SITIAWAN: Twenty-one passengers escaped unhurt when the express bus they were travelling in crashed into a car.

However, the driver of the car, Ong Yeow Hing, 23, was killed in the accident that happened at 10th kilometre of the Ipoh-Lumut Highway at 10am yesterday.

Manjung OCPD Asst Comm Jamil Osman said initial investigations showed that Ong, who was heading towards Lumut, had tried to avoid a vehicle which came out from a junction.

“In his attempt to avoid the car, the victim’s car swerved to the opposite side of the road, colliding with the oncoming express bus,” he said.

“We believe the victim was speeding,” he added.

The bus driver hit the emergency brake but to no avail, ACP Jamil said.

The bus which was on the way to Butterworth from Lumut was slightly damaged.

Ong’s body was sent to the Manjung Hospital.
