Subject: Thanks, but spending $4m for S'pore Day is too much

I AM one of thousands of happy Singaporeans based in the United States who will be making their way by plane, car or bus to New York City today for Singapore Day. But I am also embarrassed to discover that the event will cost $4 million ('New York to draw 4,000 on S'pore Day'; last Saturday).

Much as I am looking forward to stuffing my face with chicken rice at Prospect Park in Brooklyn, I find it bewildering that the Government is prepared to spend such a considerable sum to woo overseas Singaporeans home and boost the local talent pool.

There may be far better ways to spend $4 million of taxpayers' money than on a bunch of Singaporeans living abroad, many of whom have their eye on lucrative, prestigious opportunities in their adopted countries and have no plans to return to Singapore in the foreseeable future.

No amount of fried carrot cake, 1980s music or (local TV show character) Barbarella's preening can pull people away from Wall Street, Silicon Valley, top university professorships, or the myriad other reasons why some Singaporeans choose to live abroad.

If the aim of the event is merely to remind overseas Singaporeans of their home, it may be even more overpriced.

I am grateful that the Government has me in its thoughts, but I am also uncomfortable that Singapore Day may inevitably be an expensive exercise in futility.

These kinds of events are expensive so 2-3m is probably the costs of organising them. More importantly is the reason for such events. Why har?

The Govt still dont get it until today.
Most overseas Sporeans would come back if the political ground is levelled!!! Too many PAPs will spoil the soup!!! They dont care about casinos, chicken rice blah blah but they do care about their opinions heard & they do care if their MPs atcually do listen & do something about it!!!!

if he hates the the amount spent, why did he go in the first place? Wouldn't it be worth it to spend more on a burger in his country, the undemocratic United States of America?

Without that amount of money spent and the free food, no Sinkie would have turned up.

And if you know the habits of the PAP, if there's one thing it fears more than losing money, that'll be losing face.

can anyone fnd out, how much $$$ was paid to the likes of Hosan Leong, KF Seetoh & the other media puppets-appointed for this project ?

Seems t me that such loyalty was created, simply by paying lots $$$$,
so logically speaking,
it's only the money that makes Singaporeans loyal, to this cunt' ry

Another classic case of wasteful spending by the government, looks like it is becoming a habit.

we are talking of a total of 4 spore day in new york, london, melbourne n shanghai=$15million a year annually.
that is alot of money..these money can be use for something more resourceful here right at home.

sending the mediacorp artises, rojak, chicken rice, roti prata n teh tarik hawker all the way to these countries
just to entertain oversea sporeans doesn't make sense
when these oversea citizens can just log into sammyboy, asiaone or stomp for the lastest news in spore.

seriously whoever comes out with this idea need to have his brainscan.

If you are a quitter like me, never ever attend any of these Sinkee day or join any of these Sinkee expat clubs. The pappies call these place/clubs networking, but more to collect intelligence and also a lot of CMI pian jia Sinkees loitering around these places trying to con you.

Ask who were the Organisers? This is how the 'connected' make $$$$$$$$$$$,
the last one was held in London and many "Connections" made a fortune from the
event. Sinkieland, its not how much you noe but who you noe is how to make your fortune!
