Never stop the natural flow of our Singapore river yet they go ahead to build the Marina Barrage, thinking that it will neutralize the problem by having the Singapore Flyer, moving round and round but not continuously as they are close at night. Flood, MRT break downs, economy slow down all related to this?

Remember why we have this $1 dollar coin? If you aren't blind or have problems identifying shapes, you should be able to see that the coin is actually in an Octagon shape. In the chinese beliefs, it is also the shape of a Bagua

Myth/Story One: As you've noticed, our MRTs are mostly underground compared to other countries since they've got enough land space to build tracks whereas we don't have as much as them. Underground, associated to Hell obviously. Thus, disturbing the sprits etc so it's bad for the nation & people (travelling via MRT since they are like passing "hell": or something). Therefore,to ward them off, the best way is to use the Bagua. However, our leader obviously can't go around saying :"Hey! Everyone put a Bagua infront of your house Yeah! Ward of Evils!". Obviously not everyone would do that since it sounds senseless and we've got ppl from other races who won't buy that story. So,to save us from the evil, the coin is thus introduced into that shape.

Myth/Story Two(I googled it!): MRTs tunnels and the huge amount of metal being driven deep into the Singapore bed rock would sever Singapore's Dragon Vein which extremely bad for the nation. The Feng Shui master thus adviced: "If you want to continue with this project, you should give every Singaporean household - Indian, Malay, Eurasian, Christian, Buddhist, Muslim - a Chinese Ba Gua. Or else bad luck will befall the people & country" .

Back when the first lines were completed, around 1987, I remember reading that the main parts of the system, e.g. tracks, power supply, signaling equipment, viaducts, etc. have a lifespan of 50 years. This means that in order to prevent the kind of breakdowns we 'enjoyed' and continue to 'enjoy', progressive overhauls would begin around the 45th year of the track.

The frequent breakdowns on the older lines, barely 25 years after operations started, probably means one, some or all of the following:
  • the system has not been maintained according to the specified requirements
  • the system has not been used according to specifications
  • the manufacturers cheated MRTC because of the unrealistically low tenders required to get the job.

[*]the system has not been maintained according to the specified requirements
Agree. Local culture always like to cut cost or go for cheapest options to save money and make the profit seems better. Nicoll highway incident is a very good example, simply go for cheapest.

[*]the system has not been used according to specifications
Agree. Quite often I will take MRT at Bedok station at around 3-4pm, it is so crowded at this hour. As compare to 5 years ago, it was a peaceful life, not anymore. Hence, the MRT system load is much higher than previously.

[*]the manufacturers cheated MRTC because of the unrealistically low tenders required to get the job.
Might be agreed. See the first point.

Well, people would like to do thing fast or do more in order to get more credit, but never DO IT RIGHT. An the end, we are the one who is suffering.
