24-year-old Army regular Marcus's relationship with Wendy, 22, started with the most unlikely of beginnings -- with a fall in the snow during a ski trip.
Marcus tells his story:
"We met while I was studying in Canberra. At the time, I didn't want to commit to a relationship, because of my career commitments after my studies.
"We started off as course mates studying Information Technology together, and later became good friends. Wendy was quite popular back then as she is pretty and her height is 1.73m.
"She would always ask me for advice as to whether she should go on dates with guys who asked her out. I didn't want to commit back then, so I encouraged her to.
"On a ski trip with some friends while we were learning the basics of skiing, we fell to the ground hugging. That was when love sparked off for me.
"On the three hour return trip from the ski resort, my hands coincidently overlapped hers and in the days to come, it became a natural thing as we had developed feelings for each other. However, we denied everything and claim to be just friends when our mutual friends asked us about it.
"The relationship became official during a trip to Sydney a month later and all was wonderful until we faced our first challenge. She's from Xi'an, China, and she fears her nationality might affect my career as I'm an Army regular.
"I told her that even it really did have an effect that I'd be okay with it, as I'll continue to serve my nation regardless of my career progression.
"She also felt that my parents, relatives and friends would think negatively of her. I assured her that no matter what others said my heart would not change.
"Over the months, we communicated a lot and started living together. Even though she comes from a well-off family, she's very independent and even takes care of me. I told her about my past and she didn't mind at all.
"Our relationship grew stronger and we even started discussing about our future together. Both of us have bonds with the Singapore Government as she is under scholarship with Ngee Ann Polytechnic and needs to work here for a couple of years.
"We are on a two-month long-distance relationship currently as I need to serve my vocational attachment in the Army and she's in Xi'an spending time with her family.
"No matter how late I end work every day, I make an effort to go home and chat with her on Skype.
"When my friends ask about my girlfriend, some of them said, 'Why of all people, her?' My firm answer would be, 'I found the perfect one just like any other person in a relationship out there did."
