SINGAPORE - In this statement, Mr Ngiam retracted his earlier charge that today's ministers are afraid of speaking up in Cabinet because of their high salaries, saying it was "illogical" and unfair. He also said that ministers are not elitist, as he had spoken without realising many in fact come from humble backgrounds.

Got humtum by the PAP ...what to do, have to backtrack lor.

The goal has been achieved. You can't win a full scale war with the PAP, so must use guerilla tactics.

Coming from a humble background is not necessarily the antidote to elitism. In fact, many of those who come from a humble background are often more elitist when they're doing well, because they want to 'blot out' their humble history. They end up doing lots of elitist stuff to overcompensate for that.

This Ngiam fellow must have been warned or threatened from behind the scenes, causing his balls to shrink.

The withdrawal of the statement looks worse for the PAP. Everyone will think pressure was applied. That Ministers cannot take criticism. But things said cannot be unsaid. Worse if it resonates with widely-held sentiments.

He and a few others have shown the way. Getting media coverage is the first step in reaching out to fencesitters in the PAP camp.

My parents once asked me: what is Hylam old men's favourite past time?

Answer: Sit around in kopishop the whole day and 论国家大事

If Uncle Ngiam has any gumption, this will not stop him from sharing his critical views about the establishment. If not, he'll be rated as another kopishop uncle at Purvis street.

This week 2 people backed down in the face of the Establishment. First, that 21yo student blogger, now stuck with a legal bill of $10,775 and who has put out the begging bowl asking people to defray her costs; and, second, this Ngiam fellow who does not simply issue a clarification of his remarks but a total retraction and repudiation of those remarks.
