The former England midfielder, who spent 12 seasons at Old Trafford and made over 300 appearances, will work with the club's reserve team with a view to going into management
Oct 21, 2012 12:44:00 PM
By Rhys Turrell
Former Manchester United midfielder Nicky Butt has returned to the club in a coaching capacity, aiming to gain experience ahead of a possible future in management.
The 37-year-old, who was part of the famous class of 1992 alongside the likes of Gary Neville, Paul Scholes and David Beckham, made 387 appearances for the senior team before moving to Newcastle in 2004.
Ending his playing career in 2011 after a brief spell in China and subsequently obtaining his coaching badges, Butt is set to earn his stripes with United reserve coach Warren Joyce before looking for a top job of his own.
"Nicky is with the reserves," United boss Sir Alex Ferguson told the club's official website. "He's completed his badges and is just getting a bit of experience with us so there's every chance of that [him going into management].
"He's had a few opportunities to take on jobs but wanted just a wee bit of a chance to revisit the training ground again to get himself back into sync, which we're happy to do because he was a fantastic servant to us.
"I don't know what his long-term future is but, in the meantime, he's helping out with the reserves."
Alongside his glittering career at Old Trafford, during which he won a Champions League trophy and six Premier League medals, Butt also made 39 appearances for England and United youngster Tom Thorpe welcomed his input.
"It's brilliant," the defender enthused, "especially when a player with a lot of experience comes back and has done it from an early age.
"He was at the club for quite a while and has gone through to the first team. It's great for him to pass on his experience and different ways of playing with different styles."
Serbia tight-lipped about racism investigation The White Eagles official has ensured that analysis of the ill-tempered incidents is ongoing, and promises some "very interesting information" when the results are published

Serbia general secretary Zoran Lakovic has commented on the current investigation into the events that followed their Under-21 match against England in Krusevac.
After a last-minute goal by Connor Wickham secured the Young Lions' progress to Euro 2013 ugly clashes erupted between the players and staff on both sides, while Sunderland full-back Danny Rose was allegedly racially abused.
"We are conducting an internal investigation, analysing every detail and talking with a lot of people and I can tell you we have some very interesting information," the Serbia – Football Against Racism executive told reporters.
"We have reviewed our CCTV footage and many people will be surprised when they see the results of our investigation," he continued.
"I think we will come out very soon with our findings, certainly before Uefa finishes its investigation. Until then I do not want to talk about anything regarding this subject."
Uefa has opened disciplinary proceedings against the Serbia Football Association.
Sir Alex Ferguson to usher in revolutionary diamond formation at Manchester United
The Red Devils manager admits he could go against the club's entire history and pursue a formation without wingers, in order to make the club more unpredictable and harder to beat
Oct 22, 2012 9:23:00 PM
By John Christodoulou
Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson has revealed a proposed switch to a diamond formation would be revolutionary as well as contradict much of the history at the Old Trafford club.
The 19-time Premier League champions have forever been associated with the traditional method of using wingers, with some of the club's greats plying their trade out wide, however the veteran coach has admitted the club may have to experiment with the unfamiliar narrow formation to become more unpredictable to opposition teams.
The change in style could be implemented during the Red Devils' Champions League encounter with Braga, and with the recent acquisition of Japan international Shinji Kagawa and Robin Van Persie, paired with the emergence of Tom Cleverly and Danny Welbeck, the long-serving manager is aware that the club may need to change tactics to give the squad more options.
"If it turns out we play the diamond consistently it would be revolutionary because it is going against our history," said Ferguson.
"But the level of the game in England and Europe now is so high that making yourself unpredictable is going to be a strength.
"Teams will have to think if we are going to use two out wide or the diamond because we have players capable of doing both things.
"Kagawa and Cleverley can play really well in the type of game that a diamond offers, whilst in Nani, Ashley Young and Antonio Valencia we have very good wide players."
The Manchester United manager is confident his team will be able to adapt to any change in formation, but admitted some players, such as the Japanese playmaker, may have to play a different role to the one they favour.
"The initial reason for taking him was his ability to play behind the strikers," said Ferguson. "In the last couple of games he has played middle to right.
"It is not a problem for him because he is still in a forward position and still has the ability to create as he does from the central part."
Disgraced! Leeds supporter jailed for 16 weeks after attack on goalkeeper Kirkland
By MICHAEL WALKER PUBLISHED: 21:30 GMT, 22 October 2012 | UPDATED: 06:47 GMT, 23 October 2012
Leeds United have scored 18 times in their eight matches at Elland Road this season, so the Charlton keeper Ben Hamer will have much to focus upon when he takes his place in goal there on Tuesday evening.Because of events at Hillsborough on Friday night, though, Hamer could be forgiven the odd glance over his shoulder.
Locked up: Aaron Cawley was jailed for fourth months after assaulting Chris Kirland on Friday
Disgrace: The fan caught Sheffield Wednesday keeper Chris Kirkland flush in the face with a sickening assault
Aaron Cawley, the Leeds 'fan' who confronted and pushed over Sheffield Wednesday keeper Chris Kirkland, was jailed for 16 weeks on Monday.
Kirkland, who gave a witness statement, and others who had called for a custodial sentence, will be pleased with one aspect of the decision at Sheffield Magistrates Court.
Leeds United released a statement in which they expressed regret that the sentence was not longer.
Cawley, the subject of two previous breached banning orders, was given a six-year ban this time. He must also stay at least a mile away from grounds where Leeds are playing.
To Elland back: Cawley will now spend four months behind bars for his actions - years after he spent the day as a Leeds mascot and had his picture taken with Robbie Keane
But the effectiveness of football banning orders has been publicly questioned by Cawley's behaviour and although the 21-year-old from Cheltenham pleaded guilty to assault and is said to have expressed remorse, an invisible line as well as a visible one was crossed on Friday.
Cawley not only breached his ban again and the thin stewarding at the Leppings Lane end of Hillsborough, he broke the guarantee of personal safety that every player should have at every ground they attend. Without that guarantee, a player's feeling of security diminishes.
Players often comment on intimidating atmospheres such as that which often exists at Elland Road and on many occasions they are inspired by the intimidation as well as daunted by it. But once that changes into a feeling of physical vulnerability, then the stadium dimensions have altered.
Pain: Kirkland holds his face after the incident
Despite Elland Road's reputation, in the last 40 years there have been three pitch invasions and none of the sort that occurred at Hillsborough. In this copycat world the hope is that others do not take conscious or unconscious heed of Cawley.
Five years ago there was not an outbreak of stupid aggression in Scotland after a Celtic 'fan' ran on the pitch at a Champions League game and caught the AC Milan goalkeeper Dida, albeit lightly.
Last January a 17-year-old Sunderland 'fan' pushed Newcastle keeper Steve Harper in the back after a home goal. While playing for Newcastle, Shay Given has also been confronted at the Stadium of Light by pitch invaders. But the shock of Friday at Hillsborough was the level of force with which Cawley laid hands on Kirkland's face.
Leeds manager Neil Warnock was understandably derided - by some Leeds fans as well as Wednesday manager Dave Jones - for suggesting that Kirkland had somehow made a meal of a blindside attack.
Treatment: Leeds fans chant and jeer while Kirkland lies injured
Jones, again understandably, was also aggrieved that Warnock sent his players to salute the travelling Leeds contingent at the end of the drawn game. Despite yesterday being a normal pre-match day in which managers speak, Warnock was silent. Leeds chairman Ken Bates, who speaks for some Leeds fans, told the Yorkshire Post: 'What is encouraging is that I am told the vast majority of Leeds fans were as appalled by what happened as everyone else.
'The idiot who ran on the pitch better not go anywhere near Elland Road again. There are a lot of people angered by what he did. 'We have been working hard as a club to improve our image over the past few years. But this guy has done so much damage to that. It isn't fair on the overwhelming majority of Leeds fans.'
Ripped down: A sign is torn from its berth at Hillsborough
Bates would not be alone at Elland Road in endorsing the opinion of Allan Clarke when he was manager in the early 1980s. Clarke offered to birch Leeds hooligans on the pitch at half-time.The message-board culture is not definitive but it can be taken as a form of barometer and there are many authentic Leeds fans who are disgusted by Cawley's behaviour. Others are not.
Leeds' league attendances fell by 14 per cent last season. This season they are averaging 23,000 at home in the Championship. There will be various explanations for that, from price to unhappiness with player sales and Bates's continued presence. The attendance tonight will be of interest.
There will definitely be one less than there would have been. Aaron Cawley is locked up but it will be a test of policing, and of the supporter self-policing that Jones has talked of, if Cawley is not to attend a Leeds game before 2018.
Tottenham keeper Friedel happy with ‘healthy’ Lloris rivalry The former clear No.1 American feels the ‘friendly’ competition between himself and the Frenchman is good for the club and expects a policy of rotation this season
Oct 22, 2012 6:50:00 PM
By Andy Robson
Tottenham goalkeeper Brad Friedel has insisted his "helathy" rivalry with Hugo Lloris is for the greater good of the club and says it will come down to who manager Andre Villa-Boas feels is best suited to face individual opposition.
The Spurs stalwart's run of 310 consecutive Premier League starts ended when Lloris was chosen ahead of him to face Aston Villa on October 7, but he was re-instated for the derby match with Chelsea on Saturday, with Lloris having played two games for France in the week.
Friedel has also dampened reports of a rift between himself and both Lloris and Villas-Boas, denying there was ever any truth to such stories:
"The media wanted to make out that it was this big fight between Hugo and myself and the manager, but there was never a big fight," he told Sports Illustrated.
"The fact is Tottenham have been looking for the last year and a half for a long-term No.1 goalkeeper."
The former USA international feels that because his fitness has remained at such a high level for a 41 year-old, he may have surprised many at the club who perhaps thought he would unable to compete at such an age.
"I don't think they envisioned what my fitness levels would be at this age and I sort of surprised myself,” he added.
"So we have a competition now. It's healthy, but there's a competition. It's friendly."
Friedel also accepts that Villas-Boas is able to choose between the pair based on the unique strengths of each team they face, and eludes to the astute foresight and man-management Villas-Boas has tackled this conundrum with.
He added: "It was always in his plans to play me against Chelsea and I knew from the point he benched me against Aston Villa.
"It's going to be a situation where Andre will choose a team that he feels will win the game on the day and that's how it'll be from now until the end of the season. I don't think anyone will be 'guaranteed' starts, if you like."
His record-breaking run of 310 games, spanning nine seasons of Premier League football, came to an end against Villa, but Friedel himself realised that realistically it would be this season that it would eventually be broken:
"When I ended last season and played all the games, I went into the summer sort of half-expecting this year would be when the run would end at some stage," he continued.
"You never know when it will end. But 310 consecutive games, can I complain? No. I never put myself out on the field in a game just to make that number, and I don't think any manager put me out there because of the number.
"It's an achievement that I'm proud of, not just because of the number but ultimately because I've kept my form up for this long."
Carroll: I don't have anything to prove, I wasn't given a fair chance at Liverpool
By SPORTSMAIL REPORTER PUBLISHED: 08:17 GMT, 23 October 2012 | UPDATED: 08:17 GMT, 23 October 2012
Liverpool misfit Andy Carroll has claimed he was never given a 'fair chance' to succeed at Anfield. The England striker scored just six goals in 44 appearances after his £35million switch from Newcastle.
On a mission: Carroll aims to hit the goal trail at West Ham
Carroll was farmed out on loan to West Ham after Brendan Rodgers replaced Kenny Dalglish. But the 23-year-old feels he could have adapted his style to suit Rodgers. 'I haven't really had a fair chance at Liverpool,' Carroll said.'I was really told that I should move on to keep playing regular football, and obviously then Sam wanted me here and told me I would be playing regular games.'So, for me it was a no-brainer coming here and to play.'Obviously, I didn't really get a chance there.'A new manager came in and I wasn't part of his plans. For me to play football, that was my chance to do that. That is why I am here at Upton Park.
Struggle: Andy Carroll failed to shine at Liverpool
'I think I could fit into every system. I believe in what I can do. Obviously he [Rodgers] has his beliefs and he didn't think that.'But for me, obviously, it was better to move on instead of waiting for my chance - which he told me might not come.'Coming here, I have got a great chance to start games and score goals, which I haven't really had many of last season.'I don't think I have got a point to prove, that is the wrong way to put it.'I know what I can do and the ability I have got. I know what I am capable of.'If other people don't believe it, that is fine. I just get on with it.
'But at the end of the day, I know what I can do.'Hammers boss Sam Allardyce admitted he did not know if his on-loan striker will stay in East London all season.Liverpool have only one senior striker in Luis Suarez, after failing to buy before the summer window closed and then losing Fabio Borini for months with a foot injury.'I think that depends,' said Allardyce on the possibility of Carroll being recalled early to Anfield.
'Obviously when January comes around it will be assessed then, on just what has happened at Liverpool and how well Andy is doing.'He is still only a young man and he has got a lot of improving to do. But he is such an important player for us already.'We have got off to this start and everybody has played their part but as the old saying goes, the front man plays well, the team plays well.'

The Manchester United boss believes Chelsea, Manchester City and his side have created a gap at the top of the league and says he will be surprised if one of the three didn't win it

By Husmukh Kerai
Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson has ruled both Arsenal and Tottenham out of contention for the Premier League title this season.
The 70-year-old believes his side, along with Chelsea and Manchester City, have stolen a march on the chasing pack and the eventual league champions will be one of those three.
Despite less than a quarter of the season having been played, Sir Alex views the Premier League as a three-horse race.
"I think Chelsea, City and ourselves are creating that little gap from the rest," he told The Mirror.
"It's difficult to be dead certain, but I would be surprised if one of us three didn't win it."
United travel to Stamford Bridge to face early pace-setters Chelsea on Sunday, a game that Sir Alex thinks could have major implications for the title race.
"Our game on Sunday will be important to us, there's no doubt about that," he said.
"There are lot of big games still to come, of course, but I think it will be close.
"There are a lot of ways a league can be decided. The way we lost it last season is one way - on goal difference. That was unusual for us.
"But the way the league is now, any one of the three could win it, there's no doubt about that.
"All of us have strong squads, particularly Chelsea and ourselves, in terms of recent history.
"That will always guarantee we will be able to handle the number of games you have to play."
Van Persie was sold for football reasons, claims Arsenal chairman Peter Hill-Wood
The Dutch striker left the Emirates Stadium in the summer to join Manchester United in a £24 million move after being disillusioned with the path the club was being taken
Oct 25, 2012 11:17:00 AM
Arsenal chairman Peter Hill-Wood has insisted the the club's AGM that Robin van Persie was sold for "footballing reasons".
Last season's Premier League top goalscorer joined Manchester United in a £24-million move after citing disillusionment with the direction the club was being taken following seven years without a trophy and other high-profile players being sold in previous transfer windows.
When asked by a shareholder whether the Dutchman was sold to increase the club's profit, Hill-Wood replied: "We undertake our transfers for football reasons and not FFP. Money is available to Arsene."
Chief Executive Ivan Gazidis, the subject of a satirical leaflet being handed out prior to the event, stated that he felt that the club was still in a position to compete for silverware.
"Our ambition is all about football - to compete at the very top of the game here and in Europe. To win trophies. It's important we understand our off-field journey if we want to understand our football future."
"The club is increasingly well positioned to take advantage of its excellent global reputation. Within the next two years Arsenal will have the financial resources to sit and compete with the biggest clubs in the world."
"I have no doubt we can and will return club to winning trophies and drive it forward to new heights. Standing together we can make Arsenal one of the leading clubs in the world."
"We have outperformed that spend every single year for 15 years. An extraordinary record of consistency."
The north Londoners were recently revealed by a survey to charge the most for a season ticket for a second year running.
And the rising cost of ticket prices has also been the subject of much criticism from Arsenal fans recently but Gazidis defended the club's position.
He added: "We've only had two season ticket prices increases in the last seven years. They have not kept us at pace with rising costs in the game."
Major shareholder Stan Kroenke reitrerated the strong financial position that the club are currently in citing that they have no debt to pay off.
"We [Kroenke Sports Enterprises] have record in sports round world. We've never put any debt on this club. We've never said money is not to be spent."
EXCLUSIVE: Fergie lines dramatic swoop for Cole as United boss attempts to exploit Chelsea's contract conundrum
By NEIL ASHTON and SAMI MOKBEL PUBLISHED: 22:00 GMT, 26 October 2012 | UPDATED: 08:42 GMT, 27 October 2012
Sir Alex Ferguson is ready to make a shock move and take Ashley Cole on a free transfer. The Manchester United manager wants Cole at Old Trafford and is planning to take advantage as European champions Chelsea stall over a new deal for the world's best left back.
Middle man: United's interest in Ashley Cole will add spice to Sunday's top-of-the-table clash
His interest in Cole will add another dimension to United's trip to Stamford Bridge for Sunday's Barclays Premier League clash.Ferguson is a huge admirer of Cole, 31, and has reminded his coaching staff that he is one of the few players in world football to have got the upper hand on Cristiano Ronaldo.
During Ronaldo's time at Old Trafford, Cole would show him an imaginary pocket during matches to demonstrate his influence over the Portugal winger. Out of contract at the end of the season, Cole is also best friends with United striker Wayne Rooney. The defender has only been offered a one-year extension by Chelsea chief executive Ron Gourlay which fits in with the west London club's new policy of offering only season-by-season deals to players over 30.But with United in the market for a left back as doubts persist over the future of Patrice Evra, it could cost them.
Ferguson is shocked that Cole, widely regarded as the best left back on the planet for a number of seasons, has been allowed to run down his contract. He has been outstanding in Chelsea's early season run, with United anxious to stay in touch at the top of the table by ending the leaders' unbeaten Premier League run on Sunday. The end of Cole's feud with Rio Ferdinand has also helped clear the way for Ferguson to sign the England defender.
Top man: Cole has been outstanding for Chelsea this season
Truce: Cole and Rio Ferdinand
The pair are expected to shake hands before the clash.Ferguson said: 'I think Rio and his brother Anton have done the right thing there. I think it's bubbling along, that race issue, it's not completely
going away.
Warning: Chelsea striker Fernando Torres
'But the thing is the awareness is getting stronger and the PFA are, I'm sure, doing their best to support it. The FA have to do more with UEFA and FIFA, that's without question. As far as the actual game itself, we just carry on concentrating on the football side of it.'Blues boss Roberto Di Matteo has warned Fernando Torres he is not afraid to axe his £50million striker.Torres has scored five goals this season and shown glimpses of the form that made him one of the most feared forwards in the world during his time at Atletico Madrid and Liverpool.
However, his performances remain inconsistent and Di Matteo insists that despite Torres's current status as Chelsea's first-choice centre forward, he is not scared to drop the 28-year-old Spaniard, who cut a lonely, frustrated figure on Tuesday in defeat at Shakhtar Donetsk. Di Matteo said: 'I've shown in the past in terms of rotation of the team (that I can drop players). I have done that with everybody. 'Maybe it wasn't his best game (against Shakhtar). I don't think it was a question of being happy or not being happy.
'He was in a good state of mind. He is training well.'Chelsea will be without Frank Lampard, who is sidelined for two weeks with the calf injury he suffered in the midweek defeat.United have also found the Champions League costly - their Japan forward Shinji Kagawa faces four weeks out after twisting his knee in the 3-2 midweek win over Braga.
Villa boss Lambert will drop £24m man Bent to the bench again for Norwich clash
By NEIL MOXLEY PUBLISHED: 22:17 GMT, 26 October 2012 | UPDATED: 22:23 GMT, 26 October 2012
Paul Lambert will take the biggest gamble of his Aston Villa career so far by once more relegating Darren Bent to the substitutes’ bench for Saturday's crunch clash with Norwich City. The Scot is set to exclude Villa’s club record £24million signing, plumping instead for Christian Benteke and Gabriel Agbonlahor as his first-choice strike pairing as he sets about improving a return of just one victory in eight Premier League fixtures.Lambert recalled Bent to his starting line-up for the game at Fulham last week but is ready to resume his cool stance towards a forward who has been the club’s most prolific scorer in the past two seasons.
Gamble: Bent in training on Friday, ahead of a game he isn't expected to start in
The Scot first sprang a surprise when he left Bent out of the side to face West Brom in a West Midlands derby three weeks ago. Bent came off the bench to rescue a point for Villa with only his third touch of the ball but again found himself surplus for a trip to Tottenham one week later. That game ended in defeat and although the England forward was included for Villa’s last outing at Craven Cottage, he again cut an anonymous figure.Lambert has been at pains to quell any talk of a rift between the pair but it is clear that something is amiss. Villa’s boss has also scotched any talk that Bent’s alienation is part of a long-term plan to rid the club of its high earners.
Under pressure: Paul Lambert needs a result against Norwich
The backdrop to Saturday's fixture — with existing contractual disputes to resolve between the two clubs following Lambert’s defection to Villa Park during the summer — only adds to the intrigue. But with Villa already looking like they are in for a relegation fight, defeat against the Canaries will leave Villa’s boss with serious questions to answer.Lambert has tried to play down any personal significance about the game but knows it is one they must win.The 43-year-old has had a tough time at Villa Park since his acrimonious departure from Carrow Road at the end of last season.‘The Norwich game only has spice because I left,’ he said. ‘But football moves on and it’s a massive game. We have to win.’
Bale likely to be Real's top summer target as giants eye £50m bid
By SPORTSMAIL REPORTER PUBLISHED: 22:05 GMT, 26 October 2012 | UPDATED: 22:10 GMT, 26 October 2012
Real Madrid are continuing to scout Tottenham’s Gareth Bale as they consider a summer bid.Bale, 23, has signed a contract extension until 2016 at Tottenham, who would demand around £50million if they are pushed into a sale.
The main man: Gareth Bale scores against Manchester United last month
Spanish newspaper AS reported that the Spanish giants remain extremely keen on the Welshman.Real signed Luka Modric recently, and Tottenham could again lose one of their stop stars at the end of this current campaign.According to The Mirror, Mourinho has met with Real president Florentino Perez to try and push for a bid to be made.
Ready to make a move? Real Madrid manager Jose Mourinho
There has also been the suggestion in the Spanish press that Real's bitter rivals Barcelona could make a bid for Bale.Tottenham will be anxious to keep hold of their prized asset, but they might struggle to hold off a huge offer from one of the La Liga giants.
Arsenal open the exit door to Walcott, Chamakh, Arshavin, Djourou and Squillaci
By SAMI MOKBEL PUBLISHED: 22:00 GMT, 26 October 2012 | UPDATED: 22:00 GMT, 26 October 2012
Arsenal are planning a clear-out in an attempt to boost their coffers even further during the January sales. The news comes just 24 hours after the club's board were heavily criticised by supporters for failing to replicate their financial success on the pitch.
On his way: Theo Walcott (left) could lead the January clearance
Theo Walcott could lead the clearance, with Marouane Chamakh, Andrey Arshavin, Johan Djourou and Sebastien Squillaci also to be made available.Arsenal are still trying to resolve their long-running contract dispute with Walcott, but if it is not sorted by January they will listen to offers for the England international. Liverpool, Juventus and Chelsea are monitoring the situation.Chamakh is wanted by former club Bordeaux, while Brazilian club Internacional are also interested in the Morocco striker. However, 28-year-old Chamakh's possible return to France is being scuppered by his £50,000-a-week wages. He is keen on a return, but Bordeaux are only willing to offer him a deal worth half that and Chamakh is unwilling to take such a drop.
Cheers: Fulham could offer an escape for Andrey Arshavin
Meanwhile, Fulham are interested in Arshavin, while the Russian would also have options in his homeland. Napoli are interested in signing Switzerland defender Djourou.January's planned auction is a continuation of Arsenal's semi-successful summer clear-out which saw unwanted players such as Manuel Almunia, Carlos Vela and Henri Lansbury leave on a permanent basis, while Nicklas Bendtner, Denilson and Park Chu-young all left on loan.
Supporters will hope funds raised from the planned January cull will be made available to Arsene Wenger to strengthen his squad, particularly after the summer losses of Robin van Persie and Alex Song. And the Frenchman, whose side have lost three out of their last five matches, admits: 'Maybe we have lost something (without Van Persie) but we need to look at that in the longer term.'Van Persie could make a goal with half a chance that is for sure, I do know that. And when you lose 40 goals somewhere (it is harder).
'I'm not saying the players are fragile but you could see in the defeat against Schalke on Wednesday night that we played all right in the first half but slowly we dropped. Is it physical or confidence? It is difficult to know.'We are in a sticky patch but have to put it into perspective. We are still in a strong position in the Champions League and Premier League - but it is important to bounce back.'This team cares. Sometimes you are surprised that they care so much. But I know they do. When you don't get the results the confidence goes quickly.'
Divers like Suarez are turning fans away from football, says Everton boss Moyes
By DOMINIC KING PUBLISHED: 22:00 GMT, 26 October 2012 | UPDATED: 23:20 GMT, 26 October 2012
David Moyes has accused players like Luis Suarez of turning supporters away from English football and he demanded serial divers be punished with bans. The Everton manager stoked the fires ahead of the 219th Merseyside derby, which will be refereed by Andre Marriner, by admitting he is 'worried' about Suarez, especially after last season when the Liverpool striker's dramatic reaction to a challenge led to Jack Rodwell being wrongly sent off. Moyes, who has long held strong views about players who go down too easily, referred to that incident yesterday as 'a dive' and believes the culture of players cheating to gain an advantage will eventually mean football loses spectators.
Spoiling the game? Moyes believes divers should be harshly punished
'I would (be concerned about Suarez) because I think he has got history,' said Moyes. 'But I am not the referee, I am not the one that (makes decisions). But I tell you what — it will turn the supporters away from football if they think players are conning their way to results. 'People like to see things done in the main correctly. If the ball hits a hand, of course you are going to claim for it. And you will take every decision you get. But when people are out to manufacture it, supporters in general will not like it.'
When Moyes was asked if his comments were directed at Suarez in particular, he replied: ‘It is generally. I think it is a discussion to be had. I don’t think supporters like the idea of players going down easily. 'Everybody who has played football and who is involved in it, you would hate to see that happening in the games you played. You would say "get up". You just find it very hard to go along with but you have to give the referee the chance to referee the game the way he sees it.'
Moyes added: 'Players should stay on their feet. I have got a view that retrospective viewing of diving should be seen as more important than some of the technology they are talking about coming in. I think if you banned players, it wouldn’t take long before you cut (diving) out.'
Shocker: Suarez is starting to earn himself something of a reputation
Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers launched an astonishing defence of Suarez following a 0-0 draw against Stoke earlier this month, claiming he is the victim of ‘wrong and unfair treatment’, and he reiterated that Liverpool have suffered at the hands of referees. Moyes, who is similarly aggrieved about decisions that have gone against Everton, regularly reminds his squad about the code of conduct he expects them to follow on the pitch and will not tolerate them diving. Rodgers said: 'I have seen it over the years - the real firecrackers of games, full of intensity and passion, which they should be because that is what derbies are about. But it is also important to stay calm.'
Outspoken: Moyes is preparing his side to face Liverpool on Sunday
My tactics? Put Micah on bench! Mancini tells City stars they are the problem - not the tactics
By CHRIS WHEELER PUBLISHED: 22:02 GMT, 26 October 2012 | UPDATED: 22:02 GMT, 26 October 2012
Roberto Mancini has responded to rumblings of discontent from within his own dressing room by warning his players that they are not good enough for Manchester City if they cannot adapt to his tactics.Micah Richards questioned his manager’s decision to switch from a flat back four to using three central defenders during Wednesday’s damaging Champions League defeat by Ajax in Amsterdam.Having initially taken the blame for failing to prepare properly for the match, Mancini came out fighting on Friday and insisted that the players — not the system — were the problem.

The Italian also suggested that Richards, who was making only his third appearance of the season after a long injury lay-off, should stay on the bench in future until he has a better grasp of the team’s tactics.Asked if the players should be able to adapt to different systems, Mancini replied: ‘Good players? Yes.‘If you are a top player it’s not important what system you use. If you don’t understand then you’re not a top player and you can’t play for a top team.‘It’s not important what Micah said after the game because we work hard every day at tactical situations and all the players know the system.‘Maybe Micah doesn’t know this because it was the first (Champions League) game for him because he was out for two-and-a-half months.‘Probably he worked less than other players, but maybe next time we play this system Micah can stay on the bench and we will use another player until he knows the system well.’
In the aftermath of another defeat that leaves City’s hopes of qualifying from Group D hanging by a thread, Richards upset his manager by saying: ‘That’s twice we have gone to a back five and conceded but the manager likes it. It’s something we’ve not worked on a lot.’ Mancini insisted that City have used three centre backs ‘a minimum of 50 times last year’, and pointed to this season’s Community Shield win over Chelsea and a battling 3-2 FA Cup defeat by Manchester United in January as two examples. He also hit back at the critics who pointed out that Ajax scored their third goal just five minutes after City had taken off Joleon Lescott.‘We conceded a third because we made a stupid mistake one versus one, not because we changed the system,’ said Mancini.
Winter is here: City players return to training on Friday wearing snoods
Fashion victims: Yaya Toure and Mario Balotelli wear snoods in training
IT MUST BE WINTER... SNOODS ARE BACK
You might well want to hide your face when you’re lying bottom of your Champions League group. But Carlos Tevez, Yaya Toure and Mario Balotelli have all known chillier times and despite the midweek debacle at Ajax, they should still be too hot for Swansea City on Saturday evening.
‘When you are losing 2-1 away, the manager should do something. Sometimes if you want to change the game you have to change something on the pitch.‘When we want to be more offensive we leave only three defenders back but, I repeat, we played this system a minimum of 50 times last year and it’s not new. We’ve changed the result every time with this system.’ Asked if he welcomes feedback from the dressing room, the City boss added: ‘It’s not important to talk because every player knows the system. Every player. I talk with the players, with my hair dryer in this hand!’ Mancini acknowledged that a team with the best defensive record in the Premier League for the past two seasons need to regain some stability at the back, starting with today’s game against Swansea at the Etihad.
Under scrutiny: City manager Roberto Mancini (centre) arrives at Carrington early on Friday morning
Captain Vincent Kompany, the bedrock of last season’s title success, and Lescott have been particularly disappointing this term.Quizzed over his best defence at present, Mancini replied: ‘I don’t have a best defence.’ But he vowed that City will overcome their latest setback, even if Champions League progress now appears to be beyond them.‘In two years we’ve won three trophies and after one defeat you think that we can go down?’ he said. ‘I don’t think so. We are strong enough for this.’
