I don't think they can call on the under 21 keeper for the champions league, since they had to name Phil Jones and Nick Powell in the squad.
Not the same as the premier league, where the under 21 players need not be named and can be called to play at any time.
It's amazing that Spurs could get Lloris for under 10 million pounds, whereas Fergie had to pay 18 million for De Gea.

Between now and December, there are only a handful of games. Moreover the teams they're playing on paper at least are not top tier ones. I may be wrong but I've not seen any team using more than 2 keepers in the round robin stage. Anyway, we still have Rio Ferdinand as a third option between the post if all else fail.

Ya but if Lloris were to be offered to United, that figure could easily inflate to 15 million pounds or more. Selling clubs often see the REALs and the Man U's differently. Well so far Fergie's record for paying well over market rates remains unblemished.

Man Utd order Nani to SHUT IT over contract complaints

Manchester United have told Nani to SHUT IT.

The Mirror says United have tried to GAG Nani over his uncertain future.

United are said to have told the Portugal midfielder to stop his public bleating over his contract dispute with the club. Nani has two years left on his current deal, but contract talks with United have broken down over his excessive wage demands.

United tried to offload Nani to Zenit St Petersburg in the summer transfer window, but a deal never materialised. Nani has made no secret of his anger at what he perceives to be his mistreatment by United over his contract situation.

United, in turn, have been angered by claims that Nani intends to run down his contract and leave for free when it expires, unless he gets a new deal.

The club are understood to have had enough of the 26-year-old complaining and told the winger to shut up and concentrate on playing football

Man U tried but this arsehole put up a ridiculous wage demand that turned Zenit off. What can United do? Bench him and you'll see his value fall off the cliff ala Berba. United can only hope he plays well enough to get the attention of other clubs and ditch him for good. Otherwise they'll just have to write off their investment and put him in cold storage for the next two years which I think is the best option.

Sir Alex: It'll be tight

Sir Alex Ferguson is expecting another tight contest at Anfield on Sunday and hopes his players can come up with the goods to ensure a positive result for the Reds.

United have not beaten Liverpool on their own patch since December 2007 when a Carlos Tevez goal secured three points.

Chicharito netted a late equaliser for Sir Alex's men in the league clash on Merseyside last season to secure a 1-1 draw and the boss is predicting another close match this time round.

"In tight games like this you know there are not going to be a lot of goals. It will be an odd-goal victory for either side or maybe a draw," said Sir Alex.

"Our away form last year was terrific, one of the best years we have had away from home. We hope that continues.

"We want to make sure we do our best and represent ourselves in the proper way. That is the key for us on Sunday, just to enjoy it. Once the whistle goes, go and win the game. That should be our attitude."

Vidic out for two months

Manchester United captain Nemanja Vidic has been ruled out for two months after undergoing a knee operation.

Vidic, 30, sustained an injury to the same knee in December 2011 that ruled him out the remainder of that campaign but returned to action for the club's Premier League opener against Everton this season.

He has made five appearance since his comeback but was left out of the 2-1 victory over Liverpool this weekend after complaining about the problem, with Sir Alex Ferguson saying at the time: "He felt a bit tight around his knee and we decided to give him a break."

He has now had surgery to rectify the issue and is likely to return in late November.

A club statement read: "Nemanja Vidic has had a meniscus operation on his right knee and will be out for around eight weeks.

"Sir Alex, as a precautionary measure, rested Vidic at the weekend, after he complained of tightness in his knee; however, further medical investigation revealed the underlying problem. The central defender was operated on this week and will be sidelined for about eight weeks."

United are already without Phil Jones and Chris Smalling, who have both yet to feature this season, and Rio Ferdinand and Jonny Evans are currently the only senior centre-backs available.

Michel Carrick has deputised in the position on several occasions, including the first two Premier League games of this season, while 20-year-old Scott Wootton, who spent time on loan with Nottingham Forest last season, could come in to make his first-team debut for United.

We're back to square one. If they had acquired a defensive midfielder, that investment will go a long way to plug any defensive vulnerabilities should any one of the key defenders get KOed. It can only make matters worse if they put Carrick in a central defensive role. The central midfield is once again hollowed. They should have taken Kaka on loan when they had that chance. Now its back to the drawing board. WTF!

Manchester United have announced a three-year partnership agreement with Azerbaijan telecommunications company Bakcell.

The company, who become the club’s first official telecommunications and broadcast partner for Azerbaijan, will have the rights to broadcast the Red Devils’ official television channel MUTV in the country and will also launch an official mobile package allowing subscribers in the country access to official club media.

Richard Arnold, the commercial director at Old Trafford, expressed his delight at the agreement.

"Manchester United is pleased to be joining forces with Bakcell,” he told the club’s official website.

“The two organisations have a history of being the first in their chosen field: Bakcell were Azerbaijan’s first mobile company way back in 1994 and have gone on to be the country’s most trusted operator, with over 2.5 million customers.”

"This new agreement is another first for Manchester United, with it being the only partnership the club has in the country.

“Our Azerbaijani fan base is ever increasing and we hope that our relationship with Bakcell will allow us to engage with these fans as well as bring them exclusive access to their favourite club."

Bakcell’s CEO Richard Shearer added: "Being the first mobile operator of Azerbaijan, Bakcell has always been the company of ‘firsts’ and collaboration with Manchester United, the world’s number one football brand is another proof to this statement.”

Manchester United seal partnership with Japanese soft drinks makers Kagome

Manchester United have secured a three-year partnership deal with Japanese-based soft drinks manufacturer Kagome.

The drinks company make a number of fruit-based products aimed at promoting a healthy lifestyle and will become United's official soft drinks partner in Japan until 2016.

The Old Trafford outfit also sealed a partnership with Azerbaijan broadcaster Bakcell recently, to seal broadcast rights and mobile telecommunications deals in the country.

Richard Arnold, Manchester United's commercial director told the club's official website: "Kagome’s products symbolise health and wellbeing and what better way to endorse this than to partner with the number one club in the world’s biggest sport.

"This is the club’s first partnership of its kind and we are delighted to be able to work with such a well-established company that, like United, has over 100 years’ experience in its field. Manchester United has almost four million followers in Japan and every time we visit, the welcome we receive is overwhelming.

"I hope that all of these fans will support this new way of connecting with the club and enjoy some of the great products and activities Manchester United and Kagome will bring them."

Ryo Koshino, executive officer and general manager for Kagome's corporate communications, also commented: "Kagome encourages and promotes a healthy lifestyle through exercise and vegetable intake.

"We feel our partnership with Manchester United, which is one of the world’s most popular football clubs, possessing a long history of tradition, will allow us to promote Kagome and our products to a wider audience.

"We will appreciate your continuous support of both Manchester United as well as Kagome products."

Fergie: No rift with Rio

Sir Alex Ferguson says he has resolved his "communication problem" with Rio Ferdinand but will rest the defender for Tuesday's Champions League clash with Braga.

• Blog: Unity an issue
• PFA: Rio has right to free speech

Ferdinand refused to wear a T-shirt promoting the Kick It Out anti-racism campaign before Saturday's 4-2 win over Stoke, which Ferguson branded "disappointing" and "embarrassing".

But the Manchester United manager, who said on Friday that all his players would don the T-shirt, has held clear-the-air talks with the centre-back.

And Ferguson said there will be no lasting damage to their relationship as he hinted that Ferdinand, who is out of contract at the end of the season, could get a new deal to keep him at Old Trafford for a 12th year.

He said: "The issue is pretty simple. I spoke to Rio. I think there was a communication problem. I think he felt I should have spoken to him on Friday. I didn't anticipate there would be any problem in the dressing room as far as the T-shirt was concerned.

"My advice to him is that I always think the union is stronger than any individual and it is important he airs his grievances to the right people, through the PFA or the FA. It has been a communication problem rather than anything else. Obviously as the manager of the club when you lay down policy you don't want to see it being ignored and that's where my anger came on Saturday. We have resolved the problem and that is the end of the matter."

Ferguson will omit Ferdinand and Patrice Evra for the match against Braga, who are third in the group and the Portuguese league, as he prepares for Sunday's Premier League trip to Stamford Bridge.

"There will be two main changes," he said. "We have a game on Sunday at Chelsea, I think that's a big one for us, and we will leave two of the older players out, Rio and Patrice Evra."

Ferdinand's current deal expires in 2013 but Ferguson believes he could have a future at Old Trafford. Veterans like Ryan Giggs and Paul Scholes have been given one-year contract extensions and the United manager hinted that the defender could receive a similar offer.

"We have always adopted that policy of offering one-year contracts," he said, "and also at 33, I think Rio can play for two or three years. He is not as quick as he was but that is not a big issue for me. His experience is important and there is no reason he can't stay on for another year. I didn't even realise his contract was up."

Meanwhile UEFA will ask all club captains to wear a 'United Against Racism' armband during this week's Champions League fixtures as part of a week of action by European anti-discrimination body FARE.

Manchester United owners announce buyout of training kit sponsorship

The Glazer family have decided to negotiate other sources of revenue, with General Motors having agreed a world record £500 million main strip deal to commence in 2014

By Alfie Meekings

Manchester United owners the Glazer family have announced their decision to buy back the sponsorship rights to their training kit.

United entered into a £40 million agreement with DHL in 2010 for the rights to sponsor their training wear, but have decided to take steps to end the agreement early as they feel better revenues could be sought elsewhere.

One reason stated to be behind the Glazers’ decision is their recent shirt sponsorship agreement with General Motors, in which the company will pay a world record figure of over £500m to succeed AON in 2014.

"The significantly increased value of agreements concluded since entering into this agreement [with DHL], such as our world record shirt sponsorship with General Motors, leads us to believe that there should be strategic opportunities to further optimise the value of these rights," the owners said in a statement released on Thursday.

The Old Trafford outfit did, however, announce that DHL would continue as global logistics sponsor for the club.

"We have successfully negotiated an early buy-out of our training kit agreement with DHL effective 30 June, 2013. DHL will then continue as our global logistics sponsor,” the statement added.
