With Murali, that are a number of factors to be looked at. Not a drop of Chinese blood. Married to an Indian, no previous experience as an MP and standing in a single ward. The fact that he will win is a foregone conclusion but it also then undermines the undermines the entire concept of GRC except that it helps useless PAP candidates.

If pappies really put up a weak candidate proclaimed as a strong candidate, the real deal is to get CSJ into Parliament, demolish him there and the credibility of SDP is finished. He will be shut up for good. SDP will either collapse or a new leader will take over. So, CSJ's performance as MP in Parliament is vital to the survival of SDP.

Pappies are good for laying political mouse traps except that they are hopeless in catching the real rats lurking in the forest in Woodlands which ran the brothel for the ah nehs.

Old man was famous for whacking the grass to frighten off the snake.

When pappies first stood in post war election against pro-British parties in sinapo, pappies MP of all races in every ward, Malays in Chinese majority wards, Indians in Chinese majority wards and so on but all of them still got elected.

GRC is LKY's scheme to entrench pappies in power because after defeat by JBJ in Anson, he knew sinkies no longer loved pappies. So, how to fix it? GRC to screw oppo parties which found it very difficult to get good candidates and the rest is history about the so-called walk over phenomenon, which does not happen in all countries in the world except in sinkie land.

sinkies did not stop loving pappies....pappies were still well loved during Goh Chok Tong era.....it was only post 2000 did the country began sliding backwards and regressing into a state of slumland.goh chok tong was the golden era,a period of maintaining status quo would have been better than anything we are facing today.i think the biggest cancer was bringing arse loong into the equation, after 10 years of punishment and suffering and anal perforation from too many pinoy and bangala cocks up the ass,why sinkies continue to elect this clown into office is beyond me.misplaced loyalty?chemical lobotomy?utter removal of the frontal lobe?infiltration of virus into our water supply turning sinkies into lamebrains or the walking dead?

In fact in a crisis, voters will likely vote PAP as they are known to turn things around quicker. Voters actually turn to the opposition in better times as in 1991, 2011 etc. It also explains why the By Elections strategy works.

There is another aspect that is cause for concern. The PAP controls every aspect of society that has an influence on political outcomes. Their control is tighter than ever. During old man's era, he would proudly say that he needs to control the press, the unions and even Law Society. He was actually more transparent. The son however is not so articulate so finds it hard to defend his position so does his control very quietly. When a crisis occurs in the past, old man will come out fighting. Look at LHL, at every crisis he will hide out. The wife controls the economy and unlike the likes of Pillai and the other first generations PS, it is her interest to ensure politically they are exploited.

Yes, good point. 2001 election just after 9/11: PAP 75%. GCT must have been thinking he was the luckiest man alive (his final legacy as part of his final term in office).

I was thinking maybe a prolonged crisis will reveal the PAP has no more tricks up its sleeve and cause the people to abandon the idea that they can fix anything.

I think LHL is articulate, but he is a poor leader who does not lead from the front unlike his father. His father had to the guts to be the most unpopular guy on earth if that's what it took to make sure things went his way. LHL has wants to maintain a certain gentle and people-friendly image, so he let's other people take the fall in event of a crisis and only steps forward only when the rubble has settled. That's what in Chinese is called "MA HOU PAO".

What WP and LTK has been successful in doing is to market themselves to the apathetic voters and a build a good reputation. WP does it through the quality and character of their candidates like LTK, Sylvia, CSM, Pritam etc, party branding, and years of hard work on the ground connecting with apathetic voters.

SDP has good candidates like Dr Tambyah and Dr Chee, but they should emulate WP's model to work hard on the ground and connect with the apathetic voters which is one-third of the electorate.

.

Yes, SDP should definitely learn from the WP model.

The likes of Desmond and KJ are detrimental to the oppo as a whole. These folks belong to a by-gone era where people were so afraid of politics that only two kinds of people entered politics - the scholar elites entering the PAP camp, or lunatics, fuckwits and PAP agents entering the oppo camp. KJ is worse - he is new to the scene but behaves like a reincarnation of Harbans Singh.

It is interesting that Paul Thambyah in a recent speech endorsed Tan Jee Say and Tan Kin Lian as worthy Presidential candidates but did not mention Tan Cheng Bock. Interestingly SDP members attended TCB's recent open house and happily took pictures. Plus what you mentioned it will be interesting.

I do not believe that TKL and TJS are good candidates to be the elected President.
TJS may have better qualifications and experience.

If Murali wins, it would mean that LKY is wrong about the need for GRC to ensure the representation of minority races in Parliament as it would mean that the minority races can win on their own merits against the majority Chinese race in Singapore. Therefore, the rationale for GRC would be proven to be flawed.

Michael Palmer, an Eurasian had won in Punggol East before he had to resign because of a woman just like David Ong.

JBJ had also won in Anson before the introduction of the GRC in the GE.

Before the GRC concept was introduced, minority races had won in the GE.

agree absolutely.

they chose murali over others (chinese) because they are supremely confident csj wont win. if tambyah was contesting, a chinese from the pap would do battle. likely the secretary.

- there are currently no "burning issues" in BB or in Singapore
Does thick smog/haze caused by severe burning count? I understand it's going to be a perennial problem. 2015 was the worst on record. I don't know if 2016 will beat last year's. Anyway my family are now safe in the USA where there's NO smog, haze or whatever euphemism Sinkies employ.

Electors' names to be updated in registers in preparation for Bukit Batok by-election: Elections Department http://str.sg/Zv3f

In preparation for the by-election for Bukit Batok Constituency that will be held in due course, the Registration Officer, in accordance with section 13(5) of the Parliamentary Elections Act, will remove and transfer the names of electors to the appropriate registers of electors based on their NRIC addresses as on March 16, 2016, the Elections Department said in a press release on Monday (March 28).

The names will be removed and transferred on April 14. Before the changes are effected, the list of electors’ names to be removed or transferred will be available for inspection at the Elections Department, 11 Prinsep Link, Singapore 187949, for two weeks from March 29 to April 11.
Singaporeans can check their particulars in the registers of electors via the following channels:

- At community centres/clubs (with NRIC/passport);
- At Singapore overseas missions that serve as overseas registration centres (with NRIC/passport)*(see annex)*

- At the Elections Department (with NRIC/passport).
In the meantime, applications for non-voter restoration and overseas elector registration can continue to be submitted via the above channels.* However, should a Writ for by-election for Bukit Batok Constituency be issued, then non-voter restoration and overseas elector registration for Bukit Batok Constituency will be suspended until after the by-election.

Sinkies had better vote for Murali if they know what is good for them. Voting for opposition means a reduction in government grants for their town maintenance and closure of doors when dealing with government institutions. Post GE 2015, government agencies will more strongly enforce a cold working relationship with non-PAP politicians. Civil servants will make it clear that they prefer to work with the PAP grassroots and CCC advisors than an opposition MP whose loyalty to Singapore is dubious at best.

Typical "chao kuan" (aka bad upbringing) PAP and their supporters!

Just in case you do not already know, civil servants and the government agencies are paid by all tax-payers (they are not paid by the PAP, get this fact into your head, ok?)
and they are supposed to be non-partisan to any political party.
