Well said...fuck the cyclists...imagine if this cyclists not licenced and insured...than even worst...no accountability...and what happened to the cyclists tat cause the crash? Ride away without any accountability?

The Lucky Plaza crash still gives me nightmares. If the guy had been on a bicycle those maids would have been able to go back to their families in something other than a box.

There can be plenty of accountability. What is not needed is red tape. The two are entirely separate entities.

Red tape often helps perpetrators evade accountability and punishment.

I have been run over by 3 uninsured cyclists in one go and was up and about in days.

I've also been hit by an insured driver and was in a plaster cast for 8 weeks. The insurance pay out provided zero comfort. It was a horribly slow recovery back to full fitness. Trying to get money out of the insurance company added insult to injury.

I've also been hit by an insured driver and was in a plaster cast for 8 weeks. The insurance pay out provided zero comfort. It was a horribly slow recovery back to full fitness. Getting the money out of the insurance company added insult to injury.

Imagine if the cyclists were insured and licensed...U would have gotten a payout and claimed mental anguish etc...u would have been out and about and get paid...and the cyclists that hit you might have been in jail and won't be a menace to society...and U got run over 3 times by cyclists? Wow...cycling is definitely not safe at all and all the more reason for them to be insured and licensed and the full force of the law thrown against them...imagine if they run over pedestrians or old ppl

In this case the 3 cyclists were all licensed but that made no difference whatsoever. In fact they held national licenses which is a step up from a club license which I have. Accidents happen.

Neither did it make any difference that the whole event was insured because there is always an excess and most equipment damage in these sorts of crashes is minimal so I was out of pocket for the stuff that broke.

On the other hand the driver that hit me was fully insured and my bike was a write off but I never got the full replacement amount. My bike at the time cost $7000 to replace and I eventually got about $5000 leaving me with a $2000 deficit to make up. Inflation had added another $800 to the cost of a similar model so all in the accident cost me almost $3000 in addition to all the pain and inconvenience.

As is always the case the devil is in the details.

Wait..how can the cyclists be licenced when there is no licence regime in the 1st place? Loads of motorists behave irresponsibly and get away scott free despite the fact that they are licensed and insured. Cyclists are hardly the primary problem on the roads it's the cars that cause the carnage.

We require licenses in NZ in order to compete. You cannot just show up at a race and sign in. You need to prove that you are a competent rider via a licensing scheme.

I have never heard of a car been written off after colliding with a bicycle so the issue of depreciation does not arise when it comes to collisions between cars and cyclists.

Cyclists are the most vulnerable users of the road and cars therefore need to take extra care around cyclists. In many countries this is written into the road code I hope Singapore does the same soon.

The cyclist is clearly visible so the motorist should slow down and let him pass before proceeding. It would only extend his travel time by about 3 seconds so it's really no big deal.

It will extend the cyclist's commute time by more than 10 seconds. He does not have the luxury of an engine to do the work for him.

In situations like this the more vulnerable user should have right of way.
