Hehehe. Early 90s , I join wrong side. Joined the cina ktv side. Jacky and andy.
Wow didn't know Kurt Cobain visited Plaza Singapura.. Was a massive fan of Nirvana during school days.. They were the band of the 90s..
This pic must be during early 90s when Nirvana made their maiden trip to S'pore to promote their album.. I remember reading somewhere that Cobain was interested in doing a concert in S'pore but they wanted a big car park space to do that.. The gahmen didn't give the concert the green light due to many reasons..
RIP Cobain..
Actually Nirvana had a stop-over in Singapore on their way to Japan - they had yet to really explode on the world scene as Smells Like Teen Spirit single had just been released and was gaining rotation on MTV - the stopover was organized via Universal/Geffen group - there was a sizeable crowd at Changi waiting for them and they got mobbed - it was on their way to the hotel (I cant remember whether it was the Copthorne or Holiday Inn near Zouk) that Kurt asked whether they were actually performing in Singapore and was disappointed to know that it was a PR stopover and not a gig - so he said that they would play anywhere, even a carpark and if necessary to charge $1 for entry - they were here for 72 hours so even though Universal tried to apply for this, it was not enough time to get the license (Nirvana had landed around midnight on a Monday night). Other bands have also passed through in the 90s but on small scale - for eg hardcore/indie bands like Fugazi, the Rollins Band, Smashing Pumpkins and Sonic Youth....it was all organized by fans.....
Hehehe BigO magazine... I still remember this character called Francis Frightful from the local punk Opposition Party
Oh man I miss the 90s!
In my humble opinion, the legendary band who still churn out good stuff today is Radiohead..
REM, Red hot chilli pepper and U2 are still around but their sound has changed to more mainstream.
Sounds like our taste is quite similar... What are you listening to nowadays?

Many thanks for this interesting info.. Used to buy the local Bigo mag during schooldays before there was Internet.. Ian Mackay from Fugazi used to be from this punk outfit Minor Threat..

Plaza Sing then was Singapore's unofficial music hub. Yamaha (music school/classical and rock instruments retail/hi fi retail), Swee Lee (rock and classical instruments), Supreme Records, Tat Chuan (monster cables/tannoy speakers), Pertama and another entry level audiophile store selling NAD/Marantz (forgot the name) all under one roof. not to forget Yaohan also selling those Sony/Pioneer/Aiwa "hi fi sets" and mini combos highly popular back then.
...... I became an audiophile enthusiast..
My music taste for the last 8, 9 years now more into electro lounge, Lounge Jazz, world music, old Brazilian tracks remixed again by Gilles Peterson and all those chill out songs.. Thanks to the Internet, I get my fix from BBC radio 1..
RHCP are still performing......
