SINGAPORE: Minister for the Environment and Water Resources Dr Vivian Balakrishnan said it is "arrogant and wrong" of town council chairman Ms Sylvia Lim to make a political attack on National Environment Agency (NEA) officers for simply doing their job.
In a media statement released Sunday evening, Dr Balakrishnan said this is a "completely unnecessary distraction caused by the Aljunied-Hougang-Punggol East Town Council (AHPETC) and its managing agent FMSS."
All town councils, he said, have always done routine spring-cleaning of hawker centres and there is no excuse for the town council (AHPETC) to delay the current cleaning programme as the safety of the public must remain the paramount concern.
Dr Balakrishnan said hawkers are honest, hardworking people just trying to make a living and there is no reason to charge hawkers more for cleaning the ceiling.
He said there is no reason to disrupt their business.

The hawkers, he noted, have been consistent and truthful throughout this entire episode, and “it's obvious they are speaking the truth”.

NEA civil servants, he added, are duty-bound to protect public hygiene and ensure hawkers are treated fairly.

He asked the town council to cooperate with NEA, and consult closely with the hawkers and fulfill its obligations.

SINGAPORE: Responding to National Environment Agency (NEA), Workers' Party Chairman Sylvia Lim said the agency's assertions "fly in the face of logic" and that it is "contradicting itself".

She released an email exchange on Sunday, where a NEA officer had told the town council on 7 February that the "hawkers’ association will make the necessary arrangements with the contractor for scaffolding" to be put up and dismantled.

Ms Lim also took issue with NEA's interpretation of Mr Muhamad Faisal Abdul Manap's letter.

She said what it showed was that Mr Faisal was aware that it was not town council policy to not clean the high areas of the market nor collect additional charges from the hawkers.

On the cleaning quotation, Ms Lim said the contractor was an independent company that was free to provide quotations to any party, and it was the hawkers’ association that had requested it.

She reiterated that NEA's attribution of the quotation to the town council was misleading and politically motivated.

Ms Lim also said she welcomes NEA's release of the documents for the public to make their own judgment and that "regrettably", NEA still did not clarify whether the hawkers were asked by the Aljunied-Hougang-Punggol East Town Council to pay any extra charges.

In a petition to the media, the affected hawkers had said the town council and contractor told them they would not do any cleaning for high areas, but the letter did not specify that the town council had asked the hawkers to pay for it.

Ms Vivian, the $68-million man that wasted a few billions of our tax dollars in the screwed up Youth Olympics, can only tell lies in generalities. Face the facts ...WP has produced the detail facts and what does he or the NEA produce, talking points. He nor NEA, who is the front man there on this file, don't address the facts raised.

Ms Vivian, please lah, if you don't have it ...kowtow and walk away. You come out humtum air only. You look like a bigger fool doing it.

I hope the WP bring this up in Parliament so that the matter will be in documented in the Hansard and in the future, our kids can learn about Vivian's stupidity. That's the best way to impart shame on the PAP.

An idealistic patriot who was strongly critical of PAP and its practice of government.

Then he was told that if you want to change the way things are done in government, you gotta start from inside. So he joined the PAP. But the moment he did that, his fortunes were tied inextricably to that of the party.

Now look at what he has become..

Instead of changing the party, the party has changed him.

My dear Vivian, was this what you saw yourself becoming in the future when you were that idealistic president? Transforming from PAP's strongest critic to its apologist and defender of its partisan politics?

Did you see today's ST on page A6? There's a two-third page news on this saga, all about placing blame on WP. So there you have it, hawkers association, NEA, V Bala and the ST. That's four PAPpy parties working in tandem to slime WP's town council management.

Now convince me there's no concerted effort and sinister intent.

What is a bigger unnecessary distraction is for a million dollar minister to be involved in this. It shows that either the NEA officers are inept, unable to handle the situation such that a minister has to step in, or that V Bala is too free in spite of his million dollar pay.
