Who to support? karang guni man or recycle company?

those living in hdb flats now have frequent visits from a recycling company which distribute plastic bags for residents to dispose their unwanted items such as newspapers, plastic/glass bottles, old clothings n etc.

on the other hand, the traditional karang guni man also goes door to door to collect such unwanted items.

here's the catch. karang guni PAYS u some small money token for ur unwanted items while the big recycling company just disposes all that without giving u a single cents.

now who should we support? the karang guni man or the big recycling company?

a young and very courteous karang guni guy just collected some old newspaper. it was a small stack and he paid my mum $1.50. she was so happy, she cleared all her old clothings to him, old handphones and etc....and well, she was happy with the amount the cute young fella paid her:biggrin:

she has made a pledge. for the survival sake of karang guni profession, she shall henceforth sell all unwanted household items to them.

she gets nothing from the recycling company. ABSOLUTELY NOTHING FOR SO MANY YEARS!!

there used to be a toothless old ah pek karang guni who came quite often. due to the intrusion and invasion of BIG recyle company, this poor bachelor ah pek wasn't seen any more.

if he had been forced into extinction by such BIG recyle compay who pays NOTHING for all your unwanted items, then it would be a real tragedy!

so people, i hope this thread would make u aware of the livelihood of the karang guni people who are also an icon in our hdbs.

shall we start a campaign and called it:

SAVE OUR KARANG GUNI UNCLES & AUNTIES

Then support the small timer . And give him back the money for the hard work .

$1.50 can't buy us shit these days ?

I rather let the rag and bone man keep the $1.50 than pay for a cup of over priced coffee .

it's their ethic of the trade. buy unwanted household items, then re-sell it. they make some money and they also make many house aunties very pleased for ridding their unwanted items in exchange for small cash tokens.

karang guni profession has been around for a very long time in sgp. now it seems that they are facing undue extinction by the appearnce of big recyle firms. and these firms do not pay anything in exchange for unwanted items.

cans and cardboards picking aunties and uncles are also somewhat very small time karang guni "professionals".

these are the people we must also support. they don't beg for your money. they only want ur empty soda can or discarded newspaper so that they can sell them for some livelihood expenses.

so think about your stacks of newspapers that u were about to give away to the big recycle company. that stack could be a lifeline of karang guni.

Same here, I will rather give business to the garang guni man at the door, for the junk I have, even I know the 'dachang' is inaccurate; his prices are fantastically low...to support small time business.

If I can't sell to the garang guni people, I thrash what I will throw to the refuse centre..I won't give to the recyclers...unless they give me rebates for the rates I pay..rebates I mean good rebates.

As for the over price coffee...why are we paying rates??? to watch TV...and the 'fark U'...tell us ( you), we should explore other ways of iLLEGALLY watch 2010 world cup...

For me the choice is very clear-I will support whoever is local.
If the karang guni man is local-I will definitely give my barang barang to him.
But if karang guni man is foreigner-esp PRC, I will give it to company provided worker is local.
If both are foreigners- I will throw the things at the rubbish collection centre myself-at least the cleaners in the estate get to make use of or sell them.

I don't like karang guni man to be around HDB estate as they're a nuisance. They will park their lorry at the carpark, and will start screaming "karang guni, gu pochua gu lay liao etc..", and the worst part is they carry that stupid horn that looks like a trumpet as if they have a license to cause noise pollution. I don't mind if they come in the afternoon, but the problem is they always appear at 9 am on Sunday when I'm still sleeping.

catchphrase here is RECYCLE.

if recycling brings in small tokens of income, it would be better than no income.

so it's income to the house aunties/uncles, income to the karang guni aunties/uncles and income to soda can/cardboard aunties and uncles - and everyone is happy.

but if given FREE to BIG recyle company, only they happy making money from junks.

this is called wise recycling.

i used to have prc karang guni ge ges ( yes not one but a whole gang of them) at my door step. i sold my condemned pc to them at $50 which is a price so much higher than selling to 2nd hand pc shops.

they are a friendly lot. we became pals and they even helped to clear junks from the temple. surprisingly, very nice and generous people. beside paying well for those junks, they made some extra donations into the donation box. the old spinster girls who were denizens at the temple loved them as though they were their sons.

too bad they had all gone back to xiamen. but they gave me their home addresses and invited me to visit them if i ever go there.
