I would kill myself over match-fixing, says Gattuso

18 December 2013

405924header.jpg

Former Italy international Gennaro Gattuso has claimed he would be prepared to take his own life if he was found guilty of match-fixing.

It was revealed on Tuesday that the ex-Milan midfielder, along with former Italy team-mate Cristian Brocchi, was connected to a case that saw four men arrested on Monday.

But 2006 FIFA World Cup winner Gattuso insists the prospect of pre-determining the outcome of a match has never crossed his mind.

"Never have I ever had the slightest thought about possibly fixing a game," he is quoted as telling Sky Sport Italia by La Repubblica Sport.

"If something was proven I would be willing to go out into the street and, I know this is a strong thing to say, I would kill myself.

"Anyone who knows me knows that I can't stand to lose even a practice game, not even a game of cards with my friends.

"I'm angry and offended. I want to clear everything up so I don't have a stain on my career."

Meanwhile, the player's agent, Andrea D'Amico, stressed there was not yet a cause for panic.

"We are remaining calm and we have to be patient and see how the investigation develops.

"However, just because he is under investigation does not mean anything, for all we know this could be just false allegations.

"Sometimes when you are a famous player, it is very easy for your name to appear and to be a target.

"We will wait and see how the situation develops."

Gattuso, who spent 13 years at Milan as a player, has been out of work since being sacked as coach of Serie B club Palermo in September.

Pogba, Pirlo will not sign before Christmas, says Marotta

18 December 2013

Juventus director general Beppe Marotta believes Paul Pogba and Andrea Pirlo will not sign new contracts until the new year.

Veteran Pirlo's current deal runs out in the summer, while the Serie A leaders are looking to tie down the 20-year-old Pogba on improved terms following a string of impressive performances.

But, while Marotta is not expecting the midfield duo to sign over the Christmas period, he is confident they will soon put pen to paper and extend their stays at the Juventus Stadium.

"There will be no announcements under the tree," he told Rai Sport. "I don’t think anything will be sorted out before Christmas, but we are calm as there is an idyllic relationship between us and the players.

"They consider Juventus to be their home, their natural habitat and it would be hard for them to find something better.

"I think we’ll resolve these situations in a small amount of time."

Champions Juventus are currently five points clear of Roma at the top of Serie A.

Serie A Preview: Atalanta v Juventus

21 December 2013

406608header.jpg

Juventus will look to further cement their place at the top of Serie A as they face an out of form Atalanta side on Sunday.

Antonio Conte's men travel to the Stadio Atleti Azzurri d'Italia in fine form having won their past eight league games.

The Turin club now sit five points clear of Roma at the summit of the division and will head into the mid-season break as leaders, regardless of the result in Bergamo.

Juventus have an outstanding record against Atalanta, and have not tasted defeat against the Lombardy club in Serie A since February 2001, when Atalanta earned a 2-1 win.

And Conte's side will be favourites to take all three points from this encounter with a team that has won just one of its past eight outings in the league.

That victory came against relegation-threatened Bologna but, although Stefano Colantuono's men are in the midst of a mediocre season, Atalanta can take some hope into the game having suffered only one loss in front of their home fans this term.

Inter, Napoli and Milan were among Atalanta’s biggest scalps last season, and Colantuono will be looking for his team to produce another strong showing against one of the division's best and end their 12-year wait for a league win over Juve.

Still Juventus present an imposing challenge, particularly with midfield stalwart Andrea Pirlo (knee) the only absentee in a near fully-fit squad.

Juve may hold a commanding lead over Roma as they seek their third consecutive Scudetto, but vice-captain Claudio Marchisio believes it is vital that Conte’s maintain their momentum heading into to the second half of the campaign

"This year will end in the best possible way, with us in first place," Marchisio told JTV.

"We've now got a different rival who will try to overtake us, but we want to keep winning."

Serie A Preview: Inter v Milan

21 December 2013

406586header.jpg

Fierce rivals Inter and Milan meet for the first time this season with both sides in need of a win.

Inter head into the game on the back of a poor run of form, which has seen them fall off the pace in the battle for UEFA Champions League qualification.

Indeed, Walter Mazzarri's men are winless in their last four league games, a run that dates back to November 9.

Inter will aim to arrest that slide against their greatest foes, who have tasted victory only four times in 16 league games this term.

Massimiliano Allegri's men sit 10th and can take little confidence from boasting an unbeaten run of five matches in Serie A given that four of those have ended in draws.

Defender Daniele Bonera remains hopeful that Milan can end 2013 on a high by winning their final game before the mid-season break.

"It could mean a Merry Christmas for us giving us a few more points on the table and helping (us) towards 2014 in a calmer frame of mind," Bonera said.

"It'll be a tough game on Sunday evening from a technical point of view as Inter remain a strong team even if they haven't had such great results in the past few matches.

"We're doing everything we can to prepare the match in the best manner possible."

Inter have a number of absentees for the game, with Cristian Chivu (toe), Diego Milito and Walter Samuel (both thigh) all unavailable and Ricardo Alvarez suspended.

Milan's injury problems are even worse, however, as an array of first-team players are set to miss out once again.

Striker Stephan El Shaarawy remains absent with a foot injury, and is joined on the sidelines by suspended captain Ricardo Montolivo.

Robinho (shoulder) and Ignazio Abate (ankle) are also unavailable, along with Valter Birsa (thigh) and Matias Silvestre (calf).

5 things to know about the Italian league

MILAN — Heading into the winter break, Inter Milan will host AC Milan in the Italian league.

Massimo Pinca | AP Photo Juventus forward Carlos Tevez, of Argentina, celebrates after scoring with teammates Mauricio Isla, of Chile, during a Serie A soccer match between Juventus and Sassuolo at the Juventus stadium, in Turin, Italy, Sunday, Dec.15, 2013.

Also, league leader Juventus will visit Atalanta, while second-place Roma — the only unbeaten side in Serie A — hosts Catania.

Here are five things to know ahead of this weekend's matches:

---

DERBY DELLA MADONNINA

The 222nd official Milan derby, or the Derby della Madonnina as it is known in Italy, is set for Sunday.

The matchup between Inter Milan and AC Milan is considered one of the major derbies in the world. But unlike in other major derby matches, it is rare to see trouble between the two sets of fans.

That was not always the case but a non-aggression pact made in 1983 — following the death of an Inter fan — still holds firm today.

The fans reserve their vitriol for the players on the field and Milan forward Mario Balotelli can expect some abuse after a troubled few seasons at Inter.

The derby derives its name from the statue of the Virgin Mary on top of Milan's Duomo, known as the Madonnina. Whichever team wins is said to have been favored by the Madonnina.

---

WITHOUT SUPPORT

Inter Milan faces the prospect of a derby match without the support of its staunchest fans.

Inter, which is deemed the home team for Sunday's match, has had its Curva Nord closed because of anti-territorial chants during its match against Napoli.

"A derby without the Curvas loses its appeal," Inter captain Javier Zanetti said.

Inter is appealing against the sanction, while AC Milan has given its backing to its rival.

"I talked to (Inter chief executive) Marco Fassone, we're going to see if we can get this ban postponed," Milan vice president Adriano Galliani said. "There's no sense to it. It's awful when you go into a stadium and you see a sector empty."

Inter is fifth, nine points above Milan, which hasn't won a derby match since 2011.

---

FANS BANNED

Roma will also have one of its main sectors closed for Sunday's match against Catania.

The club is appealing against the ban, which was imposed following racist chanting in Monday's 2-2 draw at AC Milan.

"We're against any form of racial discrimination and we have shown this by proposing several times to the federation and the league, various initiatives to fight racism," Roma general director Mauro Baldissoni said. "We're trying to understand what happened Monday night in Milan. We have video evidence which proves that there were no racist chants."

Roma is looking to end the year on a positive note after five draws and a win in its past six games saw it lose ground on Juventus. It remains the only unbeaten side in Serie A, however.

---

RIGHT TRACK

Roma striker Mattia Destro is targetting a place in Italy's World Cup squad after making a goal-scoring return from injury.

Destro was out for several months at the start of the year with a knee injury and, although he returned, he was forced to sit out the opening three months of the season with more problems.

The 22-year-old Destro scored on his comeback against Fiorentina and followed that up with another goal against AC Milan on Monday.

"I have to take things one step at a time," Destro said. "I'm really attached to the national side, but first I have to recover my best form."

Destro hopes first to win the Serie A title with Roma.

"We are strong, we play well and we're a great group," he said. "But Juve and Napoli are strong, and the bianconeri are more used to winning."

---

PEPE'S BACK

Juventus winger Simone Pepe is set for a long-awaited return to Serie A after making his first appearance in more than a year.

Pepe made his comeback from injury in Juventus' 3-0 win over Avellino in the last 16 of the Italian Cup on Wednesday.

"It's been a long way back but I feel I can say the nightmare is finally over," he said. "I need to work to regain full fitness and reach the same levels as my teammates.

"I'm not one who easily gets emotional, but I must admit I felt it when I heard the crowd's roar tonight. I need to thank the fans, as well as my family and teammates, for supporting me throughout."

Juventus visits Atalanta on Sunday looking for a ninth straight win and a ninth straight clean sheet.

Benitez blasts 'horrible' pitch after Cagliari draw

348376_heroa.jpg

The Spaniard felt that his players had actually done well on a dreadful playing surface in Sardinia but acknowledged that a point was not enough for the title-chasing Partenopei

Napoli boss Rafael Benitez lashed out at the state of the Sant'Elia pitch after his side's 1-1 draw at Cagliari on Saturday night.

The Partenopei fell behind to an early goal from Nene, after a slip from right-back Christian Maggio, but quickly drew level thanks to a Gonzalo Higuain penalty.

However, despite their best efforts, the visitors were unable to force the winner they needed to draw level on points with second-placed Roma - and Benitez felt there was no doubt as to where the blame lay.

“In all honesty, it was difficult to play and move the ball around quickly on a horrible pitch,” the Spaniard told Sky Sport Italia.

“We created more chances than Cagliari, but it was not sufficient, as we should’ve scored two or three goals.

“It was a very important match for Cagliari in front of their fans. In theory, a draw here is not a bad result, but it is for us because we’re chasing the top of the table, even though it was very difficult here.

“The ball did not roll evenly, so we had to go for long passes and this created a gap between attack and midfield."

Napoli now sit two points behind Roma, and a further five adrift of leaders and two-time defending champions Juventus.

Allegri: Milan have too many players

The coach has played down the prospect of the Rossoneri bolstering their ranks in January and admitted that M'Baye Niang could move to Montpellier

Massimiliano Allegri has expressed his discontent at the size of his AC Milan squad as he prepares to face city rivals Inter on Sunday.

The Rossoneri have signed Adil Rami on loan from Valencia ahead of January and Keisuke Honda from CSKA Moscow, but the San Siro coach has no interest in additional transfer targets as he thinks his squad is already too inflated.

"We have to reduce the squad size, and I will talk with the management about it. Our squad should consist of 24 to 25 players," he told reporters on Saturday.

"I don't want to talk about [reported Milan target] Radja Nainggolan because he is a Cagliari player, and I don't want to disturb him.

"We have talked a lot about the transfer market, but the management will take care of that. Rami and Honda are two good signings.

"Mattia De Sciglio and Stephan El Shaarawy have barely played this season [due to injury]. Our squad will be complete in January when our injured players return."

M'Baye Niang broke into Milan's first team quickly last season but has been used far fewer times this campaign and Allegri believes a loan move to Montpellier - which is on the verge of being confirmed - will aid his progress.

"Niang to Montpellier would be a good choice for him," he added. "Niang started well at Milan, but then he perhaps felt too much responsibility."

The Rossoneri are languishing in 10th place heading into gameweek 17 and rumours have linked the club's former midfielder Clarence Seedorf with Allegri's job.

Defeat in Sunday's Derby della Madonnina against Inter could pile even more pressure on the head coach and Allegri has demanded an improvement in performance.

"It's very unlikely that we will win tomorrow against Inter if we play like we did against Roma," he added. "We made many mistakes in that match.

"Now our job is to climb up the Serie A table, qualify for the Champions League quarter-final and reach the Coppa Italia final."

Mazzarri: Milan derby worth more than three points

Dec 21, 2013 2:23:00 PM

The Inter boss is eagerly awaiting his first clash with the Rossoneri and feels recent transfer speculation has brought the best out of Fredy Guarin

Inter boss Walter Mazzarri believes Sunday's derby with AC Milan is worth more than just the three points on offer.

The Nerazzurri approach their first derby with the former Napoli boss at the helm nine points clear of their arch-rivals and the 52-year-old knows what is at stake for the people of the city.

"Of course the Milan derby has a special fascination to it and as a coach I try not to think about it until I step on to the field. At that moment I will realise what the Milan derby really is," he said at a press conference.

"I must focus on helping the team play against Milan so the players can be ready to approach this game. I am more concerned with seeing my players adopt my style of football – one that is pleasing to watch, attacking and moving ball to feet.

"Rationally, the derby is worth three points, but we are close to the fans and realise the difference. Certain games can also help with self confidence or affect you psychologically. It means more to the supporters.

"A victory would be a huge confidence boost for the rest of the season, that is certain. If it goes wrong, I’ll have to work to turn over a new leaf and focus on the next games."

Midfielder Fredy Guarin has been linked with a January move to the Premier League and Mazzarri feels the speculation has driven the Colombian on to perform at his best.

"The way I see it, Guarin responded on the field. I had many individual meetings with him, as in my view he hasn’t expressed over 90 minutes his full potential.

"I called him on Tuesday and said he’d played the best game against Napoli, showing that consistency I wanted. Perhaps these rumours stimulated him to give his best."

Sunday's Derby della Madonnina is due to kick off at 20:45CET.

Fan ban lifted for Milan derby

(Reuters) - Inter Milan will have their hardcore "ultra" supporters present for Sunday's Milan derby after the Italian Football Federation's (FIGC) Court of Justice suspended a partial stadium closure while it carries out further investigations.

AS Roma will also have their most vocal fans present when they host Catania on Sunday after a similar suspension was lifted for the same reason.

"The Inter and Roma curvas have been reopened with an interim ordinance suspending the penalty and asks for further investigations to be carried out by the Federal Prosecutor's Office," wrote the FIGC (www.figc.it) on its website on Friday.

The FIGC had announced on Tuesday the two-match section closures following incidents of alleged offensive chanting by away fans during matches last weekend.

Inter were punished after "territorially discriminatory" chants against Napoli fans during their 4-2 defeat at the San Paolo Stadium on Sunday, leading to the closure of the Curva Nord section of the San Siro.

Roma were hit with the closure of the Curva Sud section of the Stadio Olimpico after alleged racist chanting directed at AC Milan striker Mario Balotelli in Monday's 2-2 draw at the San Siro, a claim disputed by the club.

"In the past we have been quick to condemn incidents of racism but in this case we are convinced that nothing like that happened," Roma general manager Mauro Baldissoni said.

Inter go into the derby in fifth place on 28 points, seven behind third-placed Napoli, while unbeaten Roma lie second on 38 points, five behind leaders Juventus.

AC Milan are 10th on 19 points.

Serie A Wrap: Juventus finish 2013 five points clear, Roma maintain unbeaten run

23 December 2013

406867header.jpg

Juventus and Roma took full advantage of Napoli's failure to win on Saturday by putting four past their respective opponents on Sunday.

Serie A leaders Juve were the far superior side as they brushed aside Atalanta 4-1 to maintain their five-point lead over second-placed Roma.

The men from Turin broke the deadlock after just six minutes when Carlos Tevez scored his fourth goal in his last two league games. Atalanta soon levelled through Maximiliano Moralez, who became the first Serie A player to score against Gianluigi Buffon in 745 minutes of football.

But Juventus stepped up a gear after the interval, with Paul Pogba, Fernando Llorente and Arturo Vidal all finding the back of the net.

Roma, meanwhile, stretched their unbeaten league run to 19 with a 4-0 thumping of basement club Catania.

Mehdi Benatia set the ball rolling in the 18th minute before - like Juve - Roma found their stride in the second half.

Mattia Destro and Gervinho added their names to the scoresheet either side of a second Benatia strike to make sure of three points that see Rudi Garcia's men go five clear of Napoli.

At San Siro, Rodrigo Palacio scored a dramatic late winner to seal maximum points for Inter in a derby encounter that heaps further pressure on city rivals Milan.

The Argentine's cheeky flicked finish four minutes from time was swiftly followed by a red card for Sulley Muntari after an altercation with Zdravko Kuzmanovic on another miserable night for Milan coach Massimiliano Allegri.

Defeat leaves them 27 points off leaders Roma and just five point clear of the relegation zone, while Inter leapfrog Verona into fifth.

Fiorentina closed the gap on third place to just three points with a 1-0 victory over Sassuolo, while Verona kept pace with the chasing pack in a convincing 4-1 win against Lazio, who have just one triumph from their last eight league fixtures.

With the goals flying in all over Italy, Torino made it five games unbeaten as they thrashed lowly Chievo 4-1 and Sampdoria held Parma to a 1-1 draw.

At the other end of the table, Alessandro Diamanti scored the only goal as Bologna hauled themselves out of the relegation zone with a 1-0 win against Genoa.

Petkovic to take Switzerland reins

350173_heroa.jpg

Dec 23, 2013 4:48:00 PM

The Swiss FA confirmed on Monday that the current Lazio coach will take over from Ottmar Hitzfeld when the German steps down after the 2014 World Cup

Vladimir Petkovic has been confirmed as the next Switzerland coach on the same day he appears likely to be sacked by Lazio.

The club's president Claudio Lotito offered a strong hint on Monday that the 50-year-old will be shown the door due to the Biancocelesti's poor form in Serie A this season.

However, Petkovic's likely depature from Lazio will be tempered by the Swiss Football Association's confirmation that he will succeed Ottmar Hitzfeld when the German steps down after the 2014 World Cup in Brazil.

"I've obviously been closely following the national team of Switzerland and its evolution under the direction of Ottmar Hitzfeld," Petkovic said in a SFA statement.

"I am therefore aware of the legacy that I take, a well established team with excellent prospects. This is important when you consider that before starting the Euro 2016 qualifiers we will not even have the chance to take an international meeting."

Petkovic has spent the majority of his coaching career in Switzerland, enjoying spells in charge of clubs such as Young Boys and Sion.

Lazio assistant coach Antonio Manicone will be Petkovic's right-hand man once again, while Paolo Rongoni, also part of the backroom staff in Rome, will operate as Switzerland's conditioning coach.

Petkovic was due to hold talks with Lazio chief Lotito on Monday after a run of only one Serie A win in eight matches.

It has been reported in Italy that the vastly experienced Edy Reja, Petkovic's predecessor at Lazio, is set to return as coach of the Rome side until the end of the season.

Petkovic was appointed Lazio coach in June 2012 and won the Coppa Italia in his first season at the helm.

However, they are currently 10th in Serie A after losing 4-1 at Verona on Sunday.

Petkovic's days at the Stadio Olimpico appear to be numbered after Lotito stated his intention to act on Monday.

Lotito told Sky Sport Italia: "We need a shock, I'm evaluating what to do over the next few hours.

"I will meet with Petkovic, but we can't continue on this road. I don't want to change just for the sake of changing, but I know I have to.

"The future? I have a shortlist of names. I'll see what the best medicine is to start again."

Balotelli wishes Merry Christmas to derby ref

Following Milan's 1-0 defeat to Inter in the Derby della Madonnina, the Rossoneri striker took to Twitter in what appeared to be a jibe towards the official

Mario Balotelli appeared to have a subtle swipe towards referee Paolo Mazzoleni on Twitter, following AC Milan’s 1-0 defeat to Inter in the Derby della Madonnina.

Rodrigo Palacio’s 86th-minute strike consigned the Rossoneri to their sixth league defeat of the season and Balotelli wasted little time in taking to the social network to express his feelings.

4MWXfeN.jpg

“Merry Christmas and happy new year to everybody, and the referee too (winking face),” Balotelli tweeted.

The forward was thwarted by his former club but, despite failing to convert a number of chances, Balotelli clearly felt the referee had a part to play in his side’s loss at San Siro.

The 23-year-old took to the field wearing yet another pair of eye-catching footwear. After wearing boots covered in newspaper headlines referencing himself last week he donned new 'Why Always Puma?' boots for the first time on Sunday.

Milan find themselves down in 13th place in the Serie A standings and 12 points behind their city rivals Inter, who sit in 5th. The Rossoneri play their next game at home to Atalanta on January 6.

Capello unsure over Seedorf´s Milan credentials

27 December 2013

407348header.jpg

Former Milan boss Fabio Capello is not convinced Clarence Seedorf would benefit from taking the role from Massimiliano Allegri.

Current coach Allegri has seen his position come under intense scrutiny for much of the season, with the 18-time Serie A winners going into the mid-season break 13th in the table.

Their last outing saw Allegri's men beaten by Inter in the Derby della Madonnina, with Italy manager Cesare Prandelli and former Milan midfielder Seedorf linked with the job.

However, Capello - who won four Serie A titles and a UEFA Champions League as San Siro coach - claims it would be a big ask for Seedorf's first role in management.

"Clarence has ability and I have an excellent relationship with him," the current Russia coach told La Gazzetta dello Sport.

"I remember that it was me who advised him to go and play in Brazil seeing as he was thinking about the UAE and Russia a year ago.

"Evidently this experience is serving him well, but to immediately take the responsibility of the Milan job is something else."

Seedorf currently plies his trade in Brazil with Botafogo, having left San Siro in 2012

Milan deny Balotelli sale rumours

28 December 2013

407483header.jpg

Milan have refuted rumours striker Mario Balotelli is for sale, amid claims president Silvio Berlusconi had made him available for transfer.

Reports in the Italian media had suggested the former Manchester City and Inter forward would be allowed to depart San Siro, with Berlusconi allegedly planning to offload the 23-year-old during the January transfer window.

Balotelli has previously been linked with a move back to England, with Chelsea thought to be among his suitors.

But the Serie A club have strongly denied claims he will be sold and insist there are no plans to allow Balotelli to leave.

A statement on the club's official website read: "AC Milan denies absolutely and vehemently the statements that have been attributed to the president of Milan about a possible placement of Mario Balotelli on the market."

The Italy international joined Milan in last January's transfer window, bringing an end to a three-year stay at the Etihad Stadium.

Balotelli notched 12 goals in 13 league appearances for Massimiliano Allegri's side last season and has six in 12 in the 2013-14 Serie A campaign.

Milan have endured a frustrating season and are 13th with 19 points from 17 games..

Criscito poised for Fiorentina move

28 December 2013

407458header.jpg

Zenit St Petersburg defender Domenico Criscito is closing in on a return to Serie A with Fiorentina, his agent has hinted.

The 26-year-old left Genoa for Russia in an €11 million move in June 2011 and has since made 66 appearances for the club, winning the Russian Premier League in his first season.

Criscito has spent the festive period in his homeland, and has been linked with an imminent move to Stadio Artemio Franchi, as well as previous clubs Juventus and Genoa.

The left-back's representative, Andrea D’Amico, told La Gazzetta dello Sport that the Italy international is fully open to making a move back to Serie A.

"We are ready to talk to Fiorentina without problems," he said.

Criscito has made nine league appearances for Zenit this season after recovering from a ruptured cruciate ligament.

He has also made a tentative return to the international scene after being dropped from Cesare Prandelli's squad for UEFA Euro 2012 amid allegations of match-fixing, which Criscito was cleared of any involvement in.

El Shaarawy out for 10 weeks after surgery

28 December 2013

407491header.jpg

Milan have confirmed Stephan El Shaarawy faces up to 10 weeks out after undergoing surgery on his right foot.

The 21-year-old has endured a tough season so far due to numerous injury problems and has been restricted to just four Serie A appearances.

A fractured right metatarsal had kept him out of action for two months already and after the issue failed to heal properly, Milan opted to send the Italy international to have surgery.

Milan, like El Shaarawy, are having a season to forget as they sit in 13th place with only four wins from 17 Serie A matches and they look set to be without the attacker until mid-March.

The injury also puts the player's FIFA World Cup participation in jeopardy should he not return on schedule, although coach Cesare Prandelli has previously revealed physical tests in April will determine who is in contention.

He said: "The most important thing will be in April when I'll call 33-35 players in for physical tests. From that group we'll pick the final 23 for Brazil, because this World Cup is going to take up a lot of energy.

"Up until April everyone is open to be picked, including the 'old guard' like Francesco Totti, Luca Toni, Antonio Di Natale and Antonio Cassano."

Conte: Juventus can still achieve an historic season

While the coach admits his side's elimination in the Champions League still hurts, the prospect of a unique treble is providing motivation for the second half of the campaign

Antonio Conte says Juventus can still ensure the 2013-14 campaign becomes a permanent fixture in the club's history books despite their Champions League exit.

The Italian champions lost out to Real Madrid and Galatasaray in Europe's elite club competition but Conte has his sights set on winning a unique treble.

Juventus can still secure a third-straight Serie A title, as well as the Europa League – with the final being held at the club's home stadium – and what would be a record-breaking 10th Coppa Italia prize.

The Juve coach was speaking after he won the Dubai Globe Soccer Awards title for Coach of the Year ahead of Rafael Benitez and Jurgen Klopp.

Conte said: "We want to roll up our sleeves in 2014. We want to take the Europa League, especially as the final will be played at the Juventus Stadium.

"This season we still want to win it all. There could be a third Scudetto in a row and the Coppa Italia too. If we win the Coppa that would be a record, as we could be the first side to win it 10 times.

"The Champions League elimination in Istanbul still stings, but we couldn't really play football that day against Galatasaray. Next season we will resume our assault on that competition."

On winning the coaching award in Dubai, Conte was keen to thank his players for their performances over the calendar year.

He added: "This honour fills me with pride and I above all thank my players for helping me achieve this award. Without doubt, the credit is to be split with my lads.

"Will I win the Fifa Coach of the Year award? There is still a very long way to go before achieving that because you need to win international trophies like Pep Guardiola and Jose Mourinho did."

Reja poised to take Lazio job: We can achieve great things together

Dec 30, 2013 9:43:00 PM

The 68-year-old, who stood down as coach in 2012, has admitted that he is ready to replace Vladimir Petkovic at the helm of the Biancocelesti

Edoardo Reja has all but confirmed that he is returning to the Stadio Olimpico to take charge of Lazio.

Current coach Vladimir Petkovic has yet to be officially removed from his position but the 50-year-old, who has been under pressure because of the capital club's poor performances this season, announced earlier this month that he had agreed to take charge of Switzerland after next summer's World Cup.

It has been widely reported that Biancocelesti president Claudio Lotito had lined up Reja as an immediate replacement and the former Napoli coach has now publicly stated that he is looking forward to going back to Rome.

"Lazio and I can achieve some great things together, starting from this season,” the 68-year-old told La Repubblica.

Reja spent two years at the Stadio Olimpico before resigning as Lazio boss in the summer of 2012 - despite the best efforts of Lotito.

The Biancocelesti, who won the Coppa Italia last season under Petkovic, are currently languishing in 10th place in Serie A.

The Italian has admitted he will leave the club at the end of the season and highlighted injuries as a big reason behind the Rossoneri's failings this term

Massimiliano Allegri has acknowledged 2013 will be his "last Christmas" at AC Milan, but is determined to bow out by securing European football for the club.

Allegri took charge of the club in 2010 and won Serie A in his first season at San Siro, but the Rossoneri's fortunes since then have dipped dramatically.

Star men Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Thiago Silva were both sold to Paris Saint-Germain in the summer of 2012 and only a resurgence in the second half of last season secured Champions League football this term.

But with the club already 17 points adrift of third place, Milan will need a miracle if they are to repeat that comeback and Allegri has now admitted he is in the final months of his reign.

"I do not know who will be the new coach, but it is a problem that does not concern me. Of course, this is my last Christmas at AC Milan," the Italian said when quizzed over the possiblity of former Milan midfielder Clarence Seedorf replacing him.

"I decided to stay on for another season. I liked the idea of staying on and finishing the job, but four years with one club is many."

However, the 46-year-old has refused to give up hope of leaving the club with a parting gift, by securing European qualification via the Italian Cup.

"It's very difficult. We are 17 points behind third place," he added.

"But we have to chase and improve our position in the table. All this can serve well as an incentive to do well. There is still the Italian Cup, which is still gives us a good possibility to remain in Europe."
