[h=2]Khaw Boon Wan flip-flops: I am ‘convinced’ the foldable bikes are ‘warranted’[/h]Posted by temasektimes on August 5, 2012

After receiving widespread criticisms from Singaporeans for spending too much on the Brompton bikes, National Development Minister Khaw Boon Wan now flip-flops and say he is ‘convinced’ that they are warranted.

Mr Khaw has received much flak lately for handling the controversy which he initially dismissed before suspending the NPark officer who bought the bikes and refer the matter to CPIB for further investigations.

The bikes caused $2,200 each and the tender was called during the Chinese New Year period.

Speaking on the sidelines of a community event, Mr Khaw revealed he recently went along with the officers while they did their inspection rounds and is convinced that for the type of work the officers do, foldable bikes are warranted.

Minister Khaw Boon Wan touched on the issue of the Brompton bikes bought by NParks.

He added that it’s the right call to buy foldable bicycles but how it’s acquired is a different story.

“You go up and down natural terrain, it was very hard on my bottoms, after just a couple of hours riding with them; and then because the park connector goes through areas which are quite remote, and sometimes you’ve got to cross the road using overhead bridge, and they have to carry the bikes with them. That’s why just now I was trying to lift these cheaper bikes which are not foldable, it’s not easy,” he explained.

The French make perfectly good and reliable foldable bikes that cost about $600 bucks. Same as Brompton style. Same function. $2,200 is the issue and not whether it si foldable or not. He bought the Ferrari of folding bikes.

It worth the $$$ Cheap, Good with Hands Free function and the man hours into make the bike is worth every cents. Should ask Npark to buy some more. Since they are so loaded with so much $$$ to waste

What has foldable option to do with hard on the bottoms? If he has been more careful overseeing his Ministry, that surely will be less hard on the bottom because Singaporeans will stop screwing him!

If carrying up and down overhead bridges is a problem, foldable bikes, which are not nec lighter, may not be the soln. There are titanium framed road bikes that are lighter and cost less.

Wtf! Another $8 obfuscation.

what's new? Khaw, in charge of Ministry of Health previously, also thought nothing of TT Durai's misdeeds at NKF.

This government is full of dirt. NParks is just the tip of the iceberg. What happened to the defense department purchases and contracts no one knows, what happened to the food supplied to our NSmen from SFI no one knows. Classic that the first reaction is to deny and defend, KBW go back to your Buddhist temple and meditate and reflect your actions. Plundering and Treason is punishable by death, repent.

All he needed is a $25 gel seat cover from any bike outlet which makes seating easier on the bum. any cyclist can tell you that.

There seems to be a surge of public servants implicated in graft. NParks, CNB, SCDF,SPH etc etc. And not your normal junior officers. The latest case of the senior Ministry of Health officer who quit just before she was going to be fired after a "conflict of interest" over tenders awarded.

What I don't understand is that while the officer concerned had also given work to the vendor (who was her cousin) on several occations before, MOH can declare that there was no evidence of fraud or criminal wrongdoing. So she gets away by just quiting?

On a lighter note, I also note that park connectors are not really connectors if you have to cross a road using an overhead bridge...

There is a local company selling foldable OEM bikes for under S$500. It may not be the highest quality, but it is comparable to Dahon mid range grade. No one seemed to have make an effort to identify and support local enterprises, instead choosing to support expensive imported bikes. Or were they too embarrassed to support local copied models? As far as I know, Samsung started business this way. Even the famous Brompton founder, Andrew Richie, copied the Bickerton design and improved on it over many years before its success today.
