It was Olympics 1980 qualifiers. The winning goal was scored by Wong Kok Choy, not Fandhi Ahamd. China was among the top Asian footballing powers then. Singapore reached the qualifying final but collapsed 0:4 to Iran. In 1982, China almost reached World Cup Finals but lost to New Zealand 1:2 in a single-leg deathmatch play-off held on neutral ground in Singapore. After that, China went downhill. It was then South Korea began to climb uphill and consistently qualify for the World Cup from 1986 onward. In the 1970s, South Korea was just slightly above Thailand and Malaysia standards playing in the Merdeka Cup tournament. Japan was still considered a joke in football.[/QUOTE
I think you know little about football. You quoted" Japan was still considered a joke in football". Did you know that Japan was the only Asian country to win an Olympic football bronze medal in 1968 .
In 70s South Korea was considered among the best team with Iran. What do you mean slightly above Thailand and Malaysia. You have not mentioned about Myanmar, known as Burma, they will definitely the best team in SEA.
Those were the days during 60s and 70s. You can say Singapore is slightly above Thailand. Indonesian was also strong during the 60s, maybe on par with Malaysia with Burma always on top until the 80s. From that onward, Thailand took over.
You can also say France was not a good team until the late 80s, and also to all those Arabic countries started to become household name at that time.
