You remind me of the film "The last Emperor". While he remained cloistered in the forbidden city with his wet nurse, the rest of China was in upheaval but he was blissfully unaware of what was going on in his small sea of tranquility within the walls of the palace.

Singapore served its colonial masters well. However, the fact remains that for the rest of us, it was swampland and fishing villages. I used to ride my bike through the villages and catch fighting fish in the streams that drained into the swamps so I'm speaking from first hand experience.

Just in case you failed to realise, this argument started with your incorrect assertion that SG was a fishing village before LKY took power. SG as a whole was neither a fishing village nor an impoverished swamp in 1959. Sure there were fishing villages and swamps on Pulau Ujong (mainland SG) and there still are today in the outer islands. You can post zillions of pictures and cut and pastes from the net till you are blue in the face, it will not change the fact that SG as a whole was in 1959 the most industrialised country in SEA and 2nd richest in Asia on per capita GDP basis behind only Japan.

He inherited the infrastructure left behind but 95% of the country was swampland and fishing villages. He turned that 95% into an industrial powerhouse that transformed the country that was nothing more than a fishing village / swampland into to a first world nation.

For that I will always be extremely grateful to LKY. He has done wonders. Without him, Singapore would be nothing.

The end justifies the means. Thanks to LKY's wisdom and foresight, I landed an excellent job right after graduation and because demand for graduates was so high at the time, I doubled my salary in less than 2 years.

When I had learned enough about the industry I was in, I started my own enterprise with assistance from the EDB and JTC and made even more money.

All this is thanks to LKY and if had to lock up a few twits without trial in order to achieve progress, then it was entirely justifiable.
