In Pictures: The outrageous Liverpool-themed wedding

As Merseyside gears up for the 217th derby on Tuesday night, two members of the Singapore fan club have tied the knot in an incredible Reds styled ceremony

By Jay Jaffa

Liverpool and Everton take to the Anfield pitch on Tuesday night for the 217th Merseyside derby and you can be sure the Singapore supporters club will be watching and cheering onKenny Dalglish's side.

Harry Han and Eileen Siaw tied the knot at the end of February having known each other through the official Liverpool Fan Club for over ten years.

The Vice-President and Secretary of the fan club admitted to not being particularly fond of one another originally.

"I must say we didn't like each other very much!" Mr Han said.

7th in the S-League | Hougang United share remarkable similarities with Liverpool

But despite their initial apprehension, the mutual love of the Anfield club brought the two together and resulted in this obscenely over-the-top themed wedding.

The ceremony held at the Regent Hotel in Singapore asked guests to forget tradition and turn up donned in their favourite team's shirt. Though it was largely dominated by Liverpool jerseys, a couple of Manchester United and Real Madrid representatives were spotted.

Nonetheless, if there was any doubt, the couple walked down the aisle to a rendition of "You'll Never Walk Alone" - that charming traditional wedding tune.

The Hans have also suitably decided to spend their honeymoon in Liverpool with the target of attending the Premier League game against Fulham on 14th April.

Extra Time: Top five Liverpool & Everton WAGs

Tuesday night's derby is set to be the 217th between the red and blue sides of Merseyside and we look at the women who ensure that the players are fully prepared for battle

Mar 13, 2012 2:30:00 PM

By Jay Jaffa

173025hp2.jpg

Anfield will host the 217th Merseyside derby on Tuesday night, with just two points separatingLiverpool and Everton - but while the players do battle on the pitch, we can take the opportunity to look at the women behind the stars off it.

The great Canadian novelist Robertson Davies once said: "Many a promising career has been wrecked by marrying the wrong sort of woman."

But that is not a notion that the likes of midfielder Steven Gerrard would subscribe to. His long-term relationship with Alex Curran (pictured above left) has been the foundation for his magnificent Liverpool and England career - and is indicative of the importance of the WAG on such high-tension occasions as a fiercely-contested local derby.

Allow me, then, to introduce you to the WAGs of five of Tuesday night's key players.

Lara Binet & Marouane Fellaini

173018hp2.jpg

It's hard to believe that Everton ever had £15 million to cough up on a transfer but Fellaini's move to the Toffees in 2008 marked the club's largest transfer.

What the management didn't realise is that, although Fellaini came with the Ebony Shoe (Belgium's award to the best African or player of African origin), he would soon develop an homage to Sideshow Bob's afro and attach Lara Binet to his arm. Now that's an image.

Fellaini won the club's Young Player of the Year award in his debut season and also has previous in Merseyside derbies, receiving a season-ending tackle from Sotiris Krygiakos in February 2010. But, with the Greek defender now residing in Sunderland, Fellaini will be free to wreak havoc and return triumphant to the arms of Miss Binet.

Alex & Steven Gerrard

173024hp2.jpg

They seem like old-stagers now but Stevie Gerrard and Alex Curran were part of the original WAG scene - the infamous gaggle of girls in Germany for World Cup 2006 that helped coin the WAG phrase and, indeed, the phenomenon it became.

Over the years you could almost guarantee that Liverpool's 31-year-old captain would be involved in the drama of any Merseyside derby but Gerrard has extra reason to contribute on Tuesday night.

His season has been marred by injuries - he has featured in just 12 Premier League games so far - but the talismanic midfielder's late cameo at Sunderland should mean that he's in line for a start at Anfield.

Stacey Miller & Andy Carroll

173022hp2.jpg

Big ol' Andy Carroll has found love in little Stacey Miller. The £35m target man would probably forgive me for saying that he's likely to have had more success off the pitch this season than on it.

But cast your mind back to October and you'll recall Carroll wheeling away in delight at Goodison Park. Yes, the man that couldn't score for toffee opened his account against the Toffees.

Things didn't really pick up after that, to be fair, and he has just three league goals all season - though, looking at Liverpool's other goalscorers, he's not actually done too bad. If he scores tonight, beers on Andy? Sure.

Sofia Balbi & Luis Suarez

173017hp2.jpg

The Uruguayan striker has had a pretty low-key season for Liverpool. There have been no major incidents or controversies to blot his copybook and fans of both teams will no doubt be looking forward to watching him take to the field at Anfield.

But wait, what's this? Ok, time to be serious: Suarez has cast a dark cloud over the Premier League this year - whether it was down to his words, actions or neither, controversy has followed him.

At home, helping to preserve the striker's sanity is Sofia Balbi, his wife. The couple have been seen roaming Liverpool's streets since his move from Ajax and will hope to do so with heads held high should the red side of Merseyside emerge victorious.

Laura & Tim Howard

173019hp2.jpg

Ah the lovely Laura Howard. Married to Everton and United States goaltender extraordinaire Tim.

I have a special place in my heart for Tim Howard, actually. His career has been a real success story, if you ignore the Manchester United failure. He has always been revered at Goodison Park ever since moving from the Red Devils but it seems that this season has seen him garner league-wide acclaim for his talents.

You might even argue that he is the new Jussi Jaaskelainen - you know, everyone's favourite unfashionable goalkeeper. Still, at 33, Howard has many more years of giving and, as Evertonians will hope, Merseyside penalty saves up his sleeve.

In Pictures: Mario Balotelli flees to Milan with girlfriend Raffaella Fico

The Manchester City striker opted to head to Italy in the wake of his club's shock loss at Swansea and showed surprisingly good taste with his choice of car and companion

Mar 14, 2012 12:00:00 PM

By Jay Jaffa

173186hp2.jpg

Mario Balotelli made a dash to Milan following Manchester City's defeat to Swansea on Sunday to spend some time with gorgeous girlfriend Raffaella Fico.

The rebellious Italian will presumably return to Manchester in time for Thursday night's Europa League tie with Sporting but could you blame him if he skipped it?

The 21-year-old has reportedly been with Miss Fico since she split from Cristiano Ronaldo - proof if it were needed that she is a truly high-class WAG.

173190hp2.jpg

Raffaella Fico in 'come and get me footballer' pose

Fico shot to fame via the Italian version of Big Brother - the sure fire way of achieving some sort of celebrity. From here she was the rumoured mother of Ronaldo's first born before linking up with Balotelli.

She has spoken in the past of her relationships: "Apart from Balotelli, I’ve only been with Cristiano Ronaldo. And I can assure you that Mario is much better."

I think she is referring to his driving skills...

But after Balotelli was photographed leaving a Manchester strip club in the early hours before a Premier League game against Bolton, she added: "For me, he can go to a strip club, if he does nothing wrong, with friends, but I have to say that at the end he always comes back to me because I am his favourite."

A beautiful and forgiving woman?

"She gives me peace of mind and is understanding when I mess up," Mario said.

No wonder Roberto Mancini is pushing the two to get married.

173184hp2.jpg

My rules | Mario chose to park this old banger in front of a 'no parking' sign

It works both ways though? That's how a healthy relationship should be (so I've read...).

Not in Balotelli's world: "If she went to a male strip club, I'd be very p***** off."

I suppose you can't argue with a man who nonchalantly paid off a £250,000 fine for said strip club incident.

The Balotelli mystique took a hit thanks to a recent interview where he denied almost every story that had been reported in the press of his famed madcap antics.

Had he paid a tramp £1000? No. Did he dress up as Santa and hand money to people in Manchester? Never. What about taking the boy to school to confront his bully? Not a chance. It was the kind of debunking you just didn't want to hear.

However, we were treated to a new Balotelli quirk, though as a professional athlete it's hardly the most endearing. He smokes. Yep, like a handful of Italian footballers, Mario has taken to the ill-advised habit. And it all comes from Mancini - who KNOWS about this!

"If he were my son, I would give him a kick up the arse but he is not my son," Mancini said.

"There are players in Italy who smoke and some over here but I don't think he smokes a lot – maybe five or six a day."

That sounds a lot to me!

Abramovich should follow Manchester United & Barcelona blueprint in building a club - LMA chairman Howard Wilkinson

Russian oligarch told to take heed of long-term strategies at the reigning La Liga and Premier League champions but believes Manchester City are already copying their neighbours

Mar 14, 2012 9:10:00 AM

54750hp2.jpg

By Rob Stewart

Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich has come under attack from the League Managers’ Association over his hire-and-fire managerial policy at Stamford Bridge.

As Chelsea stand on the brink of elimination from the Champions League, the Russian billionaire has been criticised by LMA chairman Howard Wilkinson for sacking Andre Villas-Boas after less than nine months at the club. “Clearly, it seems to me that Roman Abramovich is not aware of the difference between having a successful team and building a successful club,”

“The evidence shows that the successful clubs – ones that have been constructed in a planned, long-term and strategic way and which have a vision of where they want to go and know how they want to get there.” Wilkinson continued: “What happens is that the product of that is they continue to produce successful teams. The lesson is that if you want to be winning things then history shows that is the way that you have got to go.

“To see that you just have to look at two clubs at the moment – Manchester United who have been the most successful club in England over the last 15 years and Barcelona who have also enjoyed sustained success.” Wilkinson, who guided Leeds United to the League Championship in 1992, called upon Abramovich to learn from long-term models at Barcelona, United and Arsenal.

“Manchester United have been built by [Sir] Alex Ferguson and those above him who have bought into his vision for the club,” Wilkinson added. “Barcelona have been building a culture now and therefore a club for a decade. Pep Guardiola was brought up with that culture and when he was asked to become manager he built on it.

“Certainly managers who have the capacity to look long-term such as Ferguson and Guardiola and also Arsene Wenger also have an enormous amount to contribute to the development of a successful club. “I don’t know Jose Mourinho inside-out but from the outside looking in it would seem that he had that capacity but clearly that wasn’t part of the deal at Chelsea and that is why he left.”

Wilkinson said Manchester City had taken a leaf out of United’s book despite massive investment in new players from the Abu Dhabi royal family. “Bringing in good players into the building is only part of the solution,” Wilkinson said. “If you want continuous success, those good players have to be brought into a building that clearly has a long-term and that clearly has a vision where it is heading and how it is going to get there and those players have to buy into that.

“I don’t know for certain and we will see but Manchester City seem to be getting their head around that one. The way they have been going about their business would indicate that the strong people within that football club and the leaders within that football club understand that and they know that is the biggest solution to any problems that come along.

“There seems to be a conviction at Manchester City that the club grows and stands for something and that the club then becomes bigger than any individuals within it and individuals have to go along with the direction that the club has decided it is going to travel along. “Somebody once said that copying successfully is genius. Everybody is looking to learn and if you can learn from your neighbours who has been there, seen it, done it, well you would be a fool not to follow their example.”

The former Football Association technical director also backed former Porto manager Villas-Boas to bounce back from his sacking. “Andre Villas-Boas will recover from his experience at Chelsea and he will probably be a stronger and better manager for it,” Wilkinson said. “He was just one pawn in the story that is Chelsea Football Club. But there are a lot more managers who have been treated worse than him and there are a lot of managers who are in a lot worse position than him and they work just as hard."

“When we enter management we know for sure that setbacks are a certainty. He is one victim in all this but the biggest victim is the football club and those genuine Chelsea supporters who have more than just a passing fancy in a winning team.”

Ferguson and Mancini join Wenger in hospital to treat European heartbreak

Mar 16, 2012 12:45:00 PM

15778261ae43ad7c9c716afbcba61172481074e2.jpg

Following Arsenal's valiant, yet unsuccessful, efforts to defeat AC Milan against the odds in the Champions League round of 16 last week and Chelsea's heroics against Napoli on Wednesday, the onus was firmly placed upon both Manchester clubs a day later to make similarly impressive comebacks, albeit in the Europa League.

However, it was not to be as United were alarmingly outclassed by Athletic Bilbao, crumbling to a 5-3 aggregate defeat at the San Mames, while City did not fare much better despite beating Sporting Lisbon 3-2 on the night. Furthermore, both Fergie and Mancini will now be consigned to joining Arsene Wenger in commiserating their European exits, rather than Roberto Di Matteo, basking his glory.

WAGs: Victoria Beckham, Sylvie van der Vaart & Yolanthe Cabau in quotes

Sylvie van der Vaart flits between London and Germany, Wesley Sneijder is still loved up and Victoria Beckham makes sure we know David Beckham is cooler than all of us

173379hp2.jpg

At Extra Time, we like to detail the lives of various WAGs around the globe and so it's time to introduce WAGs in Quotes, your daily stop-off for all the musings of the game's wives and girlfriends.

First up, we turn to the lovely Sylvie Van der Vaart, wife of Tottenham midfielder Rafael. The Dutch stunner is one of the few upper echelon WAGs who is not solely famous for being on the arm of a footballer.

In fact, Sylvie is quite a renowned television personality in Germany where she hosts their equivalent of Strictly Come Dancing - 'Let's Dance'. She was also announced as the face of European lingerie brand Hunkemoller recently with Rafa announcing his approval: "I’m so proud of her. The things she achieves, it’s all so special!"

Tweeting on location, Sylvie tweeted:

"5.5 million viewers Lets Dance! Can't wait for the next show, proud of all the amazing dance couples!"

173378hp2.jpg

This was followed with news that she was returning to London for a modelling shoot:

"Düsseldorf Airport , flight to London! Today another campaign shoot, and then going home! Yay! lots of kisses"

Heading to Europe, Wesley Sneijder's year has been a bit underwhelming. His season has been stop-start at Inter and Tuesday night saw his team dumped out of the Champions League by Marseille.

Sneijder missed the sole gilt-edged chance to score and so his disappointing campaign ambles towards the finish line. Despite the on-pitch problems, he can at least depend on his wife Yolanthe Cabau.

173380hp2.jpg

Accompanying a picture of Wesley and their son, Yolanthe tweeted:

"I love these 2 men so much!!!"

Lucky man.

Lastly, the most famous of all WAGs, Victoria Beckham tweeted an amusing picture of a bib she had bought for their daughter Harper. The message was spot on:

"My dad is cooler than your dad."

Correct. I have no argument. And that, good people, is today's WAGs in Quotes.

Bruce: Manchester United's Evans has stepped up in Vidic absence

The 51-year-old praises Johnny Evans for filling the gap left by the injured Nemanja Vidic and thinks that Manchester United will not run away with the title like previous seasons

Mar 16, 2012 6:00:00 PM

By Tom Bradley

Steve Bruce has heaped praise on Jonny Evans for his displays this year at the heart ofManchester United’s defence. Evans has had to step up this season given the gap left by Nemanja Vidic, who suffered a serious knee injury in their Champions League defeat against Basel. While the rise of some of United’s young stars such as Phil Jones and Chris Smalling has caught the eye, the 51-year-old believes Evans deserves the same recognition.

“Of course, they have missed Vidic but Jonny Evans has now played over 20 league games and has very quietly done extremely well,” Bruce told Yahoo. “He's only 23, he's played in big games and has handled himself brilliantly. “Chris Smalling and Phil Jones have got all the headlines because they've had a meteoric rise, but I think Jonny Evans has done particularly well in filling the gap left by Vidic.”

Bruce also praised Rio Ferdinand for adding stability to the Old Trafford defence this season throughout Vidic's lay-off. He added: “It's also important that Rio Ferdinand has come back and just given them that stability. “I think defenders get better with age. Even though you might lose that half-yard of pace it gets easier.

“The art of defending lies in your concentration levels, and that is something which gets easier with age. “It's particularly important at United, where you are constantly on the attack and you need to stay switched on even when you might not have too much to do.” The former Sunderland boss also spoke of United's excellent run over the past two months given the difficult games they played, and now it is Manchester City’s turn to try and catch the current Premier League champions.

“They've had a wonderful run, and over January and February they have stayed the course,” he added. “They had a tough run of games with matches against Arsenal, Chelsea and Tottenham, and they have come through that. “Now it will be interesting to see Manchester City's reaction. It is the first time they have been behind in five months.

Bruce felt though that United will not run away with the title as they have done in previous years, and City will take them right to the wire for the title. “In the past, once United have got in front, they have stayed there over the last eight or 10 games. “In the past they have run away with it and won the league by 10 or 12 points, but I don't think that will happen this time. “From a neutral standpoint, let's hope City stay with them.”

Premier League weekend team news

A round-up of team news ahead of this weekend's Premier League fixtures.

Fulham vs Swansea

Fulham midfielder Steve Sidwell has had to have another operation on a hernia injury, putting his rehabilitation back and ruling him out for around four weeks. Aaron Hughes returns to the squad after missing last weekend's defeat to Aston Villa with a calf complaint but Zdenek Grygera is out for the rest of the season with a knee injury and Orlando Sa is out for at least three or four weeks with hamstring trouble.

Winger Nathan Dyer is suspended and although Swansea have no fresh injury concerns, Andrea Orlandi and Kemy Agustien will not figure. Orlandi is back in training after a hamstring tear, while Agustien is likely to miss the rest of the season after ankle surgery.

Wigan vs West Brom

Wigan boss Roberto Martinez will check the fitness of striker Hugo Rodallega and midfielder Albert Crusat. Rodallega picked up a knock to his knee in the draw at Norwich while Crusat injured a toe in training. Goalkeeper Michael Pollitt (shoulder) and midfielder David Jones (knee) are still sidelined.

Craig Dawson and Gabriel Tamas are vying to replace suspended West Brom defender Jonas Olsson. Right-back Billy Jones is available after a hamstring injury but Peter Odemwingie (calf) has only an outside chance of being fit, with Shane Long, Somen Tchoyi and Simon Cox in contention to replace the striker.

Newcastle vs Norwich

Newcastle boss Alan Pardew will check the fitness of Cheick Tiote and Danny Simpson. Midfielder Tiote picked up a hamstring problem in Monday's defeat at Arsenal, while full-back Simpson suffered an adductor strain in the same game. Peter Lovenkrands (thigh) and fellow long-term absentees Leon Best and Sammy Ameobi (both knee), Steven Taylor (Achilles) and Sylvain Marveaux (groin) are still missing.

Norwich expect to have midfielder Jonny Howson available again after illness but defenders Daniel Ayala (hamstring) and Marc Tierney (groin) are still recovering full match fitness and striker James Vaughan (hamstring) is another still unavailable for first-team selection.

Wolves vs Man Utd

Wolves caretaker manager Terry Connor has no fresh injury problems. Midfielder Karl Henry hopes to return from his hamstring injury for next week's match at Norwich, while Connor has to decide whether to recall skipper Roger Johnson, with Wolves having leaked nine goals in three games since he dropped the defender.

United hope Wayne Rooney shrugs off the knock suffered during the Europa League loss to Athletic Bilbao. The striker stayed down following a challenge by Jon Aurtenetxe, although he was able to complete the game and score. Paul Scholes is set to return in midfield and Phil Jones hopes to have recovered from flu.

Fabrice Muamba remains in a critical condition in intensive care after suffering a cardiac arrest during Bolton's FA Cup sixth-round tie against Tottenham on Saturday.

The club also confirmed the 23-year-old's heart had started working at the London Chest Hospital following prolonged resuscitation after he collapsed in the 41st minute at White Hart Lane.

A statement issued jointly by Bolton and the London Chest Hospital read: "Fabrice Muamba remains in a critical condition in intensive care in the Heart Attack Centre at The London Chest Hospital.

"Fabrice was admitted to the hospital yesterday evening after collapsing at White Hart Lane, where he sustained a cardiac arrest during the FA Cup quarter-final against Tottenham Hotspur.

"Fabrice received prolonged resuscitation at the ground and on route to The London Chest Hospital, where his heart eventually started working.

"As is normal medical practice, Fabrice remains anaesthetised in intensive care and will be for at least 24 hours.

"His condition continues to be closely monitored by the cardiac specialists at the hospital. No further updates are planned at this time."

Bolton manager Owen Coyle, who accompanied the midfielder to hospital alongside striker Kevin Davies and club chairman Phil Gartside, thanked the wave of support for Muamba.

"Fabrice's family have asked me to pass on their thanks for the many, many kind messages of support from not only Bolton fans but also fans from clubs across the country and abroad," he said.

"All our thoughts and prayers are for Fabrice and his family. The family would also like to thank the media for respecting their privacy at this time."

Earlier on Sunday morning, Coyle had given an update on Muamba's condition.

"Fabrice is critically ill. The next 24 hours are going to be absolutely crucial," he said.

"We've obviously been inundated with people wishing him well and we hope that if everybody can pray strongly tonight that Fabrice is able to recover.

"It's very serious. There's not getting away from that. He's critically ill and God willing he makes it through."

Juventus set to make sensational summer move to sign Chelsea misfit Torres

The Bianconeri are keen to add some fresh blood to their attack this summer, and are looking into the possibilities of luring the Spaniard to Turin

Serie A giants Juventus are hopeful of luring Chelsea striker Fernando Torres to Turin in the summer transfer window.

The Bianconeri are looking to add a high-profile name to their attack ahead of the 2012-13 campaign, and have previously been linked with Real Madrid forward Gonzalo Higuain. However, the 28-year-old Torres is Juve's primary target.

Sporting director Fabio Paratici has already contacted Margarita Garay, the player's former agent and still a member of his entourage, to discuss a potential summer move.

Torres joined Chelsea from Liverpool in January 2011 for a fee of €58.5 million, but the striker has never really been able to live up to the high expectations at Stamford Bridge.

Therefore, the Premier League side could opt to offload the former Atletico Madrid star this summer if he fails to find top form in the remainder of the 2011-12 campaign, and Juventus are keen to lure him to Serie A.

General director Giuseppe Marotta wants to see whether Torres has what it takes to succeed in the Italian top flight before signing him on a permanent basis though, and therefore wants to sign the attacker on a one-year loan deal, with an option to make the move permanent at the end of his initial spell.

However, the Spain international ended a 25-hour goalscoring drought at the weekend in Chelsea's 5-2 FA Cup win over Leicester City, and the Blues are unlikely to sell Torres this summer if he returns to top form in the remaining two months of the season.

After racking up a grand total of 24 hours and 41 minutes of time on the pitch without a goal Fernando Torres finally brought an end to his barren run yesterday, scoring a brace to help ease Chelsea past Leicester into the semi-finals of the FA Cup.

Speaking after the Blues 5-2 victory Torres spoke of the relief he felt to finally get back on the score sheet, stating: 'I needed those goals. I was working so hard to get them. In the last month the team is much better. We have more commitment and we've shown in the last four games we want to finish the season well.'

The Spaniard also supplied two assists during the victory and gave credit to his team mates and new boss Roberto Di Matteo for keeping faith in him during a difficult period for him at the club.

'I think maybe this season I am playing at a very good level but I was not scoring goals in this period and the job of the striker is to score goals. So if you don't do it then the people think you are playing badly but for me the main thing is the support of the people.'

'They have all been with me,' he added. 'The team-mates, the staff. I feel the confidence of the manager now and obviously it is a good time for me and for Chelsea.'

Di Matteo, who has won all four games since taking over from Andre Villas-Boas a fortnight ago gave praise to the hard work that Torres has put in at the club.

'I think the whole team, the club and supporters are happy for Torres,' said Di Matteo. 'He works so hard for the team, he is a great team player. You get rewarded when you work hard in life and I think we are all happy that he helped us win.'
