1m "No' to PAP
Dear Temasek Review readers

As of 19 Oct 2010, the flag statistics for Temasek Review has surpassed the 500 000 mark. The General Election is coming soon and voters must be careful about voting choices. The ruling People’s Action Party (PAP) regime has been very open about its policies and has rejected any suggestions for significant adjustments. Marginalized Singapore voters face a reality where the PAP may not care about them.

The PAP critics wish for an end to PAP dominance. However, they disagree on a realistic outcome. I have a suggestion based on a few assumptions. The first is the 500 000 Temasek Review readers are Singapore citizens with voting rights. The second is there are no spoilt votes and no walkover constituencies. If each reader votes against the PAP while being able to convince a voting non-reader to do the same, there will be 1 million votes against the PAP.

1 million votes out of a total electorate of 2.2 million based on the election department figures will constitute 45 % of the popular vote. This will affect the PAP in 2 ways. Firstly, redrawing electoral boundaries to disperse concentrations of opposition support will have no use as these concentrations exist in all constituencies. Secondly, the PAP will lose its 2/3 parliamentary majority. This is needed in order to push the PAP regime to change its current policies.

Some critics are worried the number of PAP core loyalists. There is not much the critics can do about these loyalists. It is precisely because of them that the critics must vote against and nothing else. Every vote from the critics is important as they must do their utmost to prevent a strong or overwhelming PAP victory.

Some may ask what the opposition can do if elected. They may not be able to do much as the PAP is still in power. The paramount importance is to show that the people can think beyond the PAP. Do PAP supporters really asked what the PAP candidates can do for them once elected? These supporters do not ask questions so long the candidate wears white, displays the PAP lightning badge and is approved by Minister Mentor Lee Kuan Yew.

The socio-economic problems caused the PAP regime’s policies have strategic consequences. The pro-PAP mainstream media has acknowledged a rise in strict religious interest due to economic pressures. Religious political movements may gain a critical mass as it has happened in the Middle East. The PAP regime has no solution to theocratic forces. A secular liberal opposition is needed for voters to examine policies rationally and to maintain communal harmony.

1 million direct votes. 45% of the popular vote. 1/3 of parliamentary seats. The critics simply need a bit more courage at the polling stations and the targets can be achieved.
