use of cheap labours to compete?

let's try this, find cheap labour to stand for election, MP for Your GRC?

He takes 1/2 the party takes half of his pay. Sure the party will do well and can start a new airline and compete with SIA.

All these just proved that singapore's government runs the country better than Australia's. Everyone living in Singapore should count their blessings for such good governance. For the poor losers here, your criticisms online will not affect the majority much as they are grateful enough to the PAP for the good lives they have here. Singapore should be known as the lucky country under PAP's wise leadership.

Singapore Airlines is one of those proposed foreign investors to buy Qantas. We should all proud that our country's so rich and buying instead of selling assets.

Another way to look at it is that companies like SIA & Emirates are exploiting cheap labor from the 3rd world. Isn't that what the PAP is doing by importing millions of cheap labor:confused:
I think the practise is known as wage dumping.

The world economy is now globalised. A country cannot live by its own rules and its own wage structure anymore.

Enterprises have to either adapt or go bankrupt. The current state of Qantas is a stark example of what high overheads brought about by over generous wage policies and inflexible unions.

Another example of how a wage structure created by legislation and overriding market forces will not work.

General Motors is widely rumoured to be pulling out of Australia by 2016, regardless of any Govt assistance plan.</figcaption>
General Motors is set to shut its government-supported Australian car making operation in 2016, potentially putting an end to the 50,000-job vehicle assembly industry, local media reports said.

The ABC said GM's Holden was in discussions with the government over its future but that unnamed senior government ministers had told the broadcaster that it would cease production as early as 2016.

Industry Minister Ian Macfarlane and Opposition Industry spokesman Kim Carr issued statements denying a decision has been made. Macfarlane met with Holden on Thursday and said talks were continuing, the ABC said.

The speculation came as Australia's productivity commission continued an inquiry into the future of the car industry that is expected to determine Holden's future after key competitor, Ford, announced in May its plan to stop its Australian manufacturing by 2016 with the loss of 1200 jobs.

If the commission recommends against ongoing funding, Holden is likely to follow Ford and close its assembly facilities, the ABC said. A final report is due on March 31.

Holden said its discussions with the Government were continuing, and it did not respond to speculation. Industry Minister Ian Macfarlane said he has spoken to Holden and they have denied the reports.

Research released last month suggested that Holden's closure would cost the South Australian economy $1.24 billion and 13,200 jobs alone. Australian unemployment is currently running at 5.7 per cent.

The Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries says the industry directly employs more than 45,000 people across the country.
The Australian Manufacturing Workers Union says Toyota would be likely to follow suit, meaning the end of the Australian automotive industry.

In that proves to be the case, up to 50,000 jobs could be lost across the country, with second and-third tier suppliers also forced to close their operations, the ABC said.

Ford's exit had long been expected after 20 years of declining fortunes for the industry. Early this year, Ford Australia president Bob Graziano blamed the high Australian dollar, rising costs and "one of the most competitive and crowded automotive markets in the world" for the decision to end local production. He said costs in Australia were twice those of Europe and four times those of Asia. Toyota - the only other Australian vehicle manufacturer - is widely expected to close its lines within the next few years.

Welcome to the real world. When it comes to the crunch, people take care of themselves and their cronies. It has been like that since the dawn of mankind. If you had to confront a crisis, you'd be behave exactly the same way.

Accept the fact that you can't change human nature and work the system to your advantage. Nobody owes anyone a living.

The objective of establishing an regional airline hub in Asia is fiercely competitive. Changi, KLIA, Chek Lap Kok (HK) are all vying to be the Asian hub for many of the world's carriers.

I guess Qantas' strategy in moving its operational hub to Dubai was to leverage off Emirates extensive network of routes in the Middle East and Europe whilst allowing them greater accessibilty to OZ and NZ routes through code share. It will be interesting to see how this partnership turns out for Qantas but with Alan Joyce in charge, I'm not optimistic.

Personally, if I were travelling between Europe and Oz, I'd rather break my journey in Asia than in the Middle East, in fact most European carriers still break their journeys in Asian cities before flying on to Oz.

In this instance, the leverage could have worked against Qantas. The routes are very competitive, referring to the network between ME and Europe. not only do they have to contend with the ME airlines, they would also have to take on the European airlines too. Very tough competition.

SIA should stay away from investing in Qantas, even if the Australian government were to relax on the restriction for foreign ownership. Qantas is a national carrier, today they can relax the rules to allow foreign ownership, the next time they can change it again, citing national concerns and you are stuck after putting in the money.

The only reason I can think of for SIA to invest in is they have been trying to get rights to fly North America via Australia. Which I think, is a little overstated.

This is what happens when you shift your Asian hub to Dubai and link up with Emirates.
No guesses as to who is the winner in this partnership.

This is where you are wrong.
Qantas was bleeding badly from the international routes because its costs are too high. It has no choice but to link up with Emirates and have Emirates operate their aircrafts (like a wet lease)

This Qantas problem arises from the domestic routes that it used to dominate. In the competition with newly revived Virgin/Tigerair, it was left with too much capacities.

Moreover, the TWU union is too strong. Tony Sheldon is also the Labor Party VP. These people are dinosaurs living in the pre-globalised world.

Singapore is not that stupid to be invaded. We have great strategists in our midst and we will control our country our way and protect our way of life. There is no way anyone can come in invited and take over our country. We are too smart for such a cunning move. We are Singaporeans - one country, one people, one nation and we are all united .Majulah Singapura!!!

You twit. You little island has already been invaded. You are a minority in your own country. Indeed, for employed adults, foreigners are already more than citizens. Only your garberment will never let you have the statistics to confirm the state of affairs. Poor twit.

ah leong, aussie car industry woes are not cause by high wages, it the strong aussie dollar that is killing the industry as import are far far cheaper than local products.
