Ferguson beaten but proud

6 February 2011

Sir Alex Ferguson lamented some poor defending from set pieces on Saturday as his side's 2-1 loss to Wolves ended a 29-game unbeaten streak.

Wolves responded well after going a goal down to a Nani strike early on, and goals from George Elokobi and Kevin Doyle handed them a memorable victory, although they remain at the bottom of the English Premier League on goal difference.

Ferguson said that while he was disappointed to see his men suffer their first league loss of the season, he was proud of the way his side had been playing.

"I'm disappointed obviously, it's been a long run for us," Ferguson told ESPN.
"The players have done us all proud; we can be pleased with that part, but today in the second half we didn't really get going."

"The consistency that we've shown over the past two months has been terrific so today was a big disappointment." "I've said that before the game, and it stands strong again after the game.

They are a handful on set-pieces as they proved today, and it's cost us the game." Ferguson also revealed that central defender Rio Ferguson had strained a calf during the warm-up for the game and will be sidelined for 'a couple of weeks'.

Wolves boss Mick McCarthy, meanwhile, was delighted to have picked up three points and is hoping to use the shock result as a springboard to lift his side out of the drop zone, targeting greater consistency in the final third of the season.

"We are in this position because whilst we have beaten some of the top teams, we have been bobbins against those around us. West Ham, Wigan, Blackpool - they have all taken points from us," McCarthy said.

"It is all right lounging around and basking in the sunny day of beating Manchester United, we have to do it against other teams and do damage to them to make sure we preserve our Premier League status."

Nani said that hope to finish the season unbeaten just a couple of days ago...

It was only a matter of time that MU's unbeaten run, helped by a large dose of luck would run out. They have not played well this season. VDS needs to come out of his area and help deal with the crosses. He did just that against Villa but some reason he forgot to read that same script with Wolves. Most of the goals MU conceded were through set plays. If Schmeichel were still between the post,he'd punched the ball out or whack the opposing player's head.

He would have been quite happy to whack his own player's head, if it meant that the ball was cleared.

When Nani and the 36 year old Giggs are the best players we have, every MU fan must be worried.

The stinkers in the United ranks this season has got to be Johnny Evans,Gibson, Carrick and Rooney.

Thank God Gary Neville has retired but it looks certain that Scholes will follow. He's struggling with his fitness and I suspect he may call it a day before the season is over.

Just to share some our cat calling.

Nani's the "balloonist", else he can be counted on for inventiveness in matches. Gibson's physique belies our nickname "han ze" (potato). Carrick despite his distribution (not seen too often) is "softie" and overpaid at that when we paid top dollar to Spurs then. Scholes has since done his time, now never quite the same after his eyesight do -often risking yellow with his mistimed tackles.

Roon? What can we say about this "shrek"?

Neville? Loyal servant, but yes mercifully retired on his own accord and spared us more heartache. Suffered humliation when he was substituted on start of 2nd half matches ago.

whatever happened to that Or-gui-tan (Obertan) - thot he is supposed to be Gigg's replacement? CMI?

the midfield used to be Man U's forte...now not so...haiz. Even if Valencia recovers, i dunno if his speed will be as before.

Nani blowing hot and cold...Park is a headless chicken.

Oh no, we really need a midfield heavy weight this summer. If we win the title, its a fluke -really.

Article from espnsoccernet below about Anderson and Hulk.
The last time Man Utd played Porto, Rooney ran over to Hulk when the final whistle blew and asked him to exchange jerseys. Even Hulk looked surprised.
My guess is because the name on the back of his jersey was "Hulk".

By ESPN staff

Manchester United midfielder Anderson believes Sir Alex Ferguson would do well to bring Porto striker Hulk to the club in the summer.

Hulk, whose full name is Givanildo Vieira de Souza, was linked with a move to Tottenham in January, but Harry Redknapp failed to bring in a big-name forward to boost his front line, despite being ready to spend up to £30 million. The 24-year-old has scored 19 goals in 18 league games for Porto this season, and Anderson believes his Brazil team-mate is well-suited to the Premier League.

"He has quality, would suit English football and I think he is good enough to do well at a big club," Anderson said in the Daily Mirror. "If it was my decision then I would sign him but Sir Alex Ferguson signs the players and his knowledge would mean he knows all about the player.

"We are playing well this season, but we always look for reinforcements. It would be a dream come true for us to win the title."

Hulk's agent, Teodoro Fonseca, believes his client will be moving to the Premier League in the summer.

"The big clubs in England have been in contact," Fonseca told News of the World in January. "They have asked about his contract situation but any decision about his future rests mainly with the directors of Porto. I think we could be discussing a move.

"I am calm about the situation and so is the player because he has an excellent future. I think we could be discussing a move in April or May."

incredible hulk...

in Football Manager, I will always buy him if able. His rating for long shots is fantastic...think Gibson can fuck off liao and he has the bulk to operate like a centre forward. But if he comes, who is going out? End of the road for Owen and maybe Bebakok.

Premier League: Man United 2 Man City 1

12 February 2011

12427215180.jpg

Manchester United claimed local bragging rights after Wayne Rooney's wonder goal gave them a 2-1 win over arch-rivals Manchester City.

The England striker scored a spectacular overhead kick to light up a tense Old Trafford derby and cement their place at the top of the Premier League. Nani had given the Red Devils a first half lead but City equalised in the second period with a deflected strike from Edin Dzeko.

But Rooney grabbed a stunning 78th minute winner to consolidate United's place atop the Premier League standings and deal a major blow to City's flailing title hopes.

United boss Sir Alex Ferguson, already without the injured Rio Ferdinand, sprang a surprise by leaving top scorer Dimitar Berbatov on the bench while Nigel de Jong and Mario Balotelli missed out through injuries for City.

The visitors controlled the opening exchanges and carved open the United defence in the fourth minute. A neat interchange between Yaya Toure and Carlos Tevez worked the ball through to David Silva but the Spaniard poked his shot inches wide from a tight angle.

At the other end, Nani fired a vicious strike inches over from 20 yards while Ryan Giggs picked out Darren Fletcher in the box but the midfielder headed straight at Joe Hart.

United went ahead in the 41st minute with a lightning-quick break that caught the Sky Blues sleeping. Rooney flicked on for Giggs to stroke a perfect ball through for Nani, who shrugged off Pablo Zabaleta and neatly finished past Hart.

City were struggling to create chances but got a lucky break in the 65th minute. Micah Richards pulled the ball back and Dzeko's shot took a huge deflection off Silva, wrong-footing Edwin van der Sar and ending up in the back of the net.

But United were back ahead when Nani's deflected cross was finished off by Rooney in spectacular fashion. City toiled for a second equaliser but Van der Sar was not called into serious action.

Nani eyeing United exit - reports
March 15, 2011

By ESPNsoccernet staff
Manchester United winger Nani is reportedly considering a move to Serie A in the near future despite having his best season in the Premier League to date.

According to British newspapers, Nani has told friends and family he is looking at leaving England and has asked his agent to explore options in Italy.

Nani has starred for United this season, scoring ten goals and setting up 15 others, but the reports claim he now feels as though he has proved himself in England and would like to take on a new challenge in the next couple of seasons.

United stars Nemanja Vidic, Patrice Evra and most recently Wayne Rooney have been convinced to stay at the club when considering moves away, but if Nani does exit it would come as a personal blow to manager Sir Alex Ferguson, who is only now reaping the rewards from a player he kept the faith with for years of underwhelming performances since signing him for £18 million in 2007.

Nani, who only signed a new four-year deal last season, will not push for a move but instead wait and see what opportunities emerge, according to The Guardian. A report in The Sun claims part of Nani's dissatisfaction at United is based on his belief he is now worth more than the wages he agreed to in his new deal.

Nani, 24, has been declared fit to face Marseille in the Champions League on Tuesday after recovering from the badly gashed leg he suffered in a tackle by Jamie Carragher in United's Premier League loss to Liverpool.

Pls leave.

Ferguson hit with five-game ban

16 March 2011

12427222720.jpg

Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson has been handed a five-match touchline ban and a hefty fine for comments made towards a referee.

The Football Association's disciplinary board imposed a three-match ban for Ferguson's verbal attack on referee Martin Atkinson after his side's 2-1 loss to Chelsea on March 1.

Following the loss, Ferguson said: "You want a fair referee or a strong referee anyway, and we didn't get that."

"I must say, when I saw who the referee was I feared it. I feared the worst."

A suspended two-match ban was also activated after Ferguson accused referee Alan Wiley of being 'not fit' following a game in October 2009.

The United boss was also fined 30,000 pounds and will miss league games against Bolton, West Ham, Fulham and Everton, as well as the derby FA Cup tie against Manchester City.

An FA statement on Wednesday read: "At an independent regulatory commission today Sir Alex Ferguson was handed a touchline suspension for three matches and fined a total of 30,000 pounds."

"The commission found the charge of improper conduct relating to media comments proven, following remarks made in relation to match official Martin Atkinson in post-match interviews after Manchester United's fixture with Chelsea at Stamford Bridge on Tuesday March 1, 2011."

"Furthermore the commission invoked a two-match suspended touchline ban, relating to a previous charge of improper conduct in relation to media comments made in October 2009."

"Therefore Sir Alex Ferguson was ordered to a serve a five-match touchline ban commencing on Tuesday March 22, 2011."

The league leaders are currently three points ahead of Arsenal, who have a game in hand.

Ferguson will have 48 hours to appeal the ban.

Ferguson accepts touchline ban

17 March 2011

12427223120.jpg

Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson will not be appealing his five-game touchline ban, the Football Association has confirmed.

The Scot was reprimanded for his criticism of match official Martin Atkinson after United's 2-1 defeat to Chelsea last week, in addition to being handed a 30,000 pound fine.

Ferguson was candid in his assessment of his punishment on Thursday, saying: "It is disappointing. It (football) is the only industry you can't tell the truth in."

But despite his opinion, United have chosen not to contest the ban, meaning Ferguson will will be missing for his side's FA Cup clash with Arsenal as well as four league matches.

"The FA can confirm that Manchester United will not be appealing Sir Alex Ferguson's five game touchline ban," a statement from the FA read.

"Manchester United have also requested that the ban starts with immediate effect. This has been accepted by the FA."

Ferguson: Ferdinand will be back

18 March 2011

12427223350.jpg

Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson has dismissed speculation Rio Ferdinand's playing career could be over.

The United boss revealed this week that the England centre back's calf injury could see him miss the rest of the current campaign.

The 32-year-old has not played since United's 3-1 win over Aston Villa in the English Premier League on February 1 and has made just 15 appearances this season.

Despite reports his time at the top could be coming to an end because of his persistent niggles, Ferguson insists his captain will return to his best.

"Rio has plenty of years ahead of him," Ferguson said.

"He has had a few injuries over the last few years I am sure that are a concern for him."

"But he is still capable of coming back and playing at the top level."

"He is desperate to get back and he will."

"Calf injuries can be troublesome. I remember Bryan Robson was out for four months with a calf injury."

"It is looking that way again with Rio."

"We are not looking at it as a short-term situation for us. He has been out for a few weeks now anyway and has not started training yet."

"It looks to me as if we will be lucky to get him back for some point of the season."

Premier League: Manchester United 1 Bolton 0

20 March 2011

12427223680.jpg

Dimitar Berbatov struck with two minutes to go as United returned to winning ways in the Barclays Premier League.

The Bulgarian, who has fallen out of favour in recent weeks, climbed over the bench to rescue the Red Devils, who appeared to be labouring to a stalemate.

It was tough on Bolton, who frustrated United for much of the afternoon, restricting them to few chances.

And United looked to be following up defeats at Chelsea and Liverpool with just a point when Jonny Evans was sent off for a challenge that left Stuart Holden writhing in agony.

The three points will be a huge relief to Sir Alex Ferguson, who watched from the stands after starting his five-game touchline ban but kept in touch with coach Rene Meulensteen by telephone.

With attacking line-ups on both sides, the game started at a blistering pace with Fabrice Muamba falling over a good chance from eight yards out and Wayne Rooney blasting just wide from long range.

United then felt they should have had a penalty on 10 minutes when Wes Brown's far post header dropped for Javier Hernandez whose close range effort appeared to be deflected wide off Gary Cahill's hand.

Rooney tried another spectacular volley that was well stopped by Jussi Jaaskelainen and then pulled a cross back for Hernandez, who clipped his shot just wide.

Ferguson made a double switch at half-time with Fabio and leading scorer Berbatov coming into the action but United were finding it difficult to break down the well-organised Bolton back-line.

England centre-halves Gary Cahill and David Wheater marshalled the defence superbly and made last ditch tackles to deny Rooney and Berbatov as the frustration inside Old Trafford began to grow.

They finally worked some space in the box in the 73rd minute when Rooney laid the ball off to Berbatov but his curling effort was just off target.

United were reduced to 10 men with 15 minutes to go when Evans was shown a straight red for a challenge on Holden, who was carried off with his team-mates clearly shaken by his injury.

And it almost got worse from the free-kick with Johann Elmander's strike drifting narrowly wide.

Rooney cut inside to force a desperate save from Jaaskelainen while Matty Taylor wasted a free header as both sides pushed for all three points late on.

And with two minutes to go, United grab the winner when Nani's shot was spilled by Jaaskelainen and Berbatov scrambled the ball home from two yards.

The much labored victory over Bolton merely reaffirms the club's need to replenish the squad. In the final third of the season, Giggs and Scholes appear to be struggling with fitness after injury and Evra was for the most part of the game and season-lost!!. Carrick as usual was absolute rubbish which leaves us with Nani, the cry baby.

It will be a miracle if we win any trophies this season.
