NUS takes disciplinary action against sex blogger

04:45 AM Nov 08, 2012

SINGAPORE - The National University of Singapore (NUS) said yesterday it is taking disciplinary action against law scholar and sex blogger Alvin Tan Jye Yee, but did not specify the nature of the punishment.

In a statement to the media, the university said its Board of Discipline (BOD) had reviewed the matter and "concluded that Alvin's inappropriate conduct was detrimental to the reputation and dignity of the university".

"After considering the seriousness of the offence, Alvin's account presented to the BOD and all mitigating factors, the BOD had decided on the disciplinary actions to be taken," said the NUS, describing Mr Tan's posts as "offensive". He has been informed about the decision, it added.

Pressed on the nature of the punishment, NUS said: "All matters relating to NUS disciplinary proceedings are confidential."

Attempts to reach Mr Tan were unsuccessful as his mobile phone was switched off.

Last month, Mr Tan and his girlfriend made headlines after they posted explicit videos and pictures of themselves on his blog. Last week, he met the BOD and apologised for affecting the university's reputation.

In March, Mr Sun Xu, an undergraduate scholarship holder from China who made derogatory comments about Singapore, was fined S$3,000 by the board, reprimanded and ordered to perform three months of community service before he was allowed to graduate.

The decision was disseminated in a university circular.

EX-NUS SCHOLARSHIP PANEL MEMBER'S VIEW
Today's recipients are less grateful
*

I FOUND the behaviour of National University of Singapore (NUS) scholarship holder Alvin Tan Jye Yee upsetting ("Sex blogger's 'crazy' act"; Oct 25).
The main reason for such increasingly common examples of boorish behaviour may have to do with changes in the selection criteria.
Some 50 years ago, there were few scholarships, and winning one was not based solely on grades.
The applicant's financial need was also an important factor.
So, most recipients were students from poor families, for whom the scholarship was a lifeline to complete their education and obtain their degree.
They were grateful for the award and were glad to serve society after their graduation.
But some 20 years ago, I was surprised to learn, while serving on the NUS scholarship committee, that an applicant's financial need was no longer considered in the awarding of a scholarship.
The needy students could apply for bursaries.
So, many scholarships were awarded to students from well-to-do families.
To some of these students, the scholarships offered were like an allowance, and they did not feel that they owed society anything.
If the scholarships had been offered to good students from poor families, the lifeline would spur them to repay the debt to society.

why NUS must be so holy?

they dun even teach religion in schools.

or NUS wants to play daddy and discipline someone else sons and daughters?

got so much free time? while students are so busy studying.

typical asian mentality always want to kaypoh other people private business.

when their own parents dun even give a cow dung.

Most Malaysian Chinese are ugly and Alvin despite his intelligence, is no exception. His girlfriend looks like a demonic bitch too.

Well, if I ran things in NUS I'd give him an extra special punishment because of his ugly face but of course for the sake of appearances I can't cite this as an official reason.

NUS handled the matter badly tp say the least. They should be specific of the punishment and put a rest to the matter. Confidential? What is there to hide on this matter?

Such as composition of the Board of Discipline?

2 scenarios :

a) Alvin Tan was sacked . Period.

or

b) Alvin Tan 's remaining scholarship
withdrawn but allow to complete his degree .

Punishment too light, that's why cannot see light. Probably includes allowing him to keep scholarship money

If the action was not expulsion then there is something seriously wrong.
Not only that, the precedent that would be set would be mind-boggling.
