The lack of fire ( and brimstone) has been mentioned of PT. It is considered an essential tool in politics and something that he has to pick-up to get that edge.

You want fire and brimstone? I can't find no greater example....LOL

Good points. No fear of race being a factor becos the PAP side is also an India..

In sinkie land politics, race has never been a factor. In the old days in 1950s, pappies Indian or Malay candidates in Chinese majority areas still got elected and this holds true to the present day. The racial harmony in sinkie land is strong but as for the new foreign newcomers, like the pinoys, tiongs, ah nehs, vietcongs, they are seen as outsiders parachuted into the country to grab power and money. Putting them up as candidates is a big mistake.

That foreign ah neh who tried it in last GE got burnt and lost his deposit. If he tried it again in BB, he would lost his pant.

History is always a factor in any contest. Its is the reason why the tea party and assessments are done of candidates in any political contest by established political parties despite having good qualifications. It becomes a gamble if not handled properly. The reaction to the US University incident was palpable locally.

Yes, I agree that Paul would have been a very strong candidate for the Bukit Batok knowing his excellent credentials and for one not having poor track records.

This just goes to show that so-called "leaders" cannot really give up their own interest and think of the party's interest instead. I could not support Chee purely because he was going for the support of "foreigners" instead getting local voters to fight. He should have just shown our local voters that he was worthy of their support and that he had his own abilities and could be responsible as well. Going to the US university to tackle Goh was the last straw for me. Not that I think much of GCT, but do not show our own dirty linens abroad.
No doubt he seems to have changed somewhat, but I still have the lingering thoughts.

Name me one good Indian politician in Singapore's history past and present other than S. Thamby Rajaratnam who did not turn out to be a fucking bastard? Don't include JBJ. He was a noble fool.

A noble fool but he got the guts to challenge LKY in Parliament. Who else did it?

race has always been a factor. otherwise dhnabalan would have been PM seat warmer long ago.

BB has been pre-dominantly chinese kampung/ enclave. Electability is not the issue about race, it is about how best the politicians can convey fear to the voters and how they can help voters to adapt to the fear and overcome it. FAP has a bigger machinery to do this from BB and outside BB which is why WP and SPP decides it is not worth to try their luck.

CSJ will be a better bet for SDP and when I saw how FAP send in chinese glass loot leaders to help out the ah Neh candidate to touch base with voters, i think it speak volumes. I dont think ahNeh is taking to BB like a fish to water as the son of BB. CSJ can converse in dialect and if he hits the right topic, he has a good chance to win.

I look forward to seeing Dr Chee in Parliament, that would be a refresher for all.

he can be a nobel laureate but chances are still slim. its a political gambit, sex appeal and a list of accodale or credentials or even being the son of ex politicians means nothing to voters. nicole seah in her own way has managed to touch on voters because of her ability to relate to voters, talking to them, assuring them.

Kinda like that other candidate…

Dr. Ben Carson

The similarities there are staggering….except PT probably never stabbed his school friend and hit his belt buckle instead.

Singaporeans like any other voter anywhere in the World will vote for the candidate that they think can deliver. The nuances that bring in the marginal votes are related to religion, race, ideology , affiliations. etc.

So any opposition candidate that hopes to get a seat must firstly have some credentials that can be validated by the voter. Secondly no adverse history and past conduct or it will a yoke around the candidate's neck and weigh him down. If the opposition political candidate starts off at a disadvantage, the attentions is switched to the PAP and the assessment begins. All the PAP candidate has to do is not be controversial and treat the voter with respect and the vote is in the bag.

Paul Thambyah has not only excellent credentials, his parents are also well known and well respected for the work that they have done and their humility. Paul has excelled in his vocation and has won multiple awards for being an excellent lecturer. He has also served with Mindef on overseas missions. However more importantly he has the balls to speak his mind at an opposition rally at the risk of being marginalised and ostracised by his employers. He also holds the distinction of being the first person linked to the government related body to speak at an opposition rally. He did this in 2011.

In 2012, Paul Thambyah was promoted to full Professor and granted tenure.

In essence in a straight fight in an SMC it will hard to overcome the solid credentials and the personal attributes of Professor Thambyah who is familiar with the voters since 2011. As this contest is in an SMC, there are no potential baggage nor poor credentials of fellow party members to drag this star down. And lastly as this is a by election, and a government in place, the voters need not worry about anything else but to vote in the best candidate and not necessarily a PAP.

Even a not well educated voter in Bukit Batok will see Thamyah for what he is and a full professor at that.

The PAP is notorious for various nefarious tactics when it comes to securing a vote. I cannot see how they can overcome Paul Thambyah.

Sadly it was not to be.

Couldn't agree more. CSJ needs to give up his dream of entering parliament and concentrate on getting the SDP a foothold. The PAP will use everything they have and does is no good in being a martyr over and over. PT is a great candidate for an SMC. The SDP is the only opposition party with a complete vision. But they need to start somewhere.

Race still matters. Chin3se will vote any PAP candidate of any race becauae PAP is predominantly chinese.
