A drunk foreigner punched a 62-year-old taxi driver and pushed him to the ground. He continued to hit the driver until he knelt down. In the end, the driver suffered fractures to his face and fingers and had to undergo surgery. However, he escaped caning because he had just turned 50. Sentenced to 13 months in prison.
The defendant is British man Edge Mark Alan (Edge Mark Alan, 52), who faces one count of intentionally causing serious injury to another person.
According to the charge, the defendant injured a man, Tan Jianxing, at a taxi stand on Holland Road at around 11 pm on July 12, 2020. It was revealed in court that the victim was a 62-year-old taxi driver and the defendant was drunk at the time of the incident.
The defendant pleaded not guilty. After the trial of the case, the judge issued an oral ruling on Tuesday (December 19) and said that the defendant punched the victim for about five minutes. This process was captured on video by witnesses, although the video was only seven seconds long. However, it can be seen that the victim was beaten to the ground and the defendant still did not stop.
A woman present saw what happened and quickly called the police for help. The defendant continued to beat the victim, causing fractures to the victim's right eye frame and right little finger.
The prosecution stated that it believed the defendant should be sentenced to 15 to 18 months in prison and six strokes of the cane. However, since the defendant was over 50 years old, the prosecution requested that the defendant be jailed for an additional three months in lieu of caning.
The judge finally decided to sentence the defendant to 10 months in prison, plus three months in lieu of caning.
