We are not that old. The late 70s and 80s were a time where TV shows and pop music were of a very high standard as compared to today.

At that time, Taiwan was still until Martial Law (I think) cos of tension with Mainland China and under heavy censorship controlled by the KMT gov. They were not allowed violence and sword fighting scenes limited to a few mins allocation for certain hours show or something like that. That is why they always talk and pull sword halfway then put back when someone comes along to stop them. Limited sword fighting scene allowed by the KMT at that time. That's why gov control censorship fucked up creativity.

my father used to tell me this with laughs. exactly like you described - "they always talk and pull sword halfway then put back..." but my father never explained to me the KMT censorship. he said they too lazy to have the fighting scenes, weird script...

I especially love 周伯通 played wonderfully by the fatso actor 秦煌 instead of the young 黎耀祥 acting old and cute in the latter version. Totally din buy that.
