Hey people, I need your opinions on this issue. Can any teachers help? Thought of highlighting to MOE but was told they will reflect the matter to the school principal, which essentially meant nothing will be done.

How would you all feel if a teacher tore up your child's book, informing you the reason for doing so was that she wrote nonsense on its pages? But from what one can see, they are merely blank spaces in the workbook to be filled with some words . Regardless, a teacher shouldn't tear up the book of any student! Mind you, she ripped out 3 pages in front of the entire class.

This friend of mine is very upset and she had to change schools for her kid as the poor girl is too afraid attend class (@ Riverside Primary School that is ) due to the constant scolding she received from the teacher.

That poor girl is just a primary one student. Two months into the new term, she is still struggling to adjust to the environment; making friends, knowing her teachers.

Both the little girl's parents are working by the way, so the school is entrusted with caring for and educating the kid . The usually chirpy girl becomes very quiet when asked about matters related to the school and her teachers. Thinking it is normal for a child to evade such queries from time to time, the parents did not sense anything amiss.

Then the parents saw torn pages of the book after they were alerted by a neighbour who watches the child after official school hours. They thus went to school and asked the teacher (Mdm Yaty) to explain why she tore up the book.

Her reply was simply this : "She was writing nonsense on it. And I do this to other students too." So what exactly were the words written that you deemed as nonsense? The incorrect answers? Come on... you should offer a better reason.

Some teachers are tough and they do get results. I actually worry about lazy teachers who really cannot be bothered and by the end of the year, you find out your kid has screwed up education wise. I would monitor the situation and work with the kid and see if it indeed the kid and not the teacher that is at fault. Once you complain and or ask of change of class, all the teachers will know and they will let kid to wallow away.

Entrusting your kid to teachers without monitoring their progress is a bad idea

Know of a teacher who is the father of well known sports personality who starts each year by telling the students that if they are not interested, he will leave them alone on the understanding they don't cause trouble. Every year, it's the worst performing class. He can't be bothered as his wife is a Principal of another school and he does not need the money. And kids being kids think that he is cool and never complain to their parents.

When I was in primary school I received far worse abuse from the teachers than having one of my books torn up. If she wrote rubbish she deserves to be taken to task.

The parents should support such a teacher because she is obviously a dedicated teacher who demands high standards.

If one of her students deserves to have his/her homework turned to toast then the teacher has every right to take whatever measures are necessary to teach the student a lesson they won't forget in a hurry.

Children needed to me molded to become good citizens from a young age. If they go through their formative years believing that they can get away with sub standard work this attitude will continue into adulthood.

The declining standards in Singapore are proof that this already started happening a generation or so ago in the 80s. We need good teachers to stop the rot.

your comparison is not valid. based on your reasoning, children shall attend military school instead of normal civilian schools

You're being ridiculous. I'm not saying the children should be charging up hills and digging trenches.

All I'm saying is that strict discipline and consistent and stern dealings with sub standard work should be adhered to.

When I was in secondary school, one mother farker of a teacher said that my work was shit and slapped me with the exercise book. I asked him why he did that and he grabbed my shirt. I gave him a hard push and that farker lost his balance and fell down, scratching his arm against the table. For that I was given 3 days suspension and 3 strokes of the can. I swear that if I meet that bastard again outside now, I will do something nasty to him.

Sounds like the teacher is unable to control her temper and aggressiveness and took advantage of her authority over a little kid and terrorised her. Just too bad her victim was a puny primary school tot. Try that with a secondary schoolboy, and there may be instant retaliation by physical force. A teacher should be tactful and spur interest in the kid, not coerce them through fear. If the kid's parents were someone influential in society, the school would get sued! Causing mental trauma to students! To all teachers - if you wish to punish a student, let that kid be your own kid! Never ever punish someone else's kid! Touch my kid, I'll kill you!

Cheers!

The teacher was right. Your work is shit. From your posts I can tell that you didn't learn much in school.

I don't need the crap I learned in school to do well in life. At least I'm now a boss, with a handful of uni grads slaving for me. That mother farker is probably still a pathetic teacher in one of the schools.

You may be a boss but that does not make you a nice person. Your condescending tone shows that you have no care or respect for your fellow human beings.

People should not be measured based upon their wealth and their social standing.

I had a similar experience my math teacher threw 40 exercise books in my face for not doing my homework. He told me that I was fucking useless at maths and would definitely fail my O levels. He actually almost broke my neck. 40 exercise books adds up to a lot of weight.

I was determined to prove him wrong. I therefore put in extra effort and scored A1 in both general and add maths.

His name was Wee Moh Nam.

The point I am making is that we need teachers like that to challenge us to do better. Without these bastard teachers many students would not have made it in life.
