A Singapore Airlines Airbus A380 superjumbo is seen grounded at Zurich Airport

Singapore Airlines (SIA) has defended the reliability of the Airbus A380, despite recent incidents involving two of the airline's superjumbos.
"The A380 has had one of the smoothest introductions to our fleet compared to our previous experience of entry into service of new aircraft," says an SIA spokesman.
An A380 operated by the Star Alliance carrier is temporarily grounded at Zurich Airport after a rudder control system fault was encountered before a scheduled departure for Singapore yesterday.
Engineers are still looking into the problem and it is not known yet when the aircraft will be cleared for flying, says the spokesman.
On 31 January, smoke was detected in the lavatory on another A380 while the aircraft was on a flight to Singapore from Hong Kong. The aircraft landed without incident, and ground crews later found charred wiring in the aircraft's cargo hold. SIA had said there appears to have been "a short in one of the generator cables".
Referring to the incidents, SIA's spokesman says: "Technical issues do crop up from time to time, which is not unexpected even of aircraft types that have been in service for decades. It has to be noted that the A380 is the world's first superjumbo aircraft, as well as the first aircraft with a clean sheet design in a long while, so any operational disruptions that occur will naturally garner more attention."
SIA operates 11 A380s and has eight more on order, according to Flightglobal's ACAS database. The airline has carried more than 4.7 million passengers on more than 12,000 flights on its A380 fleet as of today, says the spokesman.
"In the greater scheme of things, the aircraft's dispatch reliability is comparable to any aircraft currently in service. We continue to work with Airbus on ways to improve the operational performance of the A380," he adds.

Same for DBS recent "Crash" on their mainframe, the whole IT was outsourced to IBM, in turn they hire FT. Well done DBS and IBM.

What is wrong with an aircraft being grounded? This happens all the time with all aircraft type. No need to make a mountain out of a molehill.

I avoid airlines Tiger because of all the bad things that have been reported. You got to be crazy to risk spoiling your holiday or business trip flying with them:rolleyes:

I've also avoided SIA because they overcharge when you get the tix from Spore. On my last trip with SIA I was also not too happy with their service.:(

Maybe if your a SIA frequent flyer you get better service. However I remember flying business with them & they dinged me for baggage being overweight. I've heard similar complaints from others. Never had such issues when flying with Air Canada, Cathay, Emirates, etc

Now there are questions of safety with SIA. Who wants to risk their lifes so that SIA can have a healthy bottomline:confused:

A380 is a relatively new plane and its a revolutionary plane - for sure, they will have lots of bugs to be ironed out.

its development to fruition has been beset by problems and overbudget....it was supposed to be launched in 2005 but it was postponed until 2 years later.

And SIA was the launch customer - meaning, it will kenna all the problems first and other airlines learn from their experience.

yes, its service level has dipped but still people fly SIA. One thing though, if you die on a SIA flight, the compensation will be highest amongst all airlines...they have set the precedent for the SQ006 incident.

hahaha...for those who know or have watched documentaries on the development and production of A380, besides the technical problems, politics was a main contributing problem. There was fierce rivaly between France and Germany to ensure "fair" allocation of works etc...
The first plane body was build in 2 parts...1 in France and the other in Germany.
when they assembled the 2 parts, they found that all the interconnect cables don't matched.
Previously the parent company EADS also has Chairman and Co-Chairman just for political reasons.

Those in the industry were simply amazed at the fact that the A380 could survive the engine blow-out on the recent Qantas incident. If you were to see the damage to the wings, it is hard not to admire the resilience of this aircraft.

Is that why some of the passengers chose to sue SIA in the US courts instead of in Spore:confused:

Another reason I choose not to fly SIA is because I'm a Sporean & not some angmo:rolleyes:
