WAG of the day: Ellie Jenas

Wife of Tottenham midfielder Jermaine and a glamour model in her own right, today's entry fully deserves her place in Extra Time

174825hp2.jpg

Ellie Jenas - possibly the explanation for husband Jermaine Jenas' dramatic loss of on-pitch desire. Or, at least the reason he's barely been seen for the past six months. Yes, yes, I know he's been injured, but is it really an injury? Or just a convenient excuse to spend more time with Ellie?

Ah rumours, vicious rumours.

I am of course talking rubbish, Jermaine is indeed out for a good few months and had to cut short his loan spell at Aston Villa to return to Tottenham and recover. I wonder if he recalls his England days.

This may seem hard to believe but Jenas actually went to the 2006 World Cup. His girlfriend at the time, and mother of his child - Sabrina Keogh - was a part of the original WAG group at that tournament.

He is now married to Ellie and have been together for two and a half years. Some Tottenham fans may even be able to draw parallels between the timing of this relationship and his drop off in form.

Anyway, Ellie is a model, and here are some pics!

WAG of the day: Frankie Sandford

The legitimately talented The Saturdays singer enters Extra Time on Wednesday, and is regularly seen on the arm of Sunderland loanee Wayne Bridge

Mar 21, 2012 4:26:00 PM

By Jay Jaffa

174655hp2.jpg

Ready for this intro? As a member of girl group The Saturdays, Frankie Sandford was destined to be a WAG, after all boyfriend Wayne Bridge plays on a Saturday.

Nailed it.

So aside from that pretty hopeless link, it is with great delight that I can present Frankie to you, Extra Time readers. She is of course another fairly well renowned pop star - a legitimately talented WAG as opposed to the stereotypes.

Speaking of people with genuine talent - whatever happened to Wayne Bridge? At one stage he was touted as being England's left-back (or at least a very able deputy to Ashley Cole). But after his high-profile move to Chelsea from Southampton, it just never worked out for him did it? Granted he was first choice in west London in his first season but that status evaporated, much like his love for football.

174656hp2.jpg

Too much money too fast? Maybe. But his happiness with being a bit part player has clearly provided him with ample time to hunt down a WAG and you really can't knock his effort in securing Frankie Sandford.
In fact you could almost intensely dislike him for it if, for example, you had a massive fixation on Frankie. So I've heard.

Back on topic, Frankie will be known to many of you I'm sure. BUT did you know she won the 'Best Dressed' and 'Inspiration' gongs at the Glamour Women of the Year Awards? Or that she won Zoo Magazine's much coveted 'Hottest Body in the World' award? Well you do now!

Revealed: Juventus offer €19,000-a-week five-year deal in bid to trump Manchester United in Pogba tug-of-war

The French midfielder is weighing up his playing future after reaching an outline agreement with the Bianconeri's general director Giuseppe Marotta three weeks ago

Mar 21, 2012 9:15:00 AM

161099hp2.jpg

By Salvatore Landolina & Wayne Veysey

Paul Pogba celebrated his 19th birthday last Thursday uncertain where he will play his football next season but safe in the knowledge that he is at the centre of a tug-of-war involving current and would-be employers, Manchester United and Juventus.

United have made moves to convince Pogba that his future lies at Old Trafford and prevent him from making a summer switch to Serie A by re-opening contract negotiations and giving the midfielder some first-team action.

Goaldotcom can reveal for the first time the details of the offer that the Frenchman has personally received from Juventus general director Giuseppe Marotta.

It includes a five-year contract initially worth €500,000-a-year (£418,000-a-year) for each of the first two years, but with a clause that if he breaks into the first team his salary will rise to €1 million (£835,000) per annum, or €19,000-a-week (£16,000).

Sources in Italy have told Goal.com that Juventus have mapped out their specific plan for Pogba, which would involve him starting off with the youth side and then being promoted to the first team if his progress satisfies the coaching staff.

It can also be revealed that Juve will include the provision for Pogba to go out on loan to a Serie B club to further his development if this is requested by coach Antonio Conte and youth-team boss Marco Baroni.

Pogba and his representatives came to an outline agreement with Marotta over a deal starting in the summer, when his United contract expires, pending a decision from the Premier League champions.

Although Juventus were on the verge of closing a deal at the start of this month, it was not advanced to the point where the player signed a pre-contract, which he is now entitled to do with a club on the continent under Fifa transfer rules.

Should Pogba move abroad, United would not receive a transfer fee, although they would be due a nominal sum to cover ‘training compensation’ under Fifa regulations. A move within England would require a fee to be set by an independent tribunal.

There is a growing sense at Juventus that Pogba’s camp, which is headed by super agent Mino Raiola, could be using the offer on the table from the Italian giants as leverage to get a better deal from United and fast-track his progress into the first team set-up.

"The boy is still trying to make his mind up, but he knows where he should be and he has shown the potential he has got. He is a first-team player, there is no question about that"
- Sir Alex Ferguson
141265_hp_thumb.jpg

United are keen to convince the France Under-19 international, who joined the club from Le Havre in 2009, that his future is best served at Old Trafford and senior officials including Sir Alex Ferguson are trying to persuade the player to turn his back on the Juventus deal.

With his future in the balance, it is perhaps no coincidence that Pogba has made cameo substitute appearances in each of United’s last three matches – against West Brom, Athletic Bilbao and Wolves. Up to that point, his first-team playing time outside of the League Cup had amounted to 17 minutes against Stoke City on the final day of the January transfer window.

Speaking after United’s Premier League win over West Brom 10 days ago, Ferguson admitted that Pogba had yet to decide whether to stick or twist.

“The boy is still trying to make his mind up, but he knows where he should be and he has shown the potential he has got,” said the United manager. “He is a first-team player, there is no question about that.”

Ferguson is loathe to lose a young central midfielder who he rates so highly and who had initially been earmarked for the first team in 2012-13 so soon after reluctantly allowing Ravel Morrison to join West Ham.

The Scot has been outspoken about the influence of Pogba’s representatives, who he accused earlier this year of chasing the best cash offer for their client.

He said: “Matt Busby summed it up perfectly, that you don't need to chase money at a club like Manchester United, it will eventually find you. If you're good enough, you will earn money and become rich playing for us, there's no doubt about it.”

Manchester United, Liverpool & Tottenham alerted as Villarreal put Giuseppe Rossi on sale

The Italy international could be available for around €14.5m in the summer transfer window due to the Spanish club's financial problems, with Premier League clubs sounded out

Mar 23, 2012 8:10:00 AM

144626hp2.jpg

By Greg Stobart

Villarreal will sell Giuseppe Rossi in the summer and have sounded out interest from Premier League clubs including Manchester United, Liverpool and Tottenham.

Goaldotcom understands the Italy international could be available for as little as €14.5 million (£12m) at the end of the season due to Villarreal’s dire financial situation and the player’s desire to move to a bigger club.

Rossi is currently recovering from a cruciate knee injury that has kept him out of action since October last year and Villarreal fear they will now be forced to sell him on the cheap unless he recovers in time to feature for Italy at the European Championships in the summer.

Inter have been heavily linked with a move for Rossi but third parties are also trying to broker a potential return to the Premier League for the 25-year-old former United man.

Tottenham have shown strong interest in the past having had a €42m (£35m) bid rejected in January 2011 before making renewed efforts to bring him to White Hart Lane the following summer.

Spurs manager Harry Redknapp is a huge fan of the American-born forward and the Londoners may look to take advantage of Villarreal’s financial situation, which could get even worse if they are relegated from La Liga this season. They sit 17th in the table, just four points clear of safety with 10 games to play.

Rossi is understood to prefer a move to Italy because of his frustrating experience in England, when he scored just once for United and failed to find the target in 11 appearances on loan at Newcastle.

United had a first refusal buy-back clause - the option to match any bid accepted by Villarreal - inserted in the €8m (£6.6m) deal that took him from Old Trafford to El Madrigal in 2007.

There are no indications that Sir Alex Ferguson is considering re-signing Rossi but United are expected to be in the market for a striker with both Dimitar Berbatov and Michael Owen set to leave in the summer.

Liverpool’s problems in front of goal have been well documented and Rossi is a proven goalscorer, having netted 35 goals in all competitions last season.

Rossi fits the bill to solve the Reds’ goalscoring problems but much will depend on the futures of Andy Carroll and Luis Suarez, who have both been linked with moves away from Anfield.

WAG of the day: Carla Kompany

She is the Mancunian beauty whom Vincent married last year and, we have to admit, much like his on-pitch performances this season, he's done rather well

Mar 23, 2012 2:52:00 PM

By Jay Jaffa

175022hp2.jpg

The way I picture it is thus: Vincent Kompany, Manchester City captain, is laid low by a minor injury, keeping him out of crucial Premier League game after crucial game.

Vinny feels low, a tad depressed perhaps, he considers his club's chances of a maiden title - 'could we blow it?'. As worry descends over his visage, wife Carla pops her head around the corner. 'Carlitos is here'. All is well once more.

Part of the above is true I suppose. Vincent has been laid low with a calf strain and has probably been fretting about how the team will do without him. Or more likely, how the team will do with Stefan Savic in his place...

Obviously, he and Carla were not joined in a romantic menage a trois with Carlos Tevez. That would just be silly. His wife Carla is a Mancunian girl though, and was treated to a fairly spectacular wedding by all accounts.

The City and Belgium captain called in help from the London Community Gospel choir and scattered a mere thousand flowers and orchids around the castle the ceremony was held in. It sounded quite good.

Why is she WAG of the day? Well, City are the talk of the town right now. Can they keep pace with those relentless champions? Kompany is due back away at Stoke on Saturday. It all ties in seamlessly. Have some pictures...

Manchester United boss Ferguson warns Mancini he'll soon find out what 'squeaky bum time' is all about

The Old Trafford manager has sent a title warning to the Italian and says it will be a tight end to the season, especially as the Red Devils have to travel to the Etihad Stadium

Mar 25, 2012 9:02:00 AM

Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson has warned Manchester City boss Roberto Mancini that he will soon find out what ‘squeaky bum time’ is all about as the title race enters its decisive phase.

Mancini used his United counterpart's iconic phrase after his side came from behind to beat Chelsea on Wednesday, with the title rivals still to come face-to-face before the end of the season.

Sir Alex believes his side have proved in recent years that they have the right mentality when it comes to winning Premier League crowns, and said Mancini will soon find out what ‘squeaky bum time’ is, if he doesn’t know already.

He told The Sun on Sunday: “He will in the next few weeks!

“What's more important in the run-in is how the temperament is, how they hold their nerve.

"You look at it over the years. Last season we were 1-0 down at Blackburn and we needed a point to win the league.

"The energy of the team was unbelievable; it was incessant pressure until we got the penalty. We didn't bottle it and we never showed any signs of anxiety or nerves, we just kept on playing.

"Experience is important. It doesn't matter who you are, if you've been there before, it helps."

The Scot has admitted the blue side of Manchester have made huge strides forward this season, saying: “City have done exceptionally well and they've been top of the league for a long time.

"In many ways they're in the driving seat because they've got us to come to the Etihad.

"What we've got to get used to — and it's the same for every United and City fan — is there's going to be big games involving the two teams for the next decade.

"It will be semi-finals and finals, whatever, because the two teams will be at the forefront."

Redknapp tells Arsenal to 'bring it on' in race for third with Tottenham

Spurs boss insists his team are over their 'blip' after the 0-0 draw with Chelsea at Stamford Bridge and warns the Gunners that they are ready to fight until the end of the season

Mar 26, 2012 10:34:00 AM

By Aaron McLoughlin

169839hp2.jpg

Tottenham manager Harry Redknapp has warned Arsenal his side have not given up hope of finishing third in the Premier League.

The North-London club survived with a draw on Saturday against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge and the Spurs boss insists the three-point gap that has opened up between them and their London rivals can easily be overturned.

Redknapp said: “It is tough this year. Manchester City, with the money they’ve spent, are a certainty and United too.

“Arsenal have been there every year, Chelsea, and Liverpool, who you thought would get stronger, mean it was going to be even harder to make it this year.

“A month ago we were nailed on, so it would be a bigger blow if we don’t make it.

“But I don’t think third is out of reach, now. Bring it on, Ars-on!”

Tottenham look to have the easier run-in on paper but have given away a 10-point advantage in the last few weeks.

The 65 year-old said: "I enjoyed playing in the Champions League last season – but it’s not like it’s been part of my life or part of Tottenham’s life. They’ve not been used to it.

“Whatever happens, you need to improve every year. If Tottenham want to do it again next year, we have to improve.

“These top teams are not going to stand still, they are going to improve their teams. Man City will, and United and Arsenal have made plans to bring big players in.”

Mario Balotelli's mum moves to Manchester to patch up relationship

The Manchester City striker's Ghanaian mother is renting a £550 per month flat in Wythenshawe in the hope of rekindling a relationship with the son she gave away

Mar 26, 2012 10:00:00 AM

172797hp2.jpg

It's rare at Extra Time that we pull on the emotional heartstrings but a report by The Sun has given us little choice this week.

Mario Balotelli's mother Rose Barwuah has moved to a house in Wythenshawe - just outside Manchester - to be closer to the son she was advised to give away.

This is not the first time Balotelli's real parents have reached out to the multi-million pound Manchester City striker. He rejected their advances initially, claiming they were only interested in him because of his fame and riches.

But that has since changed and he has reportedly been seen driving to the house in Wythenshawe in his white Bentley and even spotted in the local pub.

111638hp2.jpg

"Not here for the money? Nice try."

One of Mrs Barwuah's neighbours told The Sun:"Rose is a religious woman who goes to church every Sunday. All she has ever wanted was to rebuild their relationship and now it looks like her prayers have been answered."

Balotelli was given away at the age of two to his adopted Italian parents and eventually gained Italian citizenship at the age of 18.

Now 21-years-old, Balotelli is one of the most famous faces in football. He also has a younger brother by the name of Enoch who is with his mother Rose in England. He was recently reported to have had trials at both Stoke and Sunderland in the past few months.

Balotelli's older sister Abigail, who lives in Milan, said of her mother's move to Manchester: "My mum will be closer to Mario and Enoch but I will stay here."

It seems like a genuine effort from Rose and her husband Thomas to fix the problems with their son. Giuseppe Toninelli, the owner of the factory that Thomas has worked in for 15 years confirmed this, saying:

"He [Thomas] has left. He was going to Ghana before joining the family in Manchester.

"I think they are all trying to patch up their differences."

It would be rude of us not to keep an eye on this one. Maybe they'll celebrate by setting off a firework or two?

Extra Time: David Beckham reportedly auctioning off £500k car collection

The LA Galaxy midfielder has been spotted taking to the streets on the back of a custom built motorbike instead of behind the wheel of one of his legion of motors

Mar 27, 2012 10:47:00 AM

168267hp2.jpg

Is it possible that the Beckham's have run out of money? No, probably not. But that still won't explain why they are reportedly set to sell five cars from their impressive fleet.

The Sun reports that 36-year-old David Beckham has decided to sell two Bentleys, a BMW 645, a Range Rover Sport and his Lamborghini Gallardo, which are all stationed at his estate in Sawbridgeworth.

The Lamborghini alone is worth £170,000 or, in Beckham language, about ten days wages...

A friend of Goldenballs said: "David's collection is amazing and each of these vehicles is worth a fortune.

"They are hardly used and are kept in prize condition — but David sees little point in them just mothballing in the UK and it's not practical to ship them to America.

"They will be sold off for other enthusiasts to enjoy. Their value easily exceeds half a million but their real worth will be the association with Becks."

He should be a salesman. Anyway, expect to see Becks pictured riding this no-nonsense motorbike around LA in future.

Torres' Chelsea future undecided

Fernando Torres is finally being treated in the way he "deserves" at Chelsea, according to the £50million man's management company.

Bahia Internacional's Antonio Sanz echoed the sentiments of Blues striker Salomon Kalou, who this week claimed his own resurgence was down to the faith placed in him by caretaker boss Roberto Di Matteo. Kalou claimed sacked manager Andre Villas-Boas refused to pick him because he had not signed a new contract, and Sanz has suggested Torres was also not handled correctly by the Portuguese.

Spain striker Torres is beginning to show glimpses of the talent that saw Chelsea make him the most expensive player ever transferred between British clubs when they signed him from Liverpool. He has started four of the Blues' seven matches since Di Matteo took charge, having played second fiddle to Didier Drogba under Villas-Boas.

Sanz told pagineromaniste.com: "With Villas-Boas, he was not considered, but the arrival of Di Matteo on the bench has seen him return to have the trust that he deserves." Having failed to find the net for five months under Villas-Boas, Torres took just three games to end his miserable run in front of goal following Di Matteo's elevation.

He also maintained his fine record of assists in Tuesday night's Champions League quarter-final first leg win at Benfica. Sanz added: "He played a great match in the Champions League in Lisbon, assisting the winning goal for Kalou." There is a long way to go before Torres can be said to have been worth the money spent on him, especially as there is still a discernible lack of confidence in front of goal.

While that remains the case, the 28-year-old will continue to be linked with a move away from Stamford Bridge and Sanz hinted how he fared for the rest of the season would influence his longer-term future. "We'll evaluate his future in the coming months," Sanz said. "Fernando has another four years on his contract at Chelsea and the situation there has changed for him."

Roma, who were this season bought by an American consortium, and Juventus have been linked with Torres. Sanz said: "We know the new American project at Roma and the philosophy of manager Luis Enrique, but if Roma want Fernando, they will have to talk with Chelsea. "The Italian championship is of a good standard, but there are currently no discussions with Roma or Juventus."

Kalou had no doubt Torres would prove a success at Chelsea, saying after Tuesday's game: "That's the second goal that he gave me. "Against Leicester also, he gave me an assist, so there is a good understanding between us. "I'm glad he's playing, he's enjoying. "For me, he's still the striker he used to be and he just has to keep doing the hard work and the best is to come."

Torres' fate could ultimately be decided by who Chelsea recruit as Villas-Boas' permanent successor, as well as who they sign in the transfer market. Reports today suggest Di Matteo, who has won five and drawn one of his seven games in charge, has impressed owner Roman Abramovich so much that the Russian was considering handing him the reins.

Pep Guardiola is said to be Abramovich's number one target, amid suggestions soundings have been taken, but luring the Barcelona boss away could prove impossible. It has been claimed Abramovich would not entertain a return for Jose Mourinho, while France manager Laurent Blanc has been touted as a possible alternative. With Drogba and Kalou looking set to leave this summer, at least one new striker will also be needed to provide competition for Torres.

Porto's Hulk, Atletico Madrid's Radamel Falcao and Newcastle's Demba Ba are all reported targets.
Drogba, meanwhile, is likely to return to lead the line in Saturday's Barclays Premier League game at Aston Villa, with Di Matteo set to continue to rotate his squad in a manner that appears to be meeting with their approval. Defender Branislav Ivanovic remains a doubt with a thigh injury.
