La Liga: Espanyol 2 Sevilla 2

8 December 2012

298293header.jpg

Javier Aguirre was denied his first win as Espanyol manager after Alvaro Negredo's 90th-minute equaliser for Sevilla.

Aguirre was moments from a perfect start to his Espanyol tenure when the Spain international found space at the back post to prod home Jesus Navas' teasing cross to pinch a 2-2 draw.

The home side started the day bottom of La Liga but went ahead early when Verdu was brought down in the box and cooly slotted the penalty on13 minutes.

Sevilla replied with a penalty after Coke was brought down in the box by Christian Stuani.

Ivan Rakitic made no mistake with the conversion but the visitors were stung by Jose Antonio Reyes' sending off shortly before half-time for a second yellow.

Espanyol substitute Simao took advantage four minutes after the restart with a close-range header to make it 2-1 to the home side.

Espanyol move off the bottom with the draw but are two points away from safety while Sevilla stay in 10th.

La Liga wrap: Oezil saves Real Madrid

9 December 2012

298390header.jpg

Real Madrid twice came from behind to emerge 3-2 winners over an impressive Valladolid side on Saturday, while Malaga hammered Granada 4-0.

Angolan striker Manucho bagged a brace but it was Madrid midfielder Mesut Oezil who stole the show with the match-winning goal.

Madrid have been poor on the road so far this season and it seemed as though their woes would continue as some awful marking from a corner enabled the hosts to take a seventh-minute lead.

Drawn to the ball, Sergio Ramos left Manucho free in the area and the former Manchester United striker pounced on Alvaro Rubio's pass to open the scoring.

However, five minutes later Valladolid became the culprits of some dire defending themselves as Jose Callejon latched onto a short back pass from Omar Ramos. Combined with a slip from Marc Valiente the Madrid man was able to lay the ball on for Karim Benzema, who slotted in a simple equaliser.

Jose Mourinho's side continued to press, but their good work was undone at the midway point of the first half.

Patrick Ebert's corner was met by Manucho who out-jumped Ramos at the near post to head his side back into the lead on 22 minutes.

Madrid continued in search of an equaliser and their persistence finally paid off on the stroke of half-time as Oezil found Benzema. The striker held the ball before rolling it back to the German and his effort squeezed under goalkeeper Daniel Hernandez and into the net.

Mourinho introduced some fresh legs, one of them being Croatian midfielder Luka Modric and it seemed to galvanise his side with 18 minutes remaining.

A cheap free kick was given away by Henrique Sereno and Oezil took a short run up before bending a majestic effort towards the top corner which crashed in off the bar to make it 3-2.

And that proved enough, as Madrid picked up the three points and move to within two points of second-placed city rivals Atletico, who are scheduled to play Deportivo La Coruna on Sunday.

Surprise-packets Malaga climbed up to fourth in La Liga following their 4-0 drubbing of Granada.

After a storming start to the season, Manuel Pellegrini's side had won just one of their past six league games before Saturday's match but that all changed thanks to goals from Joaquin, Javier Saviola, Ignacio Camacho and Roque Santa Cruz.

Elsewhere on Saturday, Roberto Soldado's 56th-minute goal was enough to down Osasuna 1-0 as Ernesto Valverde's reign as Valencia manager begin on a winning note, while Real Sociedad and Getafe played out a 1-1 draw.

La Liga wrap: Messi magic sparks Barca

10 December 2012

298491header.jpg

Lionel Messi rewrote the record books to lead Barcelona to a 2-1 win over Betis, while Radamel Falcao scored five goals for Atletico Madrid.

The Argentine etched his name in football history with his 85th and 86th goals for club and country in 2012, breaking the 40-year-old record for most goals in a calendar year set by Gerd Muller in 1972.

Messi's brace put Barcelona two goals up after 25 minutes, but it was far from smooth sailing for the Catalans, who were given a thorough examination by a spirited home side that pulled a goal back through Ruben Castro shortly before the break.

The attacking pressure from Betis saw them create a number of opportunities in the second half, hitting the woodwork twice, but Barca managed to ride their luck and grind out the victory.

The only bad news for Barcelona was the hamstring injury that key midfielder Cesc Fabregas picked up.

Fabregas was withdrawn during the first half and the club has confirmed he will miss up to four weeks of action.

But that was the only sour note for Barcelona, who registered their 14th win in 15 league games, and restored their six-point lead over Atletico Madrid at the top of the table.

An unbelievable five-goal tally from Falcao contributed to Atletico Madrid’s 6-0 demolition of cellar-dwellers Deportivo La Coruna.

It was Diego Costa who got the ball rolling for the hosts with a goal after 23 minutes but from then on, it was the Falcao show.

The Colombian striker rounded the half off for Atletico with a superb finish through on goal and a stunning volley from the edge of the box into the far corner.

He secured his hat-trick with a penalty just after the hour mark.

Falcao then scored an instinctive striker's goal three minutes later by finishing from a yard out.

His wonderful evening was complete 20 minutes from time when he took advantage of some poor defending for his 16th goal of the La Liga campaign.

Elsewhere on Sunday, Real Mallorca's run of games without a win stretched to 12 on Sunday morning as they were comfortably defeated 4-0 by Levante, while Athletic Bilbao recorded their first win in four games with a narrow 1-0 win over Celta Vigo.

La Liga: Rayo Vallecano 0 Real Zaragoza 2

11 December 2012

298600header.jpg

Real Zaragoza moved seven points clear of the relegation zone with a 2-0 win at Rayo Vallecano in La Liga on Monday.

Franco Zuculini opened the scoring for Zaragoza in the 21st minute after Jose Maria Movilla pounced on a loose ball in the box and found the Argentine midfielder, who calmly registered his first goal of the season.

Zaragoza dominated possession throughout the second half and were rewarded on 60 minutes when Antonio Galdeano buried a powerful shot from the edge of the area.

Rayo failed to test goalkeeper Jimenez Roberto until the late stages, with a shot from Triguero Tito tipped around the post in their closest effort.

Zaragoza climbed one spot above Rayo to 12th place on the table, with both teams on 19 points.

The undefeated Barcelona are on top with 43 points, followed by second-placed Atletico Madrid on 37 and Real Madrid on 32.

Sir Bobby Charlton: Mourinho's behaviour isn't suitable for a Manchester United boss

The club legend and ambassador admits he is unimpressed with the prospect of 'The Special One' coming to manage the Red Devils, believing his personality wouldn't fit the club

Dec 8, 2012 1:00:00 PM

By Matt Davis

211532hp2.jpg

Sir Bobby Charlton has expressed his view on the possibility of Jose Mourinho, the current Real Madrid manager, becoming the next boss at Manchester United.

Even though Sir Alex Ferguson has not confirmed when he will step down as United manager, reports continue to build which suggests the hunt for the Scot's successor is underway.

But club legend Sir Bobby has admitted that he wouldn't like to see the former Chelsea boss manage the side, despite his positive coaching quality, because of aspects of the Portuguese's behaviour.

"A United manager wouldn't do that," Charlton wrote in The Guardian, referring to the notorious incident when Mourinho poked Barcelona coach Tito Vilanova in the eye during a heated Clasico clash.

"Mourinho is a really good coach but that's as far as I would go really. He's the manager of Real Madrid and we expect to play them in the Champions League by the end of the season."

Referring to Mourinho's outspokenness and penchant for attracting controversy, Sir Bobby added: "He pontificates too much for my liking. He's a good manager, though."

That view is certainly backed by his record. Since 2002, Mourinho has not gone 12 months without winning a trophy, claiming seven League titles, ten domestic cups and three European trophies in 10 years in charge of high-pressure clubs such as Porto, Chelsea, Inter and Real Madrid.

La Liga preview: Messi, Falcao face off in showpiece

13 December 2012

298848header.jpg

Barcelona can kick nine points clear at the top of the table when they face Atletico Madrid in Sunday's La Liga action.

The clash at the Nou Camp pits Tito Vilanova's table-toppers - who are yet to taste defeat in the league this season - against an Atletico side that are also flying high.

Matches between the sides placed first and second on the La Liga table, particularly 15 matches into the season, are usually reserved between Barcelona and Real Madrid.

But Real's cross-town rivals have been in stunning form so far, winning 12 times largely thanks to the form of Colombian forward Radamel Falcao.

Falcao, who is a transfer target of UEFA Champions League winners Chelsea, has bagged 16 goals in his 14 La Liga fixtures this season.

The former Porto striker will enter the game fresh off a stunning five-goal haul in Atletico's 6-0 home win over strugglers Deportivo La Coruna on Monday and the likes of Carles Puyol and Gerard Pique will need to be on their game to stop the 26-year-old.

Of course, Barcelona have an in-form striker of their own - with pint-sized Argentine Lionel Messi simply unstoppable this season.

Messi - who now has 88 goals in the calendar year for club and country, breaking the record set by German Gerd Muller - has scored 12 times in his past seven matches.

He also has 23 goals in 15 league fixtures this season.

While the battle of the two forwards will be vital, the match is likely to be won in the midfield.

With Xavi, Andres Iniesta and Cesc Fabregas all at Vilanova's disposal, the likes of Arda Turan, Raul Garcia and Cristan Rodriguez must play well for Atletico if they want to come away from the match with anything other than a defeat.

Atletico are five points above third-placed Real, who entertain Espanyol at the Santiago Bernabeu on Sunday.

Real will enter the game desperate to bounce back from a 2-1 loss to Celta de Vigo in the Copa Del Rey on Wednesday.

But they should have far too much quality for an Espanyol side who have not won in their past six matches and sit 19th on the table.

By Cristiano Ronaldo's standards, four goals in an 11-game period is a drought of sorts and Real Madrid boss Jose Mourinho needs the Portuguese star to hit form if they are to challenge Barcelona this season.

Other matches this weekend see Malaga, who sit fourth, on the road to face Sevilla while Real Betis, who are flying high in fifth, are at Celta de Vigo on Monday.

Bottom-placed Deportivo La Coruna are also in action on Monday and they could go as high as 16th if they manage to defeat Real Vallodolid at home.

Getafe will look to extend their unbeaten record in the league to five when they welcome the visit of Osasuna on Saturday, while Real Mallorca play Athletic Bilbao and Granada take on Real Sociedad on the same day.

Levante have started the season well and are away at Real Zaragoza on Sunday while the weekend's other match sees an out-of-sorts Valencia host Rayo Vallecano.

La Liga wrap: Malaga march on

16 December 2012

299037header.jpg

Malaga's stellar season continued with a 2-0 success at Sevilla in La Liga on Saturday.

Manuel Pellegrini's side sit fourth after the win, with heavyweights Barcelona, Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid ahead of them.

Entering the match on the back of a 4-0 home win against Granada, Malaga played well in the first half and built on it in the second.

Argentine defender Martin Demichelis opened the scoring after 49 minutes before Sevilla defender Federico Fazio was given a straight red card.

Fazio also conceded a penalty in the process, which was duly converted by Portuguese midfielder Eliseu, as Malaga celebrated an important away win.

Getafe moved to seventh after a 1-1 home draw with Osasuna, with the fans at Coliseum Alfonso Perez seeing plenty of late drama.

Osasuna thought they had claimed victory when Sola netted on 85 minutes, just a few moments after they had Argentine midfielder Emiliano Armenteros sent off.

But Punal's late foul handed Getafe a chance to equalise from the penalty spot, an opportunity that substitute Diego Castro took advantage of in the second minute of injury time.

Other results saw Athletic Bilbao win 1-0 at Mallorca thanks to Aduriz's early strike while Granada and Real Sociedad played out a goalless draw.

La Liga wrap: Barcelona boost title bid

17 December 2012

24464header.jpg

Barcelona have triumphed 4-1 over Atletico Madrid in La Liga's top-of-the-table clash despite going behind to a brilliant Falcao goal.

Atletico Madrid entered Sunday's game six points behind Barcelona but by the end of the 90 minutes the Catalan club had extended their lead to three wins, after pulling the visitors apart in the second half.

After the break, Lionel Messi scored his eighth brace in as many starts for Barcelona, while Adriano arguably contributed the goal of the match, when he smashed home the equaliser in the 36th minute.

The visitors from Madrid almost took the lead in the ninth minute when Falcao flicked a right-wing cross onto the far post but the ball bounced out and was cleared by Barcelona's defence.

But Atletico Madrid's Colombian striker put the visitors in front in the 31st minute when Lionel Messi lost the ball in midfield to Diego Costa before the Brazilian passed to Falcao on the half-way line, who burst away from Sergio Busquets and expertly chipped Victor Valdes at full speed.

Just five minutes later Barcelona were level thanks to a stunning equaliser from Adriano.

The Brazilian full-back cut inside onto his left foot and curled a thumping shot into the far top corner off the underside of the crossbar.

Barcelona were ahead at half-time after Busquets showed composure in the penalty area to step around his opponent and shoot into the roof of the net in the 45th minute, following a goal-mouth scramble.

Messi extended the home side's lead in quintessential fashion in the 57th minute when he rolled off his marker onto his left foot and struck the ball into the bottom corner from the edge of the penalty area.

And the Argentine phenomenon grabbed his second goal when he nicked the ball off Atletico defender Diego Godin and dinked it over goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois in the 88th minute.

The win has taken Barcelona to 46 points after their eighth-straight victory in La Liga and extended their lead over arch-rivals Real Madrid to 13 points.

Real could only manage a 2-2 draw at home against Barcelona's second club Espanyol.

Having gone behind to Sergio Garcia's 31st minute opener, Real recovered thanks to goals either side of half-time from Cristiano Ronaldo and Fabio Coentrao.

But Espanyol took a share of the points when Juan Albin scored in the 88th minute.

A corner from the left was not dealt with by Real's defence and Hector Moreno headed the ball to Albin, who got the decisive touch past Iker Casillas.

In other La Liga results, Rayo Vallecano and Levante grabbed 1-0 wins away to Valencia and Real Zaragoza respectively.

La Liga wrap: Betis edge Celta, Deportivo held

18 December 2012

299158header.jpg

Jorge Molina found the net with nine minutes to go as Real Betis claimed a valuable 1-0 win at Celta Vigo in La Liga on Monday.

The match appeared to be heading for a stalemate until Molina broke the deadlock with a brilliant turn and finish from the edge of the area in the 81st minute.

Celta fought gallantly in search of a late equaliser but were unable to level proceedings as Betis moved up to fifth on the table with their ninth win of the season.

Betis play host to lowly Mallorca next up, while 15th-placed Celta travel to take on second-placed Atletico Madrid.

Meanwhile, bottom-placed Deportivo La Coruna played out a 0-0 draw at home to Real Valladolid.

Depor would have climbed out of the relegation zone with a first victory in six games but instead had to settle for a share of the spoils.

Depor have a good opportunity to return to winning ways against 19th-placed Espanyol in Barcelona next up, while Valladolid entertain runaway leaders Barcelona.

Tito Vilanova could step down following 'tumor relapse'

Barcelona have been rocked by news that the 44 year-old coach may have to undergo cancer treatment

Dec 19, 2012 11:49:00 AM

221652hp2.jpg

Barcelona have been rocked by the news that head coach Tito Vilanova could be forced to step down from his role after it emerged that he has suffered a relapse of a tumor he had last year.

The 44 year-old, who took over from Pep Guardiola earlier this year, endured emergency surgery in November 2011 on his parotid gland, and wide-scale reports from Spain say Vilanova's tumor has become malignant again.

Vilanova guided the Blaugrana to the best-ever start in La Liga as they have gone unbeaten for 16 games, and sit atop of the table with 46 points, holding a 13-point lead over arch-rivals Real Madrid.

The news about Vilanova's health problems comes only one day after defender Eric Abidal got the green light to make his comeback after spending the majority of 2012 on the sidelines due to a liver transplant.

Barcelona have yet to comment on the matter, but cancelled a Christmas lunch with the media, and are expected to release an official statement later on Wednesday.

Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson lavishes praise on possible successors Mourinho and Guardiola

Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson has lavished praise on the two leading candidates to succeed him at Old Trafford, Pep Guardiola and Jose Mourinho.

The 70-year-old, who has identified Mourinho and Guardiola as the only two able to replace him, highlighted the qualities of the Real Madrid supremo, who he repeatedly faced and was occasionally thwarted by when the Portuguese was in charge of Porto and Chelsea.

"Jose is very intelligent, he has charisma, his players play for him, and he is a good looking guy,” said Ferguson as he talked to academics at Harvard Business School in Boston.

"I think I have most of those things, too, apart from his good looks.

"He's got a confidence about himself, saying 'We'll win this' and 'I'm the Special One'.

"I could never come out and say we're going to win this game. It's maybe a wee bit of my Scottishness?”

The Scot went on to discuss Guardiola, the former Barcelona boss who oversaw the side that defeated the Red Devils in both the 2009 and 2011 Champions League final.

"Guardiola is an impressive guy,” he continued.

“He's brought about change in Barcelona, urging the team to always work hard to get the ball back within seconds after losing it.

"They are gifted but work hard. It was a fantastic achievement. He elevated the status of his players."

Guardiola is currently taking time out from the game after a highly successful period as Blaugrana boss and has been linked with a return to football at numerous Premier League clubs - including Chelsea, Manchester City, United and Arsenal.

La Liga preview: Barca out to continue dominance

21 December 2012

299409header.jpg

Barcelona will head into the Christmas period with what looks increasingly like an unbeatable gap to the chasing pack.

Barcelona have won their past nine La Liga games, the latest a comprehensive 4-1 trouncing of a very good Atletico Madrid side on Sunday, a result that could well prove the death knell for Real Madrid, after they dropped another two points late on against Espanyol.

The next victim in waiting for Barcelona is Real Vallodolid on Saturday, while Real face a tricky trip to fourth-placed Malaga.

Lionel Messi continues to add to the all-time record goals haul after another brace on Sunday to bring up his 90th goal of 2012.

Barca lead Jose Mourinho's Real side by a whopping 13 points with 22 games to play.

It's not insurmountable, but for a side that has won 15 of 16 games there would have to be a monumental collapse.

Christiano Ronaldo scored and set up Fabio Coentrao's go-ahead goal but he continues to carry much of the burden, one Mourinho is finding increasingly difficult to deal with given the inpatient nature of the club's supporters.

Atletico can get back on track at home to Celta de Vigo after an excellent first-half performance against Barcelona still ended in a 4-1 defeat for the league's second best side.

Rayo Vallecano welcome fifth-placed Levante on Thursday with one side looking to break into the top six and other looking to stay there.

Sevilla eye a first league win in five games away to Real Sociedad and Espanyol head back home to host Deportivo La Coruna in the other games on Thursday.

Struggling Valencia will look to haul themselves out of mid-table when Getafe visit on Friday and on Saturday, Real Betis take on Mallorca and Osasuna entertain Granada, who are without a win in their past five league games.

Athletic Bilbao play Real Zaragoza in the other clash on Saturday.

Ronaldo threatens legal action following 'false news' reports

The Portuguese ace has taken to Facebook to send out a warning to anyone who publishes false information about his career or personal life

Real Madrid star Cristiano Ronaldo has issued a threat to sue anyone who publishes false information about his career and personal life.

The Portuguese has been subject to media scrutiny throughout his career, but has now warned that he will no longer tolerate fictitious stories.

"Again there is news published about me that is false. I do not want such nonsense to be published but if it does continue, I am going to have a talk with my lawyers," he wrote on his Facebook page on Thursday.

Despite los Blancos' difficult start to the current Liga season, Ronaldo has scored 23 goals in all competitions this term.

Selling Cazorla to Arsenal at that price was a 'blunder', says Pellegrini

The Malaga manager has revealed his club were forced into allowing the Spain international to leave as his side were in "acute crisis" but feels it was a mistake

Dec 20, 2012 9:17:00 AM

By Tom Marshall-Bailey

239983hp2.jpg

Malaga manager Manuel Pellegrini believes Arsenal snapped up the bargain of the summer in Santi Cazorla after admitting the Spanish club were forced into selling the player because of financial problems.

Cazorla joined the Gunners in August for a fee believed to be around the €18 million mark and the Spain international has impressed immediately netting seven goals already including a hat-trick at Reading.

Cazorla admitted recently that he would love to face his former club in the final of this year's Champions League, and Pellegrini has revealed that allowing the forward to leave the club was a mistake.

The Malaga boss told 'Al Primer Toque', a radio show on Spanish station Onda Cero: "There are many clubs who have to give up their big names except Barca or Madrid, so there is a big difference between them [their quality] and the rest.

"Economically, the club had to make a change based on what had been proposed [there was a lot of financial trouble - owner threatened to pull out over TV money] and we had to sell Santi Cazorla.

"Santi's case was inexplicable. It was a time of acute crisis in the club. The departure of Cazorla at the time and at the amount that was agreed was a blunder."

The latest superstar in the Malaga ranks is Isco, who some believe has been empowered by Cazorla's departure, as he has been able to play a more prominent role, a suggestion Pellegrini denies.

He added: "A good player has never benefited from another good player leaving and no player has gone backwards by playing alongside another great player."
