Actually there is nothing wrong for general to become politician.
Leaders are born, not made. No amount of training and nurturing can create a leader. It only produce an manager.
Actually the argument should be that anyone including a fish monger can be politician
The pioneer batch of PAP ministars had fish mongers?

Leaders are born, not made. No amount of training and nurturing can create a leader. It only produce an manager. Leaders acts on intuition and reacts readily to new situations. Managers look for past solutions to tackle problem.
So much said, the current process can never find a great leader.
Based on your observations, do you honestly think that CNA (Chief Natural Aristocrat) is a leader? And is he a "great leader"?
Remember that Mee Siam Mai Hum was handpicked by Old Fart, who the latter thinks that has the qualities of a great leader.
Could a great leader like Old Fart have had made a mistake in his assessment of his anointed son?
Pertinently was Old Fart a great leader? The state-controlled media and the PAP propaganda machinery have over the past 50 plus years drilled into Sinkies that Old Fart was a great visionary.

Old man was a good leader, he had the good luck of having a team of honorable and capable men around him. His greatest mistake was his fear of losing power after he had acquired it. He forgot we are supposed to be a democracy. He forgot the country does not belong to him and his family alone. Hence, his survival and the survival of the PAP became paramount, regardless of how ensuring their survival could be destructive to the country.Ah Gong was a great leader.
Back in the 1950s, you would never have guessed that Ah Gong would be our founding PM. There was already a government in place. Later on, David Marshall took over. A few years later, most people expected Lim Chin Siong to be our prime minister.
A great politician has to have the ability to survive through tough times on his wits. Ah Gong has the ability to survive against the odds, the Brits, the Japs, the Brits again, the Commies and leading sinkies through the turbluent 60s against both domestic and regional threats. Sinkies who seem the world through their self righteous lens of black-and-white are deluded. They would probably have led Singapore into destruction.

To me, a good leader would put his personal concern last. Do you think he had achieved that?
