Hougang Spring - Demise of the PAP

The indomitable independent spirit of Hougang Teochews is indisputable.

In fact,I wrote a thread saluting them.

They voted only for LTK,doesn't matter if he is from any other party than PAP.

The very reason why PAP rushed the current DPM Teo Chee Hean,an elite Teochew to Punggol GRC .Immediately after Hougang fall.Since the bulk of Teochews in Hougang actually came from the rural Punggol.

Now,the question to ask is why is WP under LTK not fielding a team against PAP Teo?

Hopefully, LTK and the Workers Party ("WP") will be able to recruit enough individuals with talent, courage and ambition to challenge the GRC to be led by TCH.
I suppose the WP will have to work hard to recruit sufficient individuals to work the ground, in order to prepare to stand in several GRC's.

punggol grc are not mainly teochew, most were either first timer or upgrader from other estates. most had never live in punggol kampongs at all. the only thing they knew of punggol is the punggol seafood.

The next best bet for WP is Punggol GRC.LTK has natural advantage.Many living in Hougang have relatives in Pungool and they are largely Teochews.

So much so even PAP feared the repetition of Hougang in Punggol.The very reason why PAP dug out a prominent Teochew family which is Teo Chee Hean's to stand in Punggol.That was in 1991.Almost 20 years ago.

But WP under LTK is not touching Punggol.LTK rather pick fights with the likes of SDP or NSP for territory.....but never for Punggol.WHY?

This Hougang Spring signals a new awakening. The PAP can do all they want -GRC, dangling carrots, upgrading, threats, suits, etc... nothing will turn the tide against them.

People are now awakened. Wising up to their dirty tricks. Apologies without sincerity. Smiling thru their teeth. Recognise the divide and rule tactics they employed. A monster which would not change for the better!

I pray, wish and hope that the Workers Party will be able to recruit enough committed and passionate individuals to contest in several GRC's, and that this [Hougang Spring] will be infectious and spread like wild fire to other HDB estates, including those living in condos and landed properties, to elect more than a dozen or two dozen non-PAP MP's in 2016, so as to have sufficient fire power in Parliament.

I can only speculate.

My speculation is that PAP created a WP-bahru,of sorts ,to mop up protest votes.Meaning,despite the PAP gerrymandering and redrawing the electoral boundaries over and over again,the public agast against PAP is overwhelming.Hence,it falls on PAP to provide a pseudo opposition for these disgruntled lot--who will play ball with PAP.

Therefore,it is not for WP under LTK to pose a challenge to PAP as the alternative government but to maintain the status quo.

So far all the actions by WP,including how WP MPs behavior in the parliament,corroborates this.

That is why.

There no punggol in 91 but Sengkang. Tch is mp for pasir ris, the better off residents. Those day, that place consider atas. Even in 91, many of the flats in ave 8, 9 and st 51 & 52 were not even completed. So how can the punggol of 91 have many relative of hougang. Go check the flats completion date in Hdb website before coming out of these theory.
FYI, punggol forced relocation happen in late 70s till 85. Many of these ppl moved to amk, hougang ave 1, 5, 7 & st 21.

Bro,I think you got your facts wrong.Pls check again.Most flats in the vicinity you mentioned are at least 20yrs and above.I have just checked.

Anyway,the name of a GRC and it's boundaries drawn by PAP is meaningless.What matters is the physical history and the fact that Teo Chee Hean,popped out of PAP.As it suddenly realized the power of Teochew Niang as a political factor.Brought him,as a rookie,under the coat tail of GCT ,just for 1 term.Subsequently to be forever in Pasir Ris/Punggol/Sengkang area.
