Dear fellow citizens,

I am writing this article as I am really very annoyed with the way our very ‘capable’ Singapore Police Force (SPF) works.
I used to be a police officer myself from 2005 to 2011.

I got myself injured during the course of my work. I am appreciative that my entire medical fees and treatment was borne by the organization. However, the injury was quite severe upon an assessment by MRI that I was barred from IPPT and was transferred to a desk-bound position as any injury to my back will cause me to be paralysed.

Recently, I received a letter from SPF notifying me to attend IPPT. I am amazed that I receive this letter to take my IPPT as I have not taken my IPPT since the official debarment took place in the year 2007. I decided to write an email to the sender of the letter to me on 24[SUP]th[/SUP] August 2012. I did not receive any acknowledgement of the email or any reply for this email. I decided to take another step by calling up the department. Calls to the person who sent the email was fruitless as the line is always busy. I decided to call another number that is linked to a W/SGT(Women Sergeant).

I was able to speak to this W/SGT. However I was amazed at the way she handled my call. She seems to be unaware on what is going on within the SPF. I explain to her my whole situation about how my injury was certified by the Home Team Medical Board. Her reply was that she was not sure what Home Team Medical Board is or if she ever heard of it. This is surprising as during my time in SPF, there was a circular being given out to inform all officers that once they are barred from IPPT, they had to attend this medical board. Another surprising find was that I was still categorized as PES A despite official review by this Home Team Medical Board. Upon further queries, she told me that she would check and revert within 1 week.

I decided to probe further by calling the unit that I was previously attached to. I checked and found out that my official file has been forwarded to the relevant NSmen department upon my last day in service. The officer-in–charge told me I could check further on my status with the NS record department. I called up the NS record department and got further update on my reservist status. They inform me that there was no record for me as I was a former regular officer and that I have to check with another department that handles officers that resigned from the force. A call to the department brought about a wonderful discovery. It seems that my medical status was never updated there either. According to the officer who spoke to me, medical status can only be confirmed with CMPB (Central Manpower Base) or HTA (Home Team Academy) medical review. Therefore, I decided to question him what is the Home Team Medical Board for, since its decision of a police officer medical status is not valid. The officer was not able to commit to an answer. Another question that I have for him was as to whether I am still required to attend the IPPT. The answer he gave was a blatant “YES”. Upon further probing, the officer decided that he cannot make further decision and will check with his superior and will get back to me by the end of the day. However, he has yet to get back to me.

So now I am wondering if I am supposed to attend the IPPT session even though I am fully barred and risk being paralysed. I know without a doubt that I will never get a reply from SPF regardless the amount of email I write or the amount of calls I made.

All I have left to say to the officers handling my case is a big fat ‘WELL DONE’ for having caused me such distress.

Best regards,

Another Singapore citizen

My Advice To The Inured Officer

Young Man, I truly emphatise with you. I know how you feel........
From what you wrote it appears that you were injured IN THE COURSE OF DUTY.
You are thereby covered by the Workmen's Compensation Act.............
You have to find this out yourself..........so sorry...
You had been assigned "desk duties" or light duties to be exact.
Am I correct????????
How long was this for????????
Why did you resign as a Regular?????

FYI, the SPF has since time immemorial been very concerned about the welfare and well-being of any injured officer and their families.
The SPF has special schemes for such officers.
The SPF Welfare Division also has special schemes for the benefit of the family of their injured compatriots.

What the Women Sgt and the others did is not relective of the entire SPF.
Those are individuals. "Victims" of erratic promotions.
If they acted "blur" or appeared "inefficient" or lost, it is their own state of mind.
They are truly unproffessional and sincerely unbecoming as police officers...
Their actions should not be attributed as an act "sanctioned" by the Force.
Those who promoted these people (for whatever reasons) would today be definitely regretting for their "follies".

I symphatise with you for all the problems and wish you a speedy recovery.
Please rest assured that the SPF will never forget you.
Please Do Not blame the entire SPF for the faults of a few "day-dreamers" and annual "rank-receipients".
Let's not forget the fact that some people are "wrongly promoted".
Sadly, many able ones are denied a rise in heirachy.

The olden days policemen from Malacca (orang-lama) attributed promotions of worthless and underserving officers as practicioners of BBC or Bodek, Bedek, Cherdek

You like many past policemen, dead or still living, are the true and loyal officers, albeit forgotten or left out.
Victims of "office politics".

The Police Force if you read their media releases cannoy accomplish anything unless they do entensve and protracted investigations. Even a simple theft of bicycles and handphones will always be accompanied by those comments.

Since you sent the letter last week, i would suggest a reasonable time to allow extensive and protracted investigations to be done.

Bro, what happenned? First you say that SPF is ok and then you talk aout those are that wrongly promoted, office politics, etc.

Reminds me of a transfer attempt by a head of department who wrote all the flaws and issues and then concluded that the staff is ok and will be an asset to the new dept.

One year at least the wait instead of shorter, since the person complained publicly now.

I recall an incident whereby an investigator was incarcerated for 6 months and yet months after his release, performed reservist duties IN THE SAME POLICE DIVISION. It was later ascertained, after 'extensive and protracted investigation", that Manpower Dept did not update its records. Sibeh embarrassing.

i know it can be emo over such issue, pls dont take it too hard.
if not fit and mati mati want you to go. go and register on the day for ippt and declare unfit on the spot, then go have breakfast and lim kopi loh. dont even do a single station. they also cannot say anything.

even with millions spent on the most advanced cloud computing system, an it or hr organization will fail without the following four fundamental features: fail-proof process, follow-thru, feedback, fidelity (accuracy).

".

The Work Injury Compensation Act covers all employees in general, who are engaged under a contract of service or apprenticeship, regardless of their level of earnings.

Self-employed persons, independent contractors, domestic workers, members of the Singapore Armed Forces, officers of the Singapore Police Force, the Singapore Civil Defence Force, the Central Narcotics Bureau and the Singapore Prisons Service are not covered under the Work Injury Compensation Act.

the fella's a reservist now...

as we know, reservist admin matters are handled by ns boys.....

whether saf, spf or cd its just a room full of boys putting in minimum effort with eyes on the clock.

nothing new

Mr Scroobal,

The SPF is an organisation (like a foundation) that cannot be blamed.

It is those few that run these organisation according to their own whims and fancies that are to be faulted.

They promote their cronies and yes-men (women included)

More often than not many good officers are left in the lurch.

Some resign, others "hentak-kaki" till they are retired.

The British police officers in Singapore were doing right in administration and welfare.

World of a difference today.
