United will learn from defeat, says Ferguson

United will learn from defeat, says Ferguson

Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson said inexperience was behind United's stunning 4-0 Carling Cup loss to West Ham United on Tuesday.

Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson said inexperience was behind United's stunning 4-0 Carling Cup loss to West Ham United on Tuesday. Ferguson made 10 changes to the side that flattened Blackburn 7-1 on Saturday, with the likes of Fabio da Silva, Chris Smalling, Jonny Evans and Bebe getting a run at Upton Park.

But his young side were no match for a buoyant West Ham, surrendering four goals and nearly giving away at least two more in the one-sided tie. Ferguson acknowledged that his players simply did not have the experience to come back from an early deficit. "We didn't expect that, that's for sure. I think what happened is we lost some terrible goals, and they're too young to carry mistakes like that and go and win a game," Ferguson told Sky Sports.

"Too many younger players made real errors on the goals and you can't give away goals like that even though they're young." "The young players will remember it but this could have been a good opportunity to win the cup again. We were in control in the early part, played some good football. But goals change games."

"West Ham were fired up, they made a lot of challenges, that's the way they approached the game and it's understandable." Asked if he believed his players would gain something from the loss, Ferguson said: "That's the thing we invest in; we've always done well with that." "Young players come through these periods and lose games. A few years ago we lost to Coventry and they learned their lesson that day."

Manchester United has been drawing too many games. An outburst of a heavy win is still worth just 3 points. If the 7 goals were spread over 7 draws turning them into wins, that's worth extra 14 points (21 total less 7 already earned for the draws) and the seaon's wrapped up. That's the value of consistency. Of course, that's hindsight best scenario and not so realistic, but the points lost to draws could have been limited to less. I can't recall any club undefeated and yet failed to win the league. Not a good record to break and hold anyway. On the brighter side for MU, the table leadership and goal difference have been restored.

===

4-0 reversal to West Ham...literally threw away the match. SAF simply boh hieu this competition.

I rather they win their matches 1-0, 2-0 than win 7-1 and draw the next 4 - 5 matches...defeats the purpose. thus far, they only won 1 game at Stoke away...rest all draw.

Manchester United hopes of summer move for Bastian Schweinsteiger scuppered by Bayern Munich

Manchester United are facing a new battle with Bayern Munich if they are to lure Bastian Schweinsteiger to Old Trafford next summer.

The Bundesliga club have warned that Germany international Schweinsteiger will be forced to honour the remaining 18 months of his contract.

United, who spent more than a year attempting to thrash out a deal for Owen Hargreaves prior to his £18m transfer from Bayern in May 2007, are keen to take advantage of Schweinsteiger’s current contract stalemate with last season’s Champions League finalists.

Schweinsteiger, 26, has so far refused to commit to a new deal at the Allianz Arena, prompting United, Chelsea and Barcelona to increase their interest in the player, who starred for Germany during the World Cup.

Schweinsteiger has admitted a desire to play in the Premier League, with United understood to be his preferred destination, but Bayern chairman Karl-Heinz Rummenigge has ruled out the prospect of a sale next summer to avoid him leaving as a free agent in June 2012.

Rummenigge said: “Let me make this absolutely clear - our goal is to agree a long-term contract extension with Bastian Schweinsteiger. “And we’ve agreed with (coach) Louis van Gaal that Bastian will not under any circumstances be allowed to leave until his contract ends.

“We all think Bastian has come on superbly in the last two years. He has become one of Bayern and Germany’s best players. “He was a vital component in our success last season and our success this season and I’m optimistic that we will reach a fair solution with Bastian and his agents.”

Bayern, who reported an annual turnover of €312m on Tuesday, have agreed long-term contracts with Franck Ribery, Thomas Mueller and Philipp Lahm since the end of last season.

United match off due to freezing conditions

United match off due to freezing conditions

Wind turbines stand in snow covered fields in Burnley, north-west England. Manchester United´s bid to maintain their position on the top of the Premier League with victory at Blackpool on Saturday has been scuppered by the freezing temperatures in England.

LONDON (AFP) - Manchester United's bid to maintain their position on the top of the Premier League with victory at Blackpool on Saturday has been scuppered by the freezing temperatures in England.

United are two points clear of second placed Chelsea but they may lose first place after their game was postponed as a result of the snow that has ravaged most of the country. Blackpool chiefs confirmed that the match would become the first top-flight fixture to be postponed this weekend due to a frozen pitch at Bloomfield Road despite the club's use of protective covers and hot-air blowers.

Temperatures had dipped below minus eight in Blackpool and the match was officially called off after referee Peter Walton carried out an inspection on Friday. A statement on the club's website read: "Mr Walton expressed concern that the severely affected areas of the playing surface would not thaw sufficiently for the game to be completed."

Chelsea will replace United at the top if they win on Saturday against Everton. If the Blues slip up, Arsenal can take pole position by beating Fulham. Championship leaders QPR's trip to Hull headed the list of postponements in the English lower leagues as the ice and snow took its toll.

That clash was cancelled on safety grounds by the Tigers, meaning the match went the same way as Nottingham Forest v Bristol City and Portsmouth v Burnley. The South Yorkshire derby between Doncaster and Barnsley fell victim to the weather on Thursday, as did Reading's trip to Sheffield United.

Only four League One matches - those at Swindon, Exeter, Bristol Rovers and Brentford - survive, and just two - at Northampton and Oxford - in League Two. All Scottish Premier League matches this weekend were postponed on Wednesday due to the weather, with the only fixture still slated to go ahead; Alloa v Peterhead in the Second Division.

Fergie handed £100m war chest

Fergie handed £100m war chest

By NEIL CUSTIS

ALEX FERGUSON has been handed £100million to strengthen his Manchester United squad.

The 4-0 humiliation to West Ham in the Carling Cup on Tuesday night showed the lack of depth at Old Trafford. Fergie's windfall came after he told United's board he needed to spend big. The huge war chest will surprise many of the fans who have opposed the Glazers' regime since they bought the club in 2005 - and lumbered it with £705m of debt.

United boss Ferguson has always defended the Yanks, despite the fans' 'Green and Gold' campaign to oust them. Fergie needs some big players to replace Old Trafford legends Paul Scholes and Ryan Giggs, who are both probably in their last season. And he also wants another top-class striker with only Wayne Rooney and - occasionally - Dimitar Berbatov carrying the goalscoring burden.

Ferguson defended his squad when Rooney questioned the ambition of the club in October and threatened to quit. While the Red Devils were unbeaten this season until the Hammers hammering, they had drawn seven of their 15 Premier League games and are top almost by default.

United have been impressive in qualifying for the knockout stage of the Champions League. And if they keep a clean sheet against Valencia on Tuesday, they will become the first team ever to get through the group stage without conceding a goal.

100m? Nah...most likely 20m the max...and provided he ship out the deadwood like carrick and Wes brown.

I think BPL is gonna have a ruling for clubs to field certain % of players trained in UK or something like that? This gonna have an impact on transfer activities and forcing the clubs to keep deadwood in order to respect this ruling?

WikiLeaks: Burma's junta leader tried to buy Manchester United

Burma's junta leader tried to buy Manchester United for $1billion eight months after a tropical cyclone killed 140,000 of its people.

By Christopher Hope, Whitehall Editor 8:27PM GMT 06 Dec 2010

Than Shwe, commander in chief of the armed forces and a Man Utd fan , was urged to mount a takeover bid by his grandson, according to a leaked cable.

The cable, seen by The Guardian newspaper, disclosed how the regime used football to distract its population from ongoing political and economic problems.

A $1billion bid would have been enough to acquire a 56 per cent controlling stake in the club.

The communiqué, sent in June 2009 to Washington, said: "One well-connected source reports that the grandson wanted Than Shwe to offer $1bn for Manchester United. "The senior general thought that sort of expenditure could look bad, so he opted to create for Burma a league of its own."

The proposal was made in or before January 2009, according to the cable. Months earlier, in May 2008, Rangoon had been accused of blocking vital international aid supplies after Cyclone Nargis struck, killing 140,000 people. Mr Shwe reportedly decided not to make a bid on the grounds that it might "look bad", according to a leaked cable.

In the event, the Burma national football league was launched on 16 May 2009, with Than Shwe's grandson playing one team, according to another cable.

The dispatch added: "Many Burmese businessmen speculate the regime is using it as a way to distract the populace from ongoing political and economic problems or to divert their attention from criticism of the upcoming 2010 elections."

Rested United to field strongest side against Valencia

Rested United to field strongest side against Valencia

MANCHESTER, England, Dec 6 (Reuters) - Manchester United will field their strongest side against Valencia in Tuesday's Champions League game despite having already reached the next round, manager Alex Ferguson said on Monday.

Ferguson, whose team's next two Premier League matches are against leaders Arsenal and champions Chelsea, could have rested players for the final Group C match but after 10 days without a game is keen to use his best ones to seal top spot.

The English side lead the group with 13 points from five matches, while Valencia have 10 and could snatch first place -- and a better chance of avoiding the big guns in the next round -- with a win at Old Trafford due to a better goal difference.

Teams who finish top will be drawn against group runners-up in the Dec. 17 draw for the knockout stages. "The sensible approach is to avoid the bigger hitters like Real Madrid and Barcelona and Bayern Munich, they are the teams that are number one in their groups at the moment," Ferguson told a news conference.

"We can only do that if we finish top of our group and that's what we want to do." United's players have had extra rest after their weekend league fixture at Blackpool was postponed because of a frozen pitch. Many first-team players have not played since the 7-1 demolition of Blackburn Rovers on Nov. 27, with a second-string side thrashed 4-0 by West Ham United in the League Cup quarter-finals last week.

"We'd have preferred to have played a game on Saturday. The only advantage we've got is that no one gets injured," said Ferguson. "They haven't played for 10 days. "I will play my strongest side tomorrow and then we have six days to prepare for the Arsenal game so it's OK."

Ferguson has this season experimented with some of his younger players in Champions League games and it has paid off as United stand on the verge of becoming the first team to get through all their group matches without conceding a goal.

It has, however, been a different story domestically and some of those young players were involved in the West Ham humiliation which ended the team's 29-match unbeaten run in all competitions. "In European games, they realise that maybe concentration has got to be 100 percent," Ferguson said.

"It's a different atmosphere and a different challenge. All players like to be involved in the European cup. You know that if you win your group you are into that stage of the tournament where it becomes very interesting." Ferguson has no new injury concerns but said he would not risk playing striker Michael Owen, who returned to first team training last week following a hamstring problem.

Manchester United and Arsenal both need to buck up their ideas ahead of Monday's showdown at Old Trafford, according to Sir Alex Ferguson.

Manchester United and Arsenal both need to buck up their ideas ahead of Monday's showdown at Old Trafford, according to Sir Alex Ferguson.

"I think we're all probably analysing how we've dropped points - it's the nature of the league. Chelsea, Arsenal and ourselves have all dropped points," the United manager said.

In years gone by the Christmas period has been a season-defining one for clubs chasing the title but with United and Arsenal both dropping more points than usual, Ferguson says nothing will be decided just yet.

"In a normal situation you'd say this period is probably the most important part of the season but in the way this league has turned out, it's difficult to assess," Ferguson said.

"Look at Sunderland for example - a few weeks ago they were third or fourth bottom." "Now they've had a bit of consistency and won a few games and are challenging for a European place."

"That's the way we used to consider things in the championship. In the title race you could win two games and be back in the play-off position and lose two games and be back down to fourth or fifth bottom. It's that kind of league. It's changed."

Manchester United have several players returning to fitness and Ferguson should have a full squad to choose from.

"Everyone is fit. Paul Scholes started training on Thursday. It was just light stuff but hopefully he will be available for Monday and Rio [Ferdinand] should be fit as well," he said.

"Jonny [Evans] and Wes [Brown] have had a bit of a virus that has been going around the place. We should have a full squad for Monday."

Manchester United Vs ArseWipe
Old Trafford
Monday, 14 December 2010
04:00am

Like my main man Evra had said,
ArseWipe are like a youth academy,
you go there to learn football but not to win.
They play beautiful football but they don't win trophies.
People call ArseWipe the "Barcelona of England".
Barcelona play great football but they win trophies,
ArseWipe have won nothing for 5 long years!!
Every year its the same BullShit about
they are so good and the should win the league,
but as usual they will crash and burn
during the Feb/Mar run-in period.
To me, they are a a bunch of whiny guniang undersized kids
that can be beaten up !

Prediction
Man Utd 2 ArseWipe 1

Prediction
Man Utd 2 ArseWipe 1

Man Utd 1 Arsewipe 0

It wasn't a great performance,
but at least Man Utd defended well, and restricted ArseWipe.
The back 4 were in Sir Alex own words, immense!!
Park was the match winner.
Overall a great team performance.
Job well done, 3 points, still unbeaten.
2pts and a game in hand, UNITED ARE FLYING AWAY to
the record-breaking 19th come next May.

Manchester United (9-0-7) has 34 points, two more than Arsenal (10-5-2) and Manchester City (9-3-5) and three ahead of Chelsea (9-4-4).

Wayne Rooney sent a penalty kick high and wide for United in the 73rd minute after Gael Clichy was called for a hand ball in the penalty area.

Park to miss seven games for United

Park to miss seven games for United

15 December 2010

12427195330.jpg

Manchester United match-winner Park Ji-Sung is caught between club and country, as he will miss seven games for the Reds on national duty.

The South Korean midfielder scored the winner in United's 1-0 win over title rivals Arsenal on Monday. He also scored a brace, including a late winner, against Wolves in November, enhancing his reputation as a big-game player.

He will fly out of England shortly after Boxing Day to play at the Asian Cup in January, although his absence from the United side could be shortened depending on how far South Korea progress.

Park is unsure how to feel about representing his country while United continue their push for the league title. "I have mixed feelings about the Asian Cup. At the moment I am playing with confidence, so I do feel a bit strange about going. But I am always happy to join my national team as well," Park said.

"Even without me, Manchester United have enough players to keep winning, so I will concentrate on the national team and then focus on Manchester United." Park admitted his header on Monday was unconventional.

"It was a strange goal," Park said. "The ball changed direction so I had to move suddenly." "I thought it was going to hit the post. But finally it went in and I was able to celebrate. It was a good goal for me and the team."
