20,513 took up Singapore citizenship in 2008
Channel NewsAsia - 2 hours 27 minutes agoSINGAPORE : More immigrants became Singapore citizens and Permanent Residents (PRs) in 2008.

A total of 20,513 immigrants became new citizens last year, compared to 17,334 in 2007.

79,167 became PRs in 2008, an increase of 63,627 from the previous year.
The update was provided by the Minister—in—Charge of Population, Wong Kan Seng in Parliament on Thursday.

He said the increase could be due to the good economy and not because of a change in immigration policy.

Mr Wong was responding to a question by Member of Parliament for Bukit Panjang, Dr Teo Ho Pin.

Mr Wong also announced the formation of a new National Integration Council to look into coordinated efforts to assimilate new citizens into Singapore society.

It will be chaired by the Minister of Community Development, Youth and Sports (MCYS), Vivian Balakrishnan, and will have members from both the public and private sectors.

More details will be unveiled during MCYS’ Committee of Supply session in Parliament next week. — CNA /ls

i dun think they are so desperate.

what i afraid is that some people, use our passport and attack USA, then USA withdrew our visa waiver program, then shit, we have to apply visa again. like shit.

I am willing to have my asshole poked any number of times by anyone who can give me passport to the bestest country in the world.

It has since been corrected to show

Instead of "

Just doing my bit in self policing and highlighting that the article has been
corrected at Yahoo sg news website.

No,pl add 79,167x300=$23,750,100.00 per month as employers of PRs also get S$300 per month

So another S$23 million monthly of my reserve to the foreigners.

We shall be repaid in our next life which I do not mind.It is good to do charity, but if only PAP would look more into its own citizens.

There is a catch to this whole fucking thing. How many of these arseholes do you think will actually send their kids to NS? They may take up Sinkee PR or citizenship but can you be sure that they will not have another citizenship as a backup? My wife is from HK but she never gave up her HK passport for a Sinkee one. When the time comes for their kids to register for NS, the'd probably just send them overseas.:(

So many Foreigners become Sg PRs,no wonder the quality of life has dropped !!!!!

ONce again, the media never say they become citizen based on what reason. Is it for the love of singapore ,for a good life or a better future, or for a general stepping stone to a real first world country? Please state the reason for that.

Only stated the figure and let people guess what is the reason.

I have a PR friend from Ipoh, Malaysia.

She told me herself , coming out from her mouth, that she will leave Sg after her son has done his P6, she told me she will not want her son to do NS. Straight from her mouth...

what a sissy prickless gay.. chey..:oIo:

You do not need rocket science to deduce the reason as to why so many qualified and educated foreigners are "encouraged" to work and settle here as citizens and PRs.

The paramount reason is the extremely low birth rate and the increase in the number of aged Singaporeans coupled with the increase in the number of singles and divorcees here.

These younger foreigners will be replacement and will form a significant backbone to "support" and equalise the rapidly aging population here.

As it is, there are only 2.3 million citizens here and 750,000 of them are already senior citizens.:(

Let's put our hands together and welcome the 20,513 idiots into the neighborhood. :D
