A moment of history comes to a close

The closing of the queue to see the Queen lying in state brings to an end what has become a familiar sight over the last few days.

Images of thousands of people lining up in London at all hours of the day, often in chilly temperatures, are some of the most striking to come out of this historic period.

The wait time at one stage was estimated to be more than 24 hours; and the queue snaked from Westminster Hall, down along the River Thames and stretched south for almost 5 miles (8km).

The map below shows the queue at its peak.

It brought together people from all walks of life - young children, older people who remembered watching the Queen's coronation on television in 1953, and celebrities such as David Beckham who waited for 12 hours.

Some even travelled from outside of the UK to pay their respects.

"There’s a profound sense of shared grief and affection for Her Majesty in this huge, diverse gathering of people from around the world," Canadian politician Jason Kenney wrote on Twitter as he stood in line.

The queue closed to members of the public at around 22:30 BST on Sunday. The Queen will continue to lie in state until 06:30 on Monday ahead of her state funeral later in the day.

George and Charlotte to join Westminster Abbey mourners

By Sean Coughlan
Royal correspondent

Queen's coffin, lying in state
The Queen's coffin will be brought in procession from Westminster Hall to Westminster Abbey

Prince George and Princess Charlotte will join more than 2,000 guests at the Queen's funeral in Westminster Abbey.

Nine-year-old George and his sister, seven, will form part of a procession with the Royal Family, following the coffin as it enters the church.

Before the service a bell will toll every minute for 96 minutes, marking the length of the Queen's life.

Towards the end of the service, the Last Post will be played before the nation observes a two-minute silence.

With world leaders and dignitaries gathered in the 13th Century church for the service at 11:00 BST, the King and Queen Consort will lead the procession behind the Queen's coffin.

The Prince and Princess of Wales will walk ahead of George and seven-year-old Charlotte, who called the Queen "Gan Gan", followed by their uncle and aunt, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, and other members of the Royal Family.

George and Charlotte's younger brother Louis, 4, is not expected to attend.

The Order of Service shows a service filled with traditional church music and readings from the Bible, with a sermon from the Archbishop of Canterbury, Justin Welby.

"I am the resurrection and the life," will be the reading as the royal procession arrives in the Abbey, in a service which the Queen helped to plan.
The Prime Minister Liz Truss will read a lesson, with prayers from religious leaders including Cardinal Vincent Nichols, the Roman Catholic Archbishop of Westminster.

The funeral will hear praise for the Queen's long reign, with the Dean of Westminster, David Hoyle, commending her "long life of selfless service".

More than 2,000 guests will gather in Westminster Abbey

The Abbey says this will be the first funeral of a monarch held here since the 18th Century, although there have been more recent funerals for the spouses of monarchs.

The music at this historic service will be in keeping with the Queen's faith and tastes. There will be pieces by Ralph Vaughan Williams, JS Bach and Edward Elgar.

New pieces have been composed by Judith Weir and Sir James MacMillan, a leading Scottish composer, whose music featured prominently in the service of thanksgiving at St Giles' Cathedral in Edinburgh.

Baroness Scotland, secretary general of the Commonwealth, will deliver one of the readings, which are interspersed with hymns including The Day Thou Gavest Lord Is Ended and Love Divine, All Loves Excelling.

The Lord's My Shepherd will be sung, as it was when the Queen married Prince Philip at Westminster Abbey in 1947.

As the state funeral comes to an end, the Last Post will be played, followed by a two-minute silence and a lament from the Queen's piper.

After the funeral ends at noon in Westminster, a committal service will follow at 4pm at St George's Chapel in Windsor.

This more intimate setting will include personal touches and private connections. The service includes the "Russian Kontakion of the Departed", a hymn Prince Philip had chosen for his own funeral last year.

One of the Bible readings - "I saw a new heaven and a new earth" - was also read at the funeral of the Queen's father and grandparents.

There is music composed by Sir William Henry Harris, an organist who taught the Queen to play the piano.

Another poignant lament will be played by a piper and the committal service will end with the lowering of the Queen's coffin into the royal vault, accompanied by the words: "Go forth upon thy journey from this world, O Christian soul."

The bells of Westminster Abbey will later be rung - but muffled - as is tradition following the funeral of a sovereign.

You are the last in line': Moment of relief for one - and disappointment for other - as Queen's lying in state queue closes | UK News

By Bethany Minelle, news reporter
Monday 19 September 2022 02:04, UK

The queue to see the Queen lying in state has been officially closed, with those currently standing in line facing a wait of at least 10 hours.

The cut-off point for queuing was put in place by The Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS) around 10.30pm on Sunday, stopping new people from joining the line in a bid to ensure funeral plans run to schedule.

A statement from the department said: "The queue to attend Her Majesty The Queen's Lying-in-State is at final capacity and is now closed to new entrants.

"Please do not attempt to join the queue. Stewards will manage those already nearby.

"Thank you for your understanding."

A volunteer in a high-visibility jacket handed out the final wristband, saying to the lucky recipient: "You are the last person to join the queue."

"Oh bless you!" she exclaimed to groans and cries of "oh no," from people behind.

Lying-in-state ends ahead of funeral

The Queen’s lying-in-state in Westminster Hall has now ended.

Hundreds of thousands of people who have travelled to London from across the UK and the world have been able to pay their respects since Wednesday night and throughout the weekend.

The Queen’s four children mounted a vigil for her on Friday evening, and her grandchildren did the same on Saturday.

Guards have kept watch for six hours a shift, switching in and out of roles at 20-minute intervals. But now the doors to the hall are closed, as the final preparations for this morning’s state funeral take place.

At 08:00 the doors to the abbey opened, and people are starting to walk in.
As far as the eye can see here - down into Parliament Square and up Victoria Street - normal life has been suspended.

There's no Monday rush-hour traffic of course - just coaches moving people, trucks lifting crowd barriers and buses shifting police and security staff teams to different posts.

But also gone is some of the street furniture - London will put on its best face today - no traffic lights or wide street security barriers will bring this procession to a halt.

There's sand down in front of the abbey - the State Gun Carriage will grind to a halt here just before the service at 11:00 BST.

Sniffer dogs have been busy working the area around the west and north entrances - where some of the 2,000 guests have arrived.

Thousands of members of the armed forces will line the procession route and take part between here, Wellington Arch and on to Windsor. And some of their number are passing now

London Stock Exchange closed to mark Queen's funeral

Trading terminals in London are not operating today as several markets around the world close to mark the death of the Queen.

The London Stock Exchange will not trade at all, while markets in other Commonwealth countries also plan to mark the monarch's death by closing for public holidays in the coming days.

The London markets, including the FTSE 100 and associated trading indexes, have operated every day since the Queen's death was announced after closing on Thursday, 8 September including opening and closing at the usual times the following day.

The stock exchange normally closes for bank holidays and weekends.

It said: "On the day of the funeral of Her Majesty The Queen, the London Stock Exchange would be closed for trading.

"It is to remain open for trading as usual during the official period of mourning. More information on our business days is available via our website."

Many other businesses have decided to close for some or all of Monday, although they are not required to do so.

In Canada, where the Queen was head of state, the government has declared Monday a federal holiday to mark the funeral, but the Toronto Stock Exchange will continue to trade as normal, it announced.

In Australia, Monday will be a normal working day, but Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has announced that Australians will get a public holiday on Thursday, 22 September.

On that day Sydney's Australian Securities Exchange will be closed.

New Zealand's bank holiday is not until Monday, 26 September 26. The New Zealand exchange will close that day.

Dear Vladimir,

As the clueless leaders gather to shed crocodile tears for a dead and irrelevant aunty, please do not forget to send your warmest regards… the burn from the sarmat could possibly warm the entire Europe through the winter. It will be the most delicious dish to have grilled Macrons, Olafs, Bidens as core ingredients.

Yours sincerely,

Who wasn't invited to the Queen's funeral – and how did they respond?

There are a number of countries who weren't invited to send a representative to the Queen's funeral at Westminster Abbey – with Russia, Belarus and Afghanistan not making the list.

Invites were also not sent to Myanmar, Syria and Venezuela, while Iran, North Korea and Nicaragua will only be represented at an ambassadorial level, Whitehall sources say.

Vladimir Putin expressed his condolences to the King on the news of the Queen's death, but Russia's invasion of Ukraine was always going to make his attendance in London highly unlikely.

However, the Kremlin has responded furiously to the snub, saying it is "profoundly immoral" and "blasphemous".

"We view this British attempt to use a national tragedy that has touched the hearts of millions of people around the world for geopolitical purposes to settle scores with our country during the days of mourning as profoundly immoral," Russian foreign ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova said.

The Vatican has announced that Pope Francis will not attend the Queen's funeral.

More than 100 of Heathrow Airport's flights have been cancelled to avoid aircraft disturbing the funeral.

The airport said it wants to ensure the skies over London will be quiet during the two-minute national silence as the Queen's funeral at Westminster Abbey nears its end shortly before noon.

No flights will be allowed to take off or land from 15 minutes before the silence starts until 15 minutes after it ends.

Departures and arrivals will also be halted during the arrival of the funeral cortege and procession at Windsor Castle, and diverted around the castle during the private family service on Monday night.

British Airways - the most-affected airline - will cancel 100 short-haul flights due to the restrictions. Virgin Atlantic said it will cancel four flights
