About 200 SMRT bus drivers refused to go to work early Monday morning and instead assembled at their dormitory in Woodlands.

The drivers, who are Chinese nationals, were unhappy about the recent pay increase that Malaysian drivers had received, reported Chinese newspaper Shin Min Daily News.

Malaysian drivers got a $275 increment and a month's bonus, while Chinese nationals were paid $75 extra without any bonus.

An SMRT human resource executive was called in to resolve the dispute but when the discussion came to a standstill, police with their riot vans were called.

"Malaysian drivers got a $275 increment and a month's bonus, while Chinese nationals were paid $75 extra without any bonus." Anyone knows what is the reason for this discrepancy in wages here?

who said STRIKE?

ST only "say refuse to work"!

Like that might as well write, SMRT held a standup tea party for 200 SMRT PRC drivers for their dedicated service, but as the caterer's cocked up, they are still waiting for their teas and not able to start work. Since the total supply of seats and standing capacity per week if not per day will match the occupied spaces per day, utilization efficiency has gone up today due to this dedication ceremony which means that the esteem SMRT management deserves a raise for their excellent optimization operations which at the same time raises moral of our foreign talent that provide great support to Singapore's efficient and worldclass transport service that does not pack people like sardines like Japan.
This is all but the product of a very capable government ( no single minister is singled out for doing good, lest the others individually file for defamation) which will increase the wealth and efficiency of Singapore while keeping things affordable!

Even our 154th media seems to be very silent on this matter. Strike started this morning and now almost 5pm still no such news reported on their websites, either on CNA or Straits Times.

That is correct. Problem is, these PRC crooks don't and won't see it that way. They have these communist mindset and think that everyone must get equal pay despite whatever abilities you have.

PRC drivers have nothing to fear

1) Singapore Gov dare not touch them as Chinese embassy will protect them. If Singapore gives trouble them they can easily go slow on the numerous projects our GLCs have in China. Just simply delay your building approval for 9 months and for some Real Estate developer (Capitaland) the window might be over.
2)Drivers can at worse, just go back to China, after getting their pay and retrenchment benefits. In fact they will likely negotiate a nice package to quietly return to China - maybe 6 month pay plus ticket back to China. SMRT will likely settle for fear of copycat strikes.
3) To PRC, Singapore is a small insignificant place. After all our pop of 5 to 6 million is not even close to one of their cities. This is a common refrain I hear.
4) If they can make $ off us of course keep quiet. But the moment there is no money to be made then face colour change.
5) Singaporeans are more afraid of authorities then them.

SMRT bus drivers who refused to go to work in talks with management
By S Ramesh | Posted: 26 November 2012 1709 hrs

SINGAPORE: Public transport provider SMRT said that it is in talks with its bus drivers who refused to go to work on Monday.

A spokesman for SMRT said 102 of the bus drivers involved were from China and their service leaders are currently in talks with SMRT management.

SMRT said earlier reports that nearly 200 bus drivers were involved were incorrect.

Channel NewsAsia understands that the bus drivers had stayed away from work as a result of unhappiness over their pay.

SMRT added that the relevant authorities have already been informed about the situation.

To me this was pretty much expected. The Malaysians had their pay raised to $275 while the PRC drivers got $75. After a period of unhappiness, the exit of a future MP and cabinet minister on this issue, an open dissent by the workers and offers of bribe to the leaders which failed etc, they worked out a formula that looked poor image wise.

They should have known that the PRC drivers would take it as a slight and loss of face.

They should prep the PRC chaps and get them to agree before going to the rest.

You open a can of worms here. It is now possible to do another Suzhou remote from Singapore and no one will no what hit them. The tactical fee to do this is cheaper than letting GLCs get some deals. What is a measly couple 100 thousand dollars?
