NSMan Lt-Col (NS) Lien (ST Photo)

The mainstream media highlighted an NSman who was awarded the ‘NSmen of the
Year award’ yesterday (22 Oct).

Lieutenant-Colonel (NS) Lien, 49, who is currently the Chief of Staff of the
4th Singapore Armoured Battalion, had a quadruple heart bypass two years
ago.

After the operation, he was not duly worried about his own recovery. Instead,
he was worried about an impending in-camp training (ICT) of his battalion.

Lt-Col (NS) Lien said, “I was a bit more concerned with how the ICT would
run.”

After his surgery, he secretly went back to camp without telling his wife, to
sit in on a commanders’ meeting. He wanted to ensure that training would go like
clockwork despite his absence.

His dedication to SAF earned him the ‘NSmen of the Year award’.

Yesterday, at the NS45 Commemoration Dinner to celebrate 45 years of national
service, Lt-Col (NS) Lien was one of the 15 recipients of the award.

He said he was hungry for more action when he completed his reservist cycle
in 2001 as the OC of an armour company. He then signed up for the Reservist on
Voluntary Extended Reserve Service scheme, which allows key appointment holders
to carry on serving.

He indicated that he would like to serve a couple of years more as a
reservist.

Lt-Col (NS) Lien runs his own company. He is the MD of Amos International, a
home-grown marine and offshore procurement and logistics firm.

He is lucky that nothing happened to him when he went back to camp while,
presumably, on medical leave. Had he died in the meeting room, he would have
caused a lot of trouble for his CO.

This proves that the stuff I read about Sinkies hating NS is all a load of bull. I too share his views. NS is an honor and a privilege.

well spoken BosSam...for someone who used to be thrown into the guardroom twice a month for being AWOL.

Because they don't deserve it. Citizenship has it's privileges and NS is one of them.

If foreigners want the same privilege, they have to earn it.

I won't be surprised Amos International is Gahmen owned or part Gahmen owned. 2005 - 2008 Distinguished Defence Partner Award from Ministry of Defence in recognition of outstanding contribution towards National Defence. He will have a nice retirement fund for sure.

How much is reservist, commander and responsiblitily allowance for Lt-Col?

S$100 NTUC shopping vouchers & free use of the clubhouse in 2013...a common Hokkien Phrase, " jiat ba, pak thor buay yeow" ( roughly translated, well fed, not hungry), this is the kind that gives a distorted picture. The common man, who have to balance family, work, children..have more pressing things to think about, with a heart operation like that, would be, worying if anything happened to him, how his family going to survive. You think, can be bothered with ICT?? it is survival.

That is why its "jiat ba, pak thor buay yeow" & 'cui kong karchng song"..:p or in other words, "hao lian"!!

A lot of these KAH(key appointment holders) love to go back for these briefings and planning leading up to a high key ICT.

Firstly, you go back and cho bo lan and can claim your normal salary.
Secondly, for those of us who have been through army before, even going back 2 hours enables you to claim for half a day.
Thirdly, KAHs have special allowances and I heard that the allowances had been increased since last year.

The above is especially true for those jobless KAHs or those doing badly outside. My brigade has a cho bo lan CSM(yeah fuck, CSM also considered KAH) whose role during every ICT is to bark at the soldiers and walk around doing nothing. He loves to go back for these briefings as he is jobless outside.

But for those big fishes who are company owners, they are not there for the allowances or money. As someone pointed out earlier, it is to get contacts for Mindef contracts.
