RP - the party to watch for GE 2010

So far, a lot of discussion in this forum has been about the NSP. This is mainly because Goh Meng Seng is a regular poster. For this election, I think that RP is the party to watch. From the following article below, we can see the GRCs they have chosen to contest. These were definitely not "picked out of a hat" but chosen after a careful study of the demographics.

http://www.temasekreview.com/2010/0...y-visit-to-west-coast-residents-this-evening/

The Reform Party will be conducting a walkabout today’s evening 7pm at Blk 701 West Coast Road, this coming straight after another walkabout last night at Jurong.

With the next election looming ahead, the Reform Party is stepping up on its efforts to reach out to as many Singaporeans as possible within the shortest period of time.

Being the “new kid on the block” founded only two years ago by the respected late opposition leader J.B. Jeyaretnam, not many Singaporeans are aware or familiar with the Reform Party yet which makes it imperative that it works much harder than the rest in its grassroots activities.

Though it may be a fledging party, RP has attracted a few credible candidates into its ranks so far including former government scholars Mr Tony Tan Lay Thiam and Ms Hazel Poa.

Its Secretary-General Kenneth Jeyaretnam who graduated with a honors degree in economics from Cambridge University has written frequently on the Singapore economy (instead of petty squabbles with the PAP), his latest article on the merits of having a minimum wage system in Singapore to help the lower-income group.

The Reform Party will be contesting in Hong Kah, West Coast and Bishan-Toa Payoh GRCs in the next general election as well as Choa Chu Kang and another SMC, assuming their electoral boundaries remain intact.

The next general election may be the last window of opportunity for native Singaporeans to reclaim ownership of their country. At the rate the PAP regime is mass-importing foreigners into Singapore, it is only a matter of time before they become minorities in their own land of birth.

Please lend your support to an alternative party which has laid down its ambition to challenge the PAP, dares to criticize the PAP on its policies and has the potential to evolve to become a credible and strong party in the future.

I have the lowest opinion of the RP Sec-gen. Needless to say in terms of manners and ideas GMS of NSP carries himself better but I think even CSJ of SDP. Nevertheless I'm voting in any opposition parties and encourage all to do the same.

Whether RP is the party to watch is immaterial because all active opposition should be watched. The message sounds like we should only watch RP and no others. So does it mean vote RP when RP comes, but vote PAP or spoil vote when others come? Every other party has also recruited talents - NSP has good Malay talents and even an SAF Colonel has joined WP. Every other party has also done house visits - it is basic, easy to organise and doesn't take an old party to be able to do one.

Of course not. We should encourage ALL opposition parties. However looking at the election plans so far, I would say that RP has the highest chance of making a surprise breakthrough and taking a GRC. This is not because KJ is a nice guy but because they have done their homework and chosen very good GRCs to contest in.

Thats a surprise of the centuries

Based on the YPAP poll results, Goh Meng Seng don't have much chance of winning in Tampines. The PAP however seem to be lining up all the big guns for a big defence of Tampines. This include PM Lee making "secret" unreported visits to Tampines to shore up support for Minister Mah.

So while the PAP is distracted in the east, RP sneaks in from the west.:biggrin::biggrin:

Good hardworking opposition, people should support them if they share their ideals.

Some people may think he's conservative, but I think he is going on the right path to get more votes for his party. And I do agree KJ is definitely one of the dark horses.

Hong Kah could be a very interesting battleground if they don't re-draw the boundaries and if they move Gan there to replace YCT and head up the existing team of incumbents.

CCK could be an interesting SMC depending on who replaces Gan. It probably won't be a full ministar, who rarely take on SMCs. In my opinion, West Coast and Bishan-Toa Payoh are strong pap areas. The former because there are a lot of well off comfortable people in that area and the latter because there are a lot of comfortable uncle aunty retiree types in that area who have been reminded over the years that "WKS is a very effective ministar".

It's ok if someone is not a nice guy but KJ is a horrible leader. However I have no qualms about voting for him and nothing against the opinion that RP will be the only party to get a GRC. It can happen. I hope for his own sake that his spatty Facebook ways (ie quarrelling over who doesn't want to friend him on FB) won't get transplanted into the 9 days and rally stage. Else they not only become a one term party like SDP in 1997, the "Jeyaretnams" name will stink forever.

I can only say Bishan-Toa Payoh not easy to breakdown.

Another thing is for the next election, I think there would be a 3 corner fight. Don't ask me why, I just have this niggling feeling. :o

For someone who purports to wanting the APs to contest in Tampines, we can readily see your unhappiness with the PAP and perhaps even MBT. But all you have ever done is to hit out at NSP. Right now, GMS is the best person in the AP camp to hit MBT.

MBT is shivering in his blanket each night wondering what to write in his resume for his next job.

You hit it on the head. Hong Kah and CCK will be the 2 hot spots. The others are just a distraction. If the PAP is spread so thin that all they can muster is Minister Gan in that GRC, than I think RP's chances would be very high. This is espcially if the PAP is distracted by Goh Meng Seng in the East.

For CCK, no news yet on who will be the PAP canidate there yet.

The good part about the RP strategy is that KJ can move easily between Hong Kah and CCK. Hence if they play a king card in Hong Kah, he can fight in CCK and use CCK as way into parliament. On the other hand if Hong Kah is left open with a weak PAP Minister, then he can choose to gamble to take the GRC.

A 3 corner fight in Bishan-Toa Payoh? Or anywhere else?
There won't be in Bishan. Now both Chiam's SDA and KJ's RP want it, but if they don't form an alliance, one party will back off.
These 2 guys are pragmatic politicians.

Anywhere else. Not 3 corner in Bishan-Toa Payoh. Just have this feeling that's all.

I'm not voting for PAP, so why do I care?

But would it raise your eyebrows that on your FB you post a harmless remark like NCMP can help or hinder the opposition, then a response comes stating that you were trying to befuddle and hoodwink the people.
