. Should the trio defy the restrictions, they may be detained again. The ISA allows for detention without trial for up to two years each time, and it can be extended when detainees are assessed to remain a security threat.
