I grew up in a middle-class family. Though theywere well-off, my parentstrained my brothers andme to be frugal fromyoung.We had to turn off water taps completely. If myparents found a drippingtap, we would get a tickingoff. And when we left a room, we had to switch off lights and air-conditioners.


My father's frugality extends beyond lights and air-conditioners.When he travelled abroad, he would wash his own underwear, or my motherdid so when she was alive. He would complain that the cost of laundry at five-star hotels was so high he could buy new underwear for the price of thelaundry service.


One day in 2003, the elastic band on my father's old running shorts gave way.My mother had mended that pair of shorts many times before, so my fatherasked her to change the band.

But my mother had just had a stroke and her vision was impaired. So she told my father: "If you want me to prove my love for you, I will try. "I quickly intervened to say: "My secretary's mother can sew very well. I will ask her to do it. "My parents and I prefer things we are used to.

For instance, the house we have livedin all my life is more than 100 years old. When we first employed a contractor-cum-housekeeper, Mr Teow Seng Hua, more than 10 years ago, he asked me: "Your father has worked so hard for so many years. Why doesn't he enjoy some luxuries?"

that is called stingy. many loaded ppl are like that. they want to earned every pennies possible yet unwilling to spend a dime. A loaded uncle come to mind, make plenty from insurance but never once treat a meal to relatives yet will attend every makan gathering organised by relatives.

MM Lee is indeed a very frugal politican,I fully agree.
But I should also mention that President Ma Ying-jeou of Taiwan is even more fugal than him,the point that I like is that President Ma gets a much lower salary of about $200,000 per annum and practices liberal democracy in Taiwan though he came from a dictatorial groudground.

This another misleading article. Mum and Dad had colossal property rented out to expats near Botanic Gardens. Many politicians do that to get votes but their family does not write articles like this. If they did, the press, other politicians, property agents etc who are in the know would be savaging the families to no end. That is why SPH control is their crucial for them.

We all know how the Police Volvo is more expensive then LHL's Honda etc. These are meant for ignorant donkeys who still cannot make the connection why Marion Jones was stripped of all her medals despite having tested negative to everyone of her 26 urine tests. For the even more blur, she passed every single one of her urine tests. And at the time, WADA, USDA, Etc all claimed that they had state of the arts labs. The saddest part is that her relay team mates who worked hard lost theirs as well. Till today they do not have a positive test from her.
