Cherian George's tenure at NTU not renewed

Confuseous

An outspoken associate professor for journalism in Nanyang Technological University (NTU) has been denied tenure, sparking an outcry and raising questions over academic freedom in Singapore.

Cardiff University professor Karin Wahl-Jorgensen tweeted Saturday morning that Cherian George, associate professor at NTU’s Wee Kim Wee School of Communication and Information (WKWSCI), was denied tenure “on the grounds of quality of teaching and research”.

In subsequent tweets, Wahl-Jorgensen, who revealed that she was one of the reviewers for George’s case, said she was “outraged” at the decision not to grant him tenure, and that it could have been “because he sometimes expressed political opinions”.

An adjunct senior research fellow at the Institute of Policy Studies and former journalist with The Straits Times, George has spoken out against media control and has been critical of the ruling People’s Action Party. He joined NTU in 2004.

Wahl-Jorgensen alluded to NTU’s decision being detrimental “for academic freedom” and said it raised “big question marks about international collaborations” with Singapore and NTU.

She said also said George’s application was “watertight” and believed the board’s decision “made no sense on grounds of research and teaching”.

Tenure would give him the contractual right not to have his position terminated without just cause. George was previously denied tenure once in 2009 when he was promoted to the position of associate professor. Typically, academic promotions are accompanied by tenures.

This is one bizarre case. The wife is deputy editor at ST, the brother-in-law a cabinet minister. The guy went to Cambridge Columbia and Stanford. That would place him within the top 3 in NTU and most GLC based on the institutions that he attended.

"I would want to form an alternative policies group in Parliament, comprising 20 PAP MPs. These 20 PAP MPs will be free to vote in accordance with what they think of a particular policy. In other words, the whip for them will be lifted. This is not playing politics, this is something which I think is worthwhile doing."

GCT is an asshole indeed, and a big one at that. On the Hong Lim protest against the white paper, he said the speeches were one-sided. It was a farking PROTEST! What was he expecting? To plead the (hopeless) case for the PAP??? Real asshole.

Maybe Cherian will consider standing for election as an opposition candidate. Time to give the PAP the finger.

You can suck up to the PAP for years and then you start to show some independent thinking, they humtum you instead of appreciating an alternate viewpoint.

You don't him well.
If he want to join opposition, he would have done that a long time ago. It won't happen.

One of the brightest chaps we have. Authored books, did so much in the public space yet cannot get a tenure in a local Uni.

perhaps now he could find sufficient compulsion to enlist his energies and intellect to the Opposition and weigh in ....

He will be such a strategic asset

The Govt prefers people who are known for their independent and forthright views to be in opposition politics so that that they can corral them in one place and shoot them like fish in a barrel. They tried in on Catherine Lim, Alex Au etc.

Astute political commentators can become the moral compass for the country, and as they have no desire to be politicians, their agenda is perceived as less skeptical. People trust good political commentators rather than politicians. That is why the Govt wants to control the press as the it is where political commentary is carried.

This country needs fair, bright and independent commentators as much as they need good opposition candidates. What we do not need are prostitutes masquerading as journalist and retired prostitutes having a change of heart.

Not jobless. Not given a permanent position after 9 years of service including a promotion. The idea is that he will be dropped the moment he over- steps.

Default Re: Cherian George: BEYOND HOUGANG - WHAT THE BY-ELECTION MEANS FOR 2016.

Bro, try this - think that you are PAP cabinet minister and in his shoes and with his eyes read the same article. I am sure that you will find the article pleasing. The language is of a high standard, the style is that of veteran and respected professional columnist, the approach covers all reasonable points which have been addressed with an objective eye.

This article is written by a former SPH Journalist who was threathened with contempt of parliament by no less than Wong Kan Seng who demanded an apology and got it. He left SPH to start his own online educational business with his sister and it did not fly. He is now employed by the Govt, his wife is employed by SPH and his brother in law is a cabinet minister.

In my view, the article is good that it covered all issues but the slant is obvious. I am sure in his heart he would rather be honest but that is not the case.

What WP faced is common to any entity that is an association of individuals attempting to contest an elections or even undertaking a business venture. Common agenda and common motivational drivers are never possible. The fact that WP has held that seat for 2 decades, continue to grow their vote base in Hougang and achieved something that was quite unexpected - A GRC. No mention is made that they brought in very credible candidates Giam, Mao and Yee. In comparison they lost 3 much much lesser lights GMS, Ti Lik and a huge liability like Gomez.

The fact that PAP only managed to gain 145 votes after what happened is a clear indictment of the resentment that PAP is facing and yet to be addressed. Obviously the PM apology was not longer part of the equation. No mention is made of Teo Chee Hean's tactical errors and conduct.

Cherian George has become the trophy wife of the PAP. Impressive, statuesque, admired and envied but behind all that he will never ever write what he believes in. A slut masquerading as a virgin.
