RAFA: GERRARD INJURY NOT SERIOUS
Rafa Benitez has played down any fears over Steven Gerrard's fitness for the start of the season. The skipper is back at Melwood after leaving the Swiss training camp with a groin problem.
While certain to miss tomorrow's friendly against Hertha Berlin in Germany, Gerrard could be in contention for the trip to Villarreal on July 30.
Benitez said: "Steven has a groin problem, it's not serious but he cannot train and he wouldn't be available for this game so we decided to send him back to Melwood for training.
"He should be okay in about a week. It's not serious but there's no sense to keep him here being unable to train or play."

For me, can't wait to watch Daniel Pacheco and this Ngog fella getting some 1st team games under their belts... really want to watch and gauge how good they are (if not now, then perhaps in the years ahead).

Ngog is one of the brightest young talents in French football.
His tally of just one goal from 18 league appearances last term was largely down to PSG's disappointing form – a contention backed up by his prolificacy on the international stage.
The lightning quick forward has scored goals at every youth level for France, including two absolute corkers against England Under-19s last season.
Ngog is the cousin of former Newcastle United defender Jean-Alain Boumsong.

I have never heard of this Ngog before. Hopefully like our bro says, not as useless as Boumsong.
Btw, why does our Liverpool keep on buying players which we have never seen or known before? We are not sure whether they are really gd or not. Hopefully Rafa plays his card right.
But then experience shows that these players will need one or two season to adapt to EPL...of coz some exception like torres...perform so well in his 1st season in Eng.

Sigh... Wat to do? We dun have the $$ power like Chelsea or R Madrid. Imagine these clubs are rumoured to put astronomical kinda bids for players like Kaka, C Ronaldo etc... Dun think we will come to that stage/level any time sooner... Think Rafa & Wenger are kinda similar when it comes to buying players. Prudent buying (tho honestly, I think Wenger enjoyed more success... so far) coupled with limited $$ kitty bags. Yes... for young players... think they would need a couple of years in the EPL. With Ryan Babel into his 2nd year now... I hope he can better his last year's performance.

Liverpool close in on £18m deal for Keane
Liverpool should complete the £18million signing of Robbie Keane within the next 24 hours.
It is understood the Republic of Ireland international has undergone a medical today.
If there are no problems with the tests, Keane may even be able to fly to Spain tomorrow with the Liverpool squad ahead of Wednesday's friendly against Villarreal.
Liverpool boss Rafael Benitez completed the finals stages of negations with the Tottenham striker over the weekend, with the fee likely to rise to £20million with add-ons.
Keane is expected to sign a five-year deal worth around £80,000 per week to join the club he has supported since boyhood.
The move to Anfield will be the fifth big transfer of his career, with Keane having previously played for Wolves, Coventry, Inter Milan and Leeds.
Keane has become Benitez's number one summer target over recent weeks, with the need to replace Peter Crouch more important that pursuing the complicated, protracted, move for Aston Villa's Gareth Barry.
With the prospect of Xabi Alonso now remaining at Anfield, Liverpool may now decline to respond to Villa boss Martin O'Neill's demand that they make their intentions regarding Barry clear.
Liverpool's response is that Villa have turned down four bids for Barry and the Merseysiders will not meet an £18million valuation.
Benitez will now be unwilling to allow full-back Steve Finnan, a possible makeweight in a deal for Barry, to leave the club.
That is the consequence of new signing Philipp Degan being expected to need surgery on a groin injury which will rule him out of the start of the season.
There is also the likelihood that Alvaro Arbeloa could return to Spain for £6million in the coming weeks, the Spanish international having expressed a desire to return home for personal reasons.
All such problems will be put aside by Benitez when he is able to unveil Keane as the new strike partner for Fernando Torres.

Keane is the fifth summer addition to Rafa Benitez's first-team squad after the arrival of David Ngog, Diego Cavalieri, Philipp Degen and Andrea Dossena.
The transfer is the sixth major move of a career which began with South Dublin side Crumlin United before the prodigious teenager burst onto the scene at Wolverhampton Wanderers in 1997.
A big-money move to top flight Coventry followed before Marcelo Lippi, manager of Italian giants Inter Milan, offered £13million for his services in 2000.
Keane would team up with Ronaldo and Christian Vieri in Serie A, though the move was to turn sour when Lippi was sacked.
A loan to Leeds United was arranged in December 2000, a deal made permanent six month later.
Unfortunately, Keane's arrival at Elland Road coincided with a growing financial crisis, and he was to join the exodus of stars in 2002 with a £7million transfer to Tottenham Hotspur.
Over the next few years the frontman, famed for his cartwheel goal celebration, finally settled, tallying an impressive 107 goals in 253 appearances and becoming a firm fans' favourite.
So good was his form in February 2006 that Inter president Massimo Moratti admitted his regret at letting Keane go.
Three months before departing for Merseyside he won his first senior honour as a player after helping Spurs beat Chelsea in the League Cup final.
The 28-year-old has also carved out a name for himself on the international stage having made up part of the so-called Golden Generation which emerged in the late 1990s.
The striker was part of the Irish side which triumphed in the 1998 European U18 Championships just months after making his senior bow against the Czech Republic.
