Goh Meng Seng: WP may split

Despite the facade of unity put up by WP leaders in the sacking of Hougang MP Yaw Shin Leong from the party, cracks are appearing within the leadership which may lead to a split in the party, said former WP member Goh Meng Seng.

Mr Yaw was expelled from WP on Wednesday following his repeated refusal to address swirling rumors about his alleged infidelity. His current whereabouts is unknown as he continues to remain uncontactable.

Speaking to queries from the media, Mr Goh pointed out that the decision to sack Mr Yaw was not unanimous among the WP Exco members and quite a number felt he was harshly dealt with.

“Shin Leong still has till 24 February to appeal against his expulsion from WP and if he does, the party will be split,” Mr Goh added.

WP will also be holding its Annual General Meeting in July this year which may see cracks appearing in the party over the way it handled the fiasco by expelling Mr Yaw without giving him an opportunity to explain himself.

Mr Goh went on to say:

“Many young WP members continue to hold Mr Yaw in high regard, especially his ‘comrades’ who contested together with him in Ang Mo Kio GRC as part of the ‘suicide squad’.”

While WP is in no danger of splitting now, the festering discontent within its ranks may led to a mass exodus from the party later on.

Mr Goh contested in the 2006 General Election under the banner of WP. He resigned abruptly a few months later after being embroiled in an online spat with a netizen which dragged the party into disrepute.

I'm beginning to think some of his haters may be right. Some of his screws seem to be loose

We should let WP comment and make statements about their party affairs. Outsiders should not make uncalled for comments unnecessarily even when asked, especially in front of the media.

Long long time ago, a renowned PS was telling everybody at a meeting, "If you want something to happen, go forth and tell everybody. Keep repeating it with conviction - like as if it is true. Soon your self-initiated rumour will take root and it will happen."

It's true that the decision wasn't unanimous. But so what? Did USA split into two countries because of 51:49 voting patterns? Did Republican Party or Democratic Party split into two parties because of 51:49 preliminaries? Did Singapore split into east-west dynasties of 60:40 voting patterns? Shin Leong will not appeal, otherwise he wouldn't have run. But whether he appeal or not, so what? He'll lose. Can he drag the women involved to court to testify on his behalf?

You're plain silly and bordering on shit stirring to bring this possibility up to project an image and monger the rumor of party splitting. In a pluralistic democracy structure, whether at the level of party or country, the majority wins and the minority concedes. You expect unanimous decision, otherwise everything falls apart?

That's your personal character failure in a pluralistic demorcacy which even PAP can understand and accept by now. If not everyone agrees with you, then you're gone. Not everyone thinks like you, my friend. They have the chance to express and vote for their opinions in specific issues, but they understand and accept majority wins and move on, staying together for the broader common cause that's unaminously agreed upon, and that's how party and country come into being.

Bro, ignore him. Its a stupid argument. The fact that it was not unanimous decision spells well for the party and give a strong indication that it is not run by a dictator and the institution of democracy at least exist within the party. Good to have dissenting voices who can provide balance and play the devil's advocate.

Despite being asked, YSL did not have the courtesty to turn up and explain himself. Sylvia made it very clear at the press conference that they had no opportunity to clear the air because of his failure to turn up. Sounds like a man who ran away.

GMS is out of his mind. Why would a party with unprecedented number in parliament split over one chap and his runway hormones. Does not make sense.

From this bugger's antics, he seems to want to milk maximum publicity and whatever political mileage for himself.
Unfortunately for him, so far it has backfired.
