Survive as in earn enough for decent quality of life. Cook your own meals, do your laundry, marketing, manage your finances.. Remember no helper or maid. And still look good, house looks good.. Etc. I can tell u, it's not easy!

Not really that hard if you lead a simple life. I've also had plenty of experience looking after myself during my Uni days.

I'm more likely to use hiking pants, polo shirts,.. that don't need much ironing. I cook simple but healthy meals. I only do housekeeping once a week & am considering getting one of those robot cleaners to do it more regularly. I go marketing about 2-3 times a week to get fresh food & avoid canned foods.

I worry about getting old in Spore when it will get harder to carry stuff & travel by bus. That is why I am making plans to live elsewhere where I can own a car.

Not really. But like majority, eat out and occasionally cooked Maggie noodles. Did my ironing in SAF, officer so got lots of ironing! But now semi retired in my 60s, living alone so decided to do everything myself and also to make sure the place don't look like a slum, I set some high standard of housekeeping!

It is kind of hard to believe that you are still learning about cooking and housekeeping at the age of 60? seriously? You never done all these in your younger time, beside army.

I find that cooking is the hardest thing to do. You can try getting a pressure cooker.

Something like the Taiyo Pressure cooker http://www.lazada.sg/taiyo-pressure-cooker-5l-manual-pc53m-103936.html
I have another brand & use it to steam my veggies.

You can also use it to do something called one pot cooking. You put all the ingredient in the pot & let the cooker do the cooking. There are many recipes out there for this style of cooking http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_noss_1?url=search-alias=aps&field-keywords=one+pot+cooking

Have you consider using redmart to buy heavy stuff such as rice, laundry softener, floor washing liquid? I am looking at this option as my arms and shoulders hurt after lugging them back from the supermarket. I don't use portable trolley as moving it when it is fully laden with stuff can be quite difficult on pavements.

do yard work under the sun for hours and you'll understand why sinkies shun the work that foreign workers do.

I find that cooking is the hardest thing to do.

For me, I find cleaning up after cooking is the hardest thing to do and I don't do deep fry, just stir fry. Food preparation is also rather time consuming compared to cooking time unless I am doing boiled soup like lotus root soup or white radish and carrot soup where I put the soup on a boil for 1+ hour.

It is not too difficult. Clear out the unnecessary stuff in the house and adopt a minimalist lifestyle. The fewer things in the house, the fewer worries you have in maintaining them. And so have more time for yourself to do other things. Also makes it easier to clean the house.

Laundry is easy. Washing machine does the job. When the wash is done, just hang on bamboo poles and let the baju dry. I buy those shorts like the reebok ones and adidas clima cool t-shirts so I minimise the ironing time.

The reason I choose to go more often for groceries is because the load I have to carry is less & the vegetables & fruits are fresher. I also need the exercise to walk to the market:o However when I return home with the groceries I take the bus.

If I expect to carry a big load e.g. buying those big 1.5 litres bottles of water I bring along my backpack.

I use a steam cleaner to mop my floors. This eliminates the need for chemicals. I got the Black & Decker model
http://www.lazada.sg/catalog/?q=steam+mop

I've cut back on eating red rice rice & consume more veggies because too much rice is not healty if you have diabetes.

I totally agreed, Sinkies are bunch of faggort, useless, spolied brat and gu-nigiang.

sinkie men who have gone through ns should know. doing yard work in california under good weather is already tough. can sympathize with workers in sg doing road work, construction, and street cleaning in the late morning or early afternoon. very siong. i have several fruit trees in my orchard to harvest, temperature is over 90 degrees f, i'm contemplating hiring illegal mexicans waiting by the home depot store to do the grunt work. but, not to encourage and feed the need for illegals, i have decided to do it all myself. will post more homemade jams and recipes in the emigration folder under california drought.

Thanks for highlighting the steam mop. I wasn't aware this thing exists. I usually magicklean every alternate days and spin mop once every 2-3 weeks. The kitchen floor is cleaned every time when I do cooking which is almost every day.

I use those high tech pants from Patagonia, Royal Robbins, Columbia,... they last for years & years, are comfortable & quick drying. Don't need to be ironed & I'm still using a pair I got 15 years ago. I use them everyday in Spore as well as when I'm traveling.

For shirts I like the Nike dri-fit Golf shirts. I've got 8 of them. Having a couple of spares reduces the need to do the laundry. They wick away perspiration & don't need ironing after washing. They have a silky texture & come in american sizes which helps to hides my spare tire:smile:

If you live alone and in a studio apartment, then its easy if income is sufficient. Living in a shared apartment in one room is inconvenient.
I think with current situation, developers should come up with a small dormitory room with shared kitchen and maybe tv room. And sell it in huge number cheaply.

Many Sporeans are probably too busy in the office to cook & clean.
I understand because when I was working I was in the same boat. Too busy to even look after my own health.

Things were much better when I was living in Canada. Had more free time to socialise after work because one could knock off at 4pm.
