Cantonese vs Vietnamese Language

For 1000 years Vietnam was under Chinese rule ( 200 BC to 900 AD). They were considered an integral part of China.....Anyone who practises Han culture is considered Han, as "Chinese-ness" is defined by culture, not only genetics. Thats why DNA studies reveals that Southern Chinese Genes are different from Northern Chinese genes. Southern Chinese are genetically closer to the Vietnamese than their Northern cousins....
In simple words - Cantonese people are actually a mix of Han and Yueh (Viet)......
We even share similar Surnames..... meaning we are all related if you trace our ancestry back far enough.......

The original inhabitants in northern Vietnam and the southern regions of China (today Guangxi, Guangdong & Fujian) are the Yue people. Han Chinese started to migrate south two thousand years ago escaping war, famine and the cold climate. The Han people intermixed with the natives giving rise to present day Southern Chinese race. Some native Yue moved up to live in the hills and become the tribal people of Miao, Zhuang and other minorities. The Vietnamese managed to retain their identity and pure Yue ancestry while the Southern Chinese are actually a people of mix Han/Yue stock. Finally only people living in north and central China can be considered to be of pure Han stock.

few people are of pure Han stock. the Northern people intermixed with the nomads from North of the Great Wall, and the Northern and Central people intermixed greatly. why are people obsessed with pure Han stock and closest dialect to ancient Chinese dialects anyway ?

from a non-cantonese speaker, I agree that Cantonese and Vietnamese sound the same.

a new language/dialect is difficult to learn. But you can basically understand and speak the language by just listening to people speak it everyday and alternatively you might not understand let alone speak a language if you try learning it the classroom way.

My parents speak Hokkien and I understand and speak Hokkien despite my parents never speaking a word of the dialect to me. You just pick up the language naturally when u heard peoples speak it everyday.

The dialect spoken in Wuxi sound much like Shanghainese but it is not same. Ditto Shanghainese vs Hangzhou lingo.......must go further back into history to sort out the roots.

Every language has borrowed from other languages they have come into contact with. In fact, that is often what keeps the language alive, because it is in constant use and it evolves.

On that note, English has borrowed more words from other languages than probably any other language. I'll just give one or two examples from a sample of languages:

• from French - liaison, rationale
• from Dutch - yacht
• from Tagalog - boondocks
• from Hindi - bungalow, juggernaut
• from Chinese - sampan
• from Malay - amok
• and much more.

One clue as to the multiple borrowings (and origins of the English lexicon) is in the occurrence of several words to mean roughly the same thing, e.g. a big celebratory meal can be a feast (Latin festa) or banquet (French).

So Malay is by no means unusual to have borrowed and indeed this active borrowing is an indication of its adaptability.

They probably had different words or phrases for it but dropped those in favour of 'seks'. Also, 'seks' might not have come from English. Previous European influences could have included the Spanish and Portuguese (both 'sexo'). The English word 'sex' probably came via the Spanish too.

depending on the context (for example if it's not about the type of gender), it has always been "puki" in my malay vocab. :o

can be, but mar-yin became associated more with hantam bola and kongkek was not appropriate esp on Fridays when putting on the songkek (sayang, nak songkek while undressed and before putting on the sarong may be heard differently) so it was replaced by the more hospitable Masuk (mari masuk = welcum).
