This is not a knee jerk reaction. What kind of management allows 2 trainees within 3 months of joining a company be placed in such position that they have lost their lives. There is no act of God here, no wind, no storm etc that could have contributed to this tragedy. Again I suspect that it is poor procedures.

Desmond has been with the SMRT since 1 Oct 2012 and his last drawn salary was $2.25. When he came in he was allowed to bring in his own team and except for two, the rest were from the SAF with no prior experience in the industry. If he had brought in at least half of them who are in this industry it would have been acceptable. Does he need 10 years to fix the SMRT.

There has to be independent inquiry and not another bullshit eyewash exercise where lower ranking stuff are disciplined and we are then told that they have accepted their punishment. And why is he paid much higher than other GLC chiefs with firms that are valued much higher.

Unfortunately it will likely turn out to be a ' lets move on ' issue, or at the very best some mid level management type will be made the scapegoat.

The disordered SMRT under over-rated CEO Desmond Kuek
To say that the name Desmond Kuek is synonymous with frequent rail disruptions is not an exaggeration. The employment of this ex-SAF Lieutenant-general as CEO in 2011 was not without misgiving among Singaporeans as it was considered ridiculous that an ex-SAF Lt-general without the necessary business and technical experience could run the SMRT efficiently. An ex-SAF general's experience was in running the SAF and used to issuing orders to soldiers with absolute obedience. Running the SMRT is altogether different and requires business and technical acumen that a CEO must be endowed with.

To show what a joker CEO Desmond Kuek is, he could display a blatant irresponsibility two months after assuming duty as CEO by vacationing in the United States in complete disregard to an illegal strike by 171 PRC drivers of SMRT. He returned only after everything had been brought under control.

Another instance of his inadequacy was in bringing in four SAF buddies into the SMRT management in December 2012 "to steer the beleaguered transport operator back on track". He acknowledged that SMRT was beleaguered but bringing in four SAF buddies to steer it back on track is mind-boggling. Like Desmond Kuek who lacks the necessary expertise to run SMRT, the bringing in of four SAF personnel, without the requisite experience, to steer it back on track could only mean to take the commuting public for a ride. It could only enhance the suspicion that the joker Desmond Kuek was out to make the SMRT a defence entity like PM Lee Hsien Loong's Cabinet.

That Desmond Kuek and his SAF buddies have not been able to make any improvement to the frequent rail disruptions since taking office is all too clear to the commuting public. They are not too blind to see the desperate effort of the CEO in trying to put up an artificial defence each time the SMRT runs into mishap. It happens so frequent that it ceases to have any meaning to the commuting public.

There have been at least five rail disruptions since 23 February with the latest two occurring on Tuesday 3 March.A sixth disruption has just occurred tonight at the Bukit Panjang LRT and it's so severe that services could only be restored the next day. Desmond Kuek acknowledged that commuter confidence in the reliability of SMRT's train services has been shaken. Whatever plans Desmond Kuek promised to make to remedy the defects will not be able to convince the public because past promises have been found to be meaningless. Desmond Kuek and his SAF buddies just lack the expertise to run the SMRT efficiently. They are only fit to run the SAF with their absolute command.

So is there any remedy? Desmond Kuek is obviously found to be severely wanting and the most logical choice is a replacement with the requisite expertise to run the SMRT efficiently. So if for political expediency, it is found necessary for Desmond Kuek to continue as CEO, rail disruptions will be a perennial problem as Kuek will never have the expertise to overcome it.The ideal solution will however be the nationalisation of the transport system.

Fully agree... Heads must roll starting with the fat cats at the very top of the SMRT hierachy.... 2 young men at the prime of their lives are now dead... At this moment of time 2 families are in deep grief but Desmond will still be getting his fat salary at the end of the month.. There should be no Ifs and no Buts.... In the name of conscience Desmond and his Kaki Langs must go.

How can two trainees be put in a position where they can be hit by an incoming train?

Obviously someone screwed up horribly. Basic safety protocols....were they in place?

Oct 2014, still nothing learnt. Again procedures not followed or not in place. Go any subway or metro and you will see staff block the gantry once they see crowding at platform level on their CCTV. And their PR still can give rojak answers despite the video.

SMRT defend action by ground staff for overcrowding of MRT platform 25
BY ONLINECITIZEN ON OCTOBER 25, 2014 CURRENT AFFAIRS
Train operator SMRT defended its staff’s actions on Tuesday when as video of overcrowding of platform at the Lakeside MRT station platform on the East West Line went viral. The platform was overcrowded due to train delays which was not announced nor reported by mainstream news.

Joel Rasis had taken a video of people pouring onto the packed platform and bumping into others as they came up on the escalator. He said announcements had been made about train delays on the line towards Joo Koon and claimed SMRT ground staff did not tell people to stop using the escalator.

Patrick Nathan
SMRT vice president of corporate information and communications Patrick Nathan’s address to local media queries said staff at Lakeside were deployed to stop commuters from using the escalator, and they also helped to disperse and manage people at the platform.

“While the video shows that there was bunching up of commuters at the top of the escalator, it also shows station staff stopping more commuters from getting onto the escalator, and the escalator was stopped shortly after,” he said.

He added that four of the six fare gates leading into the station were closed to reduce the flow of commuters into the station.

“Our station staff are trained to manage crowding at platforms and have commuters’ safety as their top priority,” he said.

Mr Patrick did not seem to have addressed the issue of overcrowding at the platform. SMRT launched a programme this year to have traffic lights at MRT stations to indicate that station have been disrupted or delayed with the use of “Green”, “Red” and “Amber light”.

Online reactions towards SMRT’s defense have been largely negative.

Some noted that SMRT’s statement did not address the root cause of the overcrowding,

Yes, staff stopping commuters at the bottom of escalator makes us forget about why the bunching happened in the first place.

A commenter on Straits Times, said that she finds SMRT’s defense being lame.

“If your staff had done what you claimed, then how did this video came about? The fact that this happened (and captured on video), only showed that while your staff “may be deployed” in the manner described by you, but they had obviously failed and as such, it resulted in what the video captured. By insisting that the situation was “well managed”, it is simply in denial and it is very disgusting. An apology for a 20/20 hindsight would had been a better press release…”

Another said that she was there at the platform and commented,

“I was there. Yes the staffs are there But, only at the bottom of the escalator. They ALLOW us to take the escalator. Pls lei, ppl are nt blind la. I agreed with Eric Wubai. And no there were No announcement made saying train service to pasir ris is delayed. Only to Joo koon. -.-“”

Traction power should be up and running while the train is moving.... No one should be allowed access on to the tracks... Where were the mentors for these 2 trainees? Who allowed them access on to the tracks? These 2 chaps should not even be walking on the walkways while power to the 3rd rail is still active..

You're right. It boggles the mind.

Just heard that NTUC plps were at the scene led by MP and NTUC Director Melvin Yong. They must have realised the severity of this tragedy.

Why is any one so surprised? This is the same Desmond Quack who came from an Organization where the Trainers killed a trainee by throwing 6 smoke grenades instead of 2, right? Now another 2 trainees die in this SAF run organization and people act shocked? When the PAP keeps installing SAF officers in to run orgs. then don't be surprised to also get SAF results.

In a statement, SMRT Trains' managing director Lee Ling Wee apologised to those affected by the accident and said the company's first priority was to the victims' families.

In response to queries, a SCDF spokesman said it was alerted to the incident at 11.11am and dispatched a fire engine, two fire bikes, a red rhino, two ambulances and three support vehicles.

Both men were pronounced dead at the scene by paramedics, the spokesman added.

Labour chief Chan Chun Sing, in a Facebook post on Tuesday afternoon, said he was "extremely saddened" by the tragic accident.

Mr Chan added that the National Transport Workers’ Union will do what is necessary to support the affected workers during this diffcult time.

"We must all do our part to keep each other safe at the workplace. Every accident is one accident too many," he wrote.

The Land Transport Authority (LTA) said in a statement that it was assisting with investigations and "will extend our assistance to their next-of-kin where necessary".

Tanjong Pagar GRC MP Melvin Yong wrote in a Facebook post: "On behalf of the National Transport Workers' Union, I would like to extend our deepest condolences to the families of the two workers who were killed in the fatal train accident this morning along the East-West Line."

Mr Yong, who is also executive secretary of the union, said he was at Pasir Ris station with union leaders to render support to the affected families and workers.

"When we first got news of the accident, the union mobilised our union leaders - the most important thing is to reach out to the families of the affected workers," Mr Yong told reporters outside the station.

"There are two groups, one is the families of the two deceased workers, the other is our workers who were at the scene themselves."

Access to the station was blocked for more than two hours before it was reopened at close to 2pm, with SMRT staff stationed at the entrances to inform commuters to take the bus instead.
